Now I want to make a special kind of Porky -- let's call it UberPorky -- for which I want to change ALL instances to either IsHuge or not IsHuge. What I'd like to do is this:

Public Class UberPorky
Inherits Porky
Public Overrides Shared Property IsHuge As Boolean

The trouble is, I can't do that. I'm not allowed to reference MyBase or Me in a Shared property.

C# - Check If A Class Is A New Instance Or Has At Least Once Property Populated Before Saving To Database

May 15, 2012

I thought this would be an easy one but I can't think of a good way to do it.User submits a webform. Based on submitted information I build three classes and assign their properties from received data:

UserInfo userInfo = new UserInfo();
UserAddress userAddress = new UserAddress();
UserEmployer userEmployer = new UserEmployer();

Based on submitted information some classes end up being populated with properties and some do not.

What's the best way to check whether userInfo class, for example, ended up with properties assigned ? I don't want to save a particular object to the database if it doesn't have any real properties assigned and all of them are set to either null or "".

I only want to save the objects that ended up with at least one real property assigned.ps. using NHibernate to save data to db

I have got this error and i want to know what property access is, i have deliberately not shown the line of code that it is to do with as i do not want to be given the final answer. I think i understand 'must assign to the property or use its value' does this mean that when setting something the object being set (as i am trying with font stlyle i will use it) font style must be set to bold or italic and then the bold font needs to be put somewhere?

Office Automation :: Controlling Access 2003 From 2005 - Error Occurs When - Access Any Property Of "access.Forms("frmTest")"

Jul 17, 2009

I have a program in VB.NET 2005. At some point I have to open an Access2003-Application for getting data in it. I do that by pretending my program is a human user and let it do all the work in Access as a human user would do. Filling Fields, pressing buttons etc. I use the Primary Interop Assemblies for that. So far so good. That code is in use for over half a year now. In the last week I got Office 2007 installed on my machine. Of course I tested the installed version of my program if everthing still works. Every test was succesfull. But if I do the same tests in Visual Studio it always crashes.

All I get is this Errormessage: {"Das COM-Objekt des Typs "Microsoft.Office.Interop.Access.FormClass" kann nicht in den Schnittstellentyp "Microsoft.Office.Interop.Access._Form3" umgewandelt werden. Dieser Vorgang konnte nicht durchgefhrt werden, da der QueryInterface-Aufruf an die COM-Komponente fr die Schnittstelle mit der IID "{66B22FB4-F70E-4F03-A00A-F76E9ADBBF10}" aufgrund des folgenden Fehlers nicht durchgefhrt werden konnte: Schnittstelle nicht untersttzt (Ausnahme von HRESULT: 0x80004002 (E_NOINTERFACE))."}

For all who can't read german:

"Microsoft.Office.Interop.Access.FormClass" can't be converted in to "Microsoft.Office.Interop.Access._Form3" ... Interface is not supported.

Code I use:

Dim access As Microsoft.Office.Interop.Access.Application = Nothing
.
.
.
access = New Microsoft.Office.Interop.Access.Application()

[CODE]...

The Error occurs when I try to access any property of "access.Forms("frmTest")"

Allow More Than One Instance Of VB App To Access Data Files?

Jan 1, 2012

I have just completed an upgrade of a VB6 app to VB.net (2008). Everything works as it should except for one (essential) part. I cannot open more than one instance of the built app without getting a file access error. Now don't laugh but my program uses Random Access files to store the data (i know, i know the 1990's called and they want their programmer back). Anyway I've been using this method since the early 90's and it's never let me down. Until now that is. VB6 allowed any number of users to access the files but for some reason VB.net gives the following error: The process cannot access the file "C:lah blah" because it is being used by another process.

.net - Finding Out Which Instance Of A Form Initiated Another Form Or Module

Oct 5, 2010

I'm trying to figure out the best way to reference a control on a form from within a module. Unfortunately the form is just an instance, so it's not as easy as calling form.control...

Dim ChildForm As New frmSearch
' Make it a child of this MDI form before showing it. '
ChildForm.MdiParent = Me
ChildForm.Show()

That form has an option for printing, which calls another form where certain options are chosen. The print form in turn calls a function in a module, which tries to reference back to the origional form.

childform as new frmSearch -> frmPrintForm -> sub okToPrint (in module Print)
okToPrint tries to reference a listview on frmSearch, but can't find it.
For Each itmX In frmSearch.lstResults.Items

So the solutions I can think of off the top of my head are:

1. Somehow divine which form is the caller of frmPrintForm

2. Pass ChildForm to the frmPrintForm as a variable to be passed on to module Print..

3. Use frmSearch directly instead of using an instance of it.

Number 1 would be my preference, as I don't want to have to pass forms around like that.

C# - Access A Shared/static Member Through An Instance Variable?

Mar 3, 2011

Here's an example of what I'm talking about...

Public Class Sample1

Public Shared Function MyValue() As Integer
Return 0
End Function
Public Sub Code()

[Code]...

Me.MyValue gives a warning in VB.NET and (the equivalent code gives) an error in C#. Is there a particular reason for this? I find it more intuitive/natural to access the shared function using 'Me.MyValue' - but I avoid it to keep my warnings at 0. Did someone else just decide 'Nah, it makes more sense to do it the other way' or is there some technical reason I don't understand?

EDIT: I was thinking of it wrong, more like a 'sub class' in OOP. Even if something is declared in the base class, you access it through the instance you have. But that relationship is not the same with shared or static.

Sql Server - Access A Shared Function From An Instance Of An Object?

Dec 28, 2010

The context of this question is that I am trying to debug performance issues (apart from the obvious ones I already know about and can find).I inherited a code base (VB.NET) for an ASP.NET app. This is an app that was developed way back in .NET 1.1 days, and was the first .NET app for a lot of the developers who worked on it.

In this code base is a class called DatabaseUtility that contains several Shared Public methods as well as non-Shared Public Functions and Subs for CRUD operations to the database (SQL Server).

It is common in my "BL" that a method creates an instance of the DatabaseUtility which essentially figures out what the connection string should be and opens a connection, as well as giving the developer a handle to the other methods contained within it.Dim utility as New DatabaseUtility()

Once I have that, I start to create parameters that I am going to pass to one of the methods in DatabaseUtility (like GetDataSet). There is a Shared method in my DatabaseUtility called CreateParameter which does essentially that. It creates a SqlParameter object so I can add it to a Parameters collection.

Now, the code base is littered with a lot of this:

utility.CreateParameter(...)However, because CreateParameter is a Shared method, I am not sure what is going on behind the scenes. I know because it is a Shared member that an instance of the DatabaseUtility is not created when I call it like this:DatabaseUtility.CreateParameter(...)

However, because I am calling it from an instance (utility), does that change the behavior at all?

.net - Object Reference Not Set To An Instance Of An Object: Child Property?

Nov 21, 2011

I'm checking If a border's child property is not set to nothing or equal to a given element, but whenever I run the program, it says that it's set to nothing and crashes. Here's my code:

If Not Me.Child.Equals(Nothing) Then ...
If Me.Child.Equals(value) Then ...

Both gives an error. What should I do to pass these lines? Also in C# it would look like this:

if(this.Child != null) ...
if (this.Child != value) ...

But this time it doesn't give an error.
