[2008] ToolStrip Disappearing From View (in Designer AND Runtime)?
Mar 13, 2009
In my project, I was first using two ListViews with a few buttons on the side to control actions (add files, remove files, etc). Now, I thought it looked neater if I incorporated those buttons into a ToolStrip, and put the ListViews into a SplitContainer. So I did... One SplitContainer, on the left side a ListView (docked Full) + ToolStrip (docked Top), on the right side exactly the same.
All of a sudden, (it seems to be pretty random), the right ListView (never the left one) seems to jump 'on top of' the ToolStrip. It looks as if the Z-Order changes so that the docking screws up, but after looking at the Document Outline, it is all still fine. The ToolStrip just seems to disappear from view completely. I have no idea where it went. Then, when I select the ToolStrip in the Component bar (what is that called? where you can see the control icons only for controls such as Dialogs etc), it suddenly pops up again, in the right place! And the ListView scales down a bit so everything is correct once again...
As soon as I select another control, the Listview jumps back up and the Toolstrip disappears again...At first I thought well, not really a problem since I can just select the ToolStrip from the component bar... Nope... It seems that the ToolStrip is also hidden during
I thought it was just a one-off bug and deleted the whole SplitContainer to build it up again. Five minutes later, it happened again.I decided to throw away to complete project and go back to a slightly older version (with the Buttons instead of the ToolStrip) and try it again.Nope, same problem! I have tried to reproduce the bug in a clean project, but no luck...

I do have a form with a ToolStrip and some other controls on it. I use this form in other projects as kind of base form, which means that the other forms inherit from this form.
My problem: In the designer I can not change any properties (property window is read-only) of the Toostrip or add new buttons on it. All changes I have to do must be done in code instead of using the designer. ToolStrip-modifier property is set to Public.

I have been working on an app that was basically a vb6 app but had to be changed and I did it all using VB 2008. works well, great. One of the problems that I had was to work on different groupboxes or frames. Since they are layered on top of each other, working on one frame would mess up the others. Eventually it all went okay. but now if i want to add another item in the menu and hence add another groupbox (or frame) in the same app - it would definitely be a nightmare.

While I am asking this for VB I verified this issue also occurs in C# so I think it is a .NET issue. I am using Visual Studio 2010 Premium Version 10.0.40219.1 SP1Rel with .NET Version 4.0.30319 SP1Rel.
Step to recreate the problem.
Create a new Windows Application for Visual Basic (WinForms).
Add a ToolStrip.
Add a ToolStripComboBox to the ToolStrip.
Save, note the width of the combo box.
Change the padding on the combo pax to 2.
Save and close the form designer.
Reopen the form designer, look at combo box width - it decreased. Note that form is marked as having been modified. So save it and close the designer again. Reopen the designer and look at the combo box width - it will have shrunk every time you save, close, and reopen until you get to a 0 width. It shrinks by 4 * the padding size. Why would padding affect the size since that is the interior margin where as the margin settings are the exterior margins.

Is it possible to add items to a toolstrip menu at runtime? Or to a menu strip?

I know this may sound really stupid, however, I really do not know. Though I have been programming with VB2005 for about the last 4 years or so, I have never used toolstrip at all. Just simply never has a need to, until now. So, I tried it by simply clicking it in the toolbox, which is simple enough, and choose the toolstrip button for the toolstrip as well. I change the button image to the image I have and want, which seems to be piece of cake operation. Everything looks good in design time. However, when I ran the program, I have the toolstrip simply look blank (no show of the button or the image at all)! The button was there alright, as when I clicked it, it responded. However, it just simply not visible at all, nor the image. When I ran my mouse over it, it did change color (which I guess indicate it is there), but no image either.

I use MS visual studio 2010. I did open designer and view the form for the same file A before. But after some small changes, I can no longer view the form designer.vb, but can only view code in designer.vb. Even if I go back to the original source, I still can not open designer!!
The error is: The designer could not be shown for this file because none of the classes within it can be designed. The designer inspected the following clsses in the file A-The base class BaseClass could not be loaded. Ensure the assembly has been referenced and all that projects have been built.

If for any reason I close the designer view of a window and then save the project, i can never see the designer view again. other forms that I have not closed the design view can be seen. When I run the project, everything looks fine, I am just not allowed to change the visual.

if i click the designer tab i can only see a white form and the text say "Me.Database1DataSet.DataSetName = "Database1DataSet" and "The code within the method 'InitializeComponent' is generated by the designer and should not be manually modified. Please remove any changes and try opening the designer again"?

I am very interested to see the answer as I would like to know the significant differences (if any) of generally using one more than the other. In a few days, I will be starting my Java programming class to familiarize myself with the language.I do know that Java uses objects. My question/discussion is not necessarily related to .NET (although in a way, it is); my question is more about what is a better practice and why.Is it more proper to declare buttons and such through runtime rather than designer? Is it just more work typing everything? Or does build and run much faster?

I'm building a game using the traditional form view on VS2010 and I'm trying to change the colour of a label's text depending on its contents. I believe I've coded that fine, but the problem is that the settings for the label in the designer view pane are overriding my code!Is there a way to disable certain options in the designer view so that my code can work?

I moved a project so I could work on it in two places. When I opened the project, I have only worked on it from one computer, my form did not show in the solution explorer so I moved it back. I opened the project and everything was there but I was not able to see my form layout in designer view. The code is there and it builds and looks right but I can't see any of my form components and I need to edit some properties.

I am an experienced developer but new to VB and I'm having a problem with viewing a subclassed tabpage in designer view. I have created several classes that are subclasses of TabPage. They display fine when the application is run and I can view the code with no problem.
However, when I want to fine-tune the controls and I go to the View Designer, I get a list of the controls rather than the displayed form. It looks something like this:
<icon>ListBox1 <icon>ListBox2 <icon>BtnAdd <icon> BtnRemove <icon> GroupBox1
I expect I'm leaving something out of my class definition which is as follows:
Imports System.Windows.Forms
Public Class TabPageExample
Inherits System.Windows.Forms.TabPage
Private sTestType As String
Private dTestDate As Date
[Code] .....

What is a standard way to open the Designer (automatically generated) code for a VB file?
As a workaround, I can get to it by searching the entire solution for some keyword that is usually only found in those files: Global, Partial, etc.

I have a very simple setup, single mycontrol.ascx with assoicated mycontrol.ascx.designer.vb and mycontrol.ascx.vb file.
mycontrol.ascx embeds a single reference to a custom control: "MyMenu":
<mM:myMenu id="myMenu1" runat="server" />
This has created a protected reference in the mycontrol.ascx.designer.vb file:
Protected WithEvents myMenu1 As Global.CustomControls.MyMenu
Now, when I breakpoint the Page_Load() event of mycontrol.ascx, and inspect the members returned from the type via:
Me.GetType().GetMembers()
I cannot any reference to myMenu1. If I look at the control with intellisence, the property is accessible:
Me.myMenu1
what I'm missing and what I need to do to access designer created properties at runtime through reflection?

i added the COM reference to:Crystal Reports 9 ActiveX Designer Run Time Library 9.0 i have some code that prints a crystal report:
'print report
Dim Appl As New CRAXDRT.Application
Dim CrystalReport As New CRAXDRT.Report
[code]....
Code works fine on my Windows 7 64 bit computer because I have Crystal Reports 9 installed on that computer but i want this to work on other computers that don't have Crystal installed.I have published my app and installed it on another Windows 7 64 bit computer and it doesn't work.I think i need to have the craxdrt.dll install and register on the users computer.
how can i include this in my setup? I already include the Interop.CRAXDRT.dll when i publish (publish status: INCLUDE/Download Group: Required/Hash: Include) but it doesn't make a difference.i am using vb.net 2010 express?

When I open VB projects in Visual Studio 2005 and attempt to view a form view designer I have started getting "File Download - Security Warning" Message prompting a .tmp file in the location of my project. If I close all open designers and rebuild the project I am then able to open the designers OK.I saw a suggestion to 'restore file associations' in Visual Studio and tried this but with no success.

When one of my students opened his project yesterday, the Form he designed for it was no longer available. He could run the program but he couldn't edit the form as it had disappeared. Later he couldn't run the program at all as the error said that the form name wasn't part of the WindowsApplication. What's going on?

I am using Visual Studio 2008.
I have my project set to "Copy if New"
I created a form with variuos fields from a table.
I hit F5 to run the application and enter in test data and save.
I exit the project and then go back in and the new data is there.
I exit the visual studio 2008 completely and then go back in and the new data is there.
I did the above last night several time and the new data was always there.
This morning all of the new data I entered is gone... I have NOT changed the data base schema at all.

I really want to make use of the toolstrip and databinding but these two technologies keep conflicting with each other. I think the root cause is something to with the fact that the toolstrip buttons don't recieve focus in the normal way.
I invite you to try the following:-
1. Create a form and put some text boxes a tool strip with a save button on it.
2. Write a query or sproc to get a datatable back and bind your text boxes to the field in the datatable.
3. In the code behind your Save ToolStripButton put some code that makes an arbitrary change to a field on the dataset (it doesn't matter whther this field is bound to a text box or not). eg:-
m_DataTable.Rows(0).Item("CommissionRatePerc") = "0.0000"
4. Put a breakpoint in the save and run the form.
5. Make some changes in the text boxes. Do not leave the last text box but rather click save while a text box whose contents you have edited still has focus.
6. When your code hits the breakpoint, query the value of the data table field that is bound to the text box you were editing when you clicked save - it will still contain the unedited value. Unless you do something about it that unedited value is going to get saved back to your DB.
We did get around this problem by explicetely setting the focus to another control on the form before saving. That worked most of the time because it prompts the text box to flush it's value back to the datatable (nb EndEdit does not work, although you'd have expected it to). However, and this is the reason I suggested you add a line of code that changed a value in the underlying datatable in step 3, if you change a value in code in this way before the value from the text box get's flushed back then it doesn't seem to matter what you do, the user's current edit is simply lost. They will still show in the text box, though, leading your user to believe that the change has been committed when it hasn't. Our final solution is that we never ever change a value in the adtaset in the code behind our toolstrip buttons. That's working but it's a pretty big restriction.

I have no idea what I have done wrong here, so I'll just attach my project as a zip file and see if any of you are kind enough to look into it for me.I am reasonably experienced in C#.NET but having trouble using VB.NET for a school assignment.I cannot open half of my forms in designer view because "To prevent possible data loss before loading the designer, the following errors must be resolved".

I created primary/start up Form for my VB2005 app (called Admin.vb). Now when I go back to the solution explorer, I can see Admin.vb but it doesn't have the form icon and clicking it doesn't open the form. Instead it opens the code. All of my other forms are fine and have the right icons and open in the [Design] view ...The form obviously still exists as it opens in runtime but I can't seem to open the design view for it.
