Visual Studio 2010 - Diagnose Program Crash During Execution?

Feb 15, 2011

My program keeps crashing every time I try to run it on another machine other than my own dev system. It runs just fine on mine but crashes on everybody else's when I install and run it. To make matters worse, it only gives me the generic "[name here] has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience". So i never can find out why and where it is crashing!!!!

Winforms - Load System.Drawing V4.0.0.0 On A Windows Form In Visual Studio 2010?

Mar 4, 2012

I've decided to learn Visual Basic .Net as this is what some of my colleagues work with, and this will allow me to work with them on projects.I have purchased Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 Step by Step and downloaded the sample files. When I am trying to debug the first sample application (a Windows form), it is telling me that it can't load System.Drawing V4.0.0.0. However, if I create a new Windows Form application (C# or VB.Net) this works fine.

I had a look at the References tab in the project settings and System.Windows.Forms is referenced, but the version referenced is 2.0.0.0. I have removed and re-added this reference and it stays at 2.0.0.0 and I still get the error.Does anybody have any ideas as to what may be going on?

IDE :: Opening One Of UserControls In Designer Causes Visual Studio To Crash

Feb 25, 2009

Using Visual Studio 2008.I have been coding for some weeks with a problem whereby if I try to open a certain UserControl in the Designer, I get many errors, all saying the Class of one of the Controls on the Form does not exist. If I rebuild the project, the IDE realises that the class DOES exist and will then render the form for Designing. This has never been ay problem at Runtime. Now, however, if I try to open that same UserControl in the Designer, Visual Studio crashes, sends an error report and restarts.Visual Studio gives me no error report or advice. What can I do now? I need to get to the Designer.

.net - Why Does Visual Studio 2010 Keep Crashing When Try To Load A Database?

Dec 5, 2010

I create a new Windows Forms Application project in VB.NET without changing any of the settings or labels. Then I click on "Add Data Source" and go through the steps in my programming book. Except that Visual Studio is crashing with a message stating that VB encountered a problem...checking for causes...restarting VB.

Sometimes I get to click the "Debug and Run" button before this happens; other times, it occurs before I move all the labels in form from the data source; and still other times, it happens when I click the "Stop Debugging" button.

I have tried removing VB and reinstalling it, but this still is not helping. (If it matters, I'm getting my copy of VB from [URL]

How can I stop Visual Studio from crashing whenever I try to load or work with a Data Source?

Can't Load It Into The Visual Studio 2010-editor/compiler?

Feb 22, 2011

I have a project written in Vb6, and I can't load it into the Visual Studio 2010-editor/compiler, because no wizard pops up. The idea then was to install Visual Studio 2008 and try to get to 2010 via that. But apparently the downloadlink for 2008 is not working. Does anybody have answers or ideas to my problems.

Visual Studio 2010 - Project Folder?

Jun 27, 2011

So if I am working on a project in VB.net (really any visual studio project), I am able to create folders. My project is getting rather unweildy (over 30 classes) and I think it would be beneficial to store for example data structure classes in a folder "ds" and user controls in a folder "uc". Is this OK? Will it affect the way I reference the classes? Are the folders simply for my own use and structure or do they actually have some kind of impact on my project as a whole?

PS in case you are confused, I am referring to the structure shown in the "Solution Explorer". Sorry if this is a dumb question or not clear, but I have never worked on a large project like this before.

Add A New Data Source To Visual Studio 2010 Project?

Jan 7, 2011

im trying to add a new data source to my visual studio 2010 project. As it stands my project consists of a few windows forms. I plan on making it access a database (made in access, unless this is a problem), and be able to perform pre-set queries, search/sort, and basic delete, add, edit functions. I will hopefully be later adding the function to print reports according to the database entries. However, the problem i am having is that when i go on to data sources, and click add new source, the following happens:3, it asks me which connection i will be using, i click new connection, then in the new connection dialog i choose the following : Microsoft Access Database File (OLE DB), then i browse for the database i made in the 'database file name' box, Then i delete the default username in the log in to database bit, as my database has no protection.

I'm trying to add a folder and some files within it to a Visual Studio 2010 Express VB.NET project. I have read the answers to questions on this subject here and here. They both say "select folder, right click, and then select Add To Project". But when I right-click in this way, no "Add to Project" option appears. Does anyone know why this is so, and what I can do about it, or alternatively another way of adding a folder to a project?

Sql - Upgrading Old Crystal Reports Project To Visual Studio 2010?

Jan 5, 2012

I have to update and old VB project made with Visual Studio 2005 that uses Crystal Reports to Visual Studio 2010. I've installed the Crystal Reports plugin for VS 2010. I can compile the program under VS 2010 but when I run it and try to generate a report I get many errors popping up from the Crystal Reports Viewer. When I compile and run the project in Visual Studio 2005 (with the old Crystal Reports plugin that comes with it) everything works fine.

The problem is caused by SQL Expressions that are SELECT statements that are not enclosed in parenthesis. This is a problem because there are ~250 SQL Expressions like that in the report file (and it's not the only report with this problem). When I look at the .rpt file in Crystal Reports 10 and use Database -> Show SQL Query the SQL Expressions have parenthesis around them despite there being no parenthesis around these statements in the SQL Expression Editor. When I do the same in Crystal Reports 2008 the SQL Expressions don't have the parenthesis included.

Is there a way to make Crystal Reports 2008 or the plugin in for VS 2010 automatically include the parenthesis around SQL expressions, or was this feature removed? If it was removed, is there anyway to enclose the SQL expressions in parenthesis other than editing each one manually?

I've tried it on Windows 7, Windows XP, and Windows Vista machines... and all had the same problem, so I think it's more of a package configuration issue than a machine-specific problem. Here's the most useful information that I was able to get out of it:

Visual Studio 2010 Crashed On Compiling Project [Using C++ COM Component]

Jun 16, 2011

I have a simple Win App VB project with a single form in it. I also have an Active X component which I am adding onto this form. This component is made in C++. On building the VB project i get the message "COM Reference 'CPPLib' is the interop assembly for ActiveX control 'AxCPPLib' but was marked to be linked by the compiler with the /link flag. This COM reference will be treated as a reference and will not be linked." but it compiles successfully. When i try rebuilding it or opening the view designer of the form VS2010 crashes. The project is locally creating two dlls namely "Interop.CPPLib.dll" & "AxInterop.CPPLib.dll". I have made the Embed interop types False for both these references.

IDE :: Visual Studio 2010, Target .net 3.5, Dll Fails On Load - System.Drawing, Version=4.0 ?

Aug 30, 2011

I have an desktop application that references several dlls. All are targeted for .Net 3.5, x86. The applicaiton has been deployed for several years and was upgraded from visual studion 2008 to 2010 last year. I have made several changes to the app since then (as recently as last Thursday) with out any issues. Now, everything builds, but when I run the application, I get a type initialiazer error when one of the projects is loaded by the main application.

The error messsage is {"Could not load file or assembly 'System.Drawing, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.":"System.Drawing, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a"}.

There were no changes to this project since the last successfuly deployment last week, but today I am getting this error.

In Visual Studio 2010, Project Will Not Run In Debugger Until Vshost32.exe Process Restarts?

I'm running VS2010 4.0.30319 SP1. My WPF project runs once in the debugger, then won't run again unless I wait 30-60 seconds. I've found that in Task Manager, there is an associated vshost32.exe process that starts when I first load the project. It remainswhile the project is running, but exits when I close my app. After 30-60 seconds, the vshost32.exe reappears and I'm able to restart my app. But until vshost32.exe reappears, my app will not run.

Possible To Rename The "Project" Folder In A Visual Studio 2010 Project?

Nov 22, 2010

I have a VB.NET project in Visual Studio 2010 for an Excel Add-In.I use the "My" namespace, and in general it seems that the "My Project" folder contains configuration information about the project. My problem is that I need to change the name of this folder, because my version manager system won't accept spaces in file or folder names.Edit: There is a hacky way to do it, by renaming the folder and changing all references in the .vbproj file. However, the may work for a command line generation, but it won't work the next time the project will be opened in Visual Studio. The IDE will create a new "My Project" folder, and complain that it can't find the settings in it.

Visual Studio 2010 VB Windows Forms Application - Organization Of DLL Project References?

Mar 26, 2012

In my VS2010 VB project I have a lot of external references to DLLs, to the point that organization has become a major headache and I'm wondering if I am going about it the wrong way. My assembly references include common redistributables (SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1, ReportViewer 2010 SP1, DataVisualization, as well as some useful 3rd party dlls from CodeProject and CodePlex.

Currently, I am copying each DLL into a 1st level folder (/dll_lib) under my named project folder (under the solution folder), and adding the reference from that path. However, I see that Visual Studio copies the DLLs to various other locations (/bin/debug or /bin/release) in my project when I build the project or solution, and some of the 3rd party DLLs come with instructions to copy them manually to /bin.

What is the "best practice" for where to put the DLLs? Can I just put all of them under /bin and let the build event copy to /bin/debug or /bin/release as required? Should I try to force a single reference path for the dlls in the project output?
