Adding Permissions To A Directory?
Feb 8, 2007
I have been working on creating a small application we can run that will add permissions to a folder during an installation of a new application. The application requires read/write access to the folder and all subfolders. For whatever reason I have been instructed to include this in and install package that will be pushed out using SMS. Below is a sample of the method I use to add the user to the folder and give the appropriate rights to that user:
[Code]...
This works fine adding the user account to the folder and with with appropriate rights. I need it to give rights to the folder I select and all subfolders and files, This is where I am stuck. Does anyone know how to grant permission to a selected directory and all subfolders and files?

I need to create a directory with the permissions restricted to all users but only the program can modify in it. I want the program to create new files and write text in this texts files, but nobody should see or modify the content of this files and even better if nobody could see either inside the directory itself.

I've developed a Windows Form application that contains a function where a user will query AD using a users last name in an attempt to get a list of all domain users that contain all or part of the last name. This function works well if the user is an administrator, however in some cases a department manager, who only exist in the Domain User AD group, needs to use this function. When the user with only Domain User rights uses the function all queries come back empty. I can take the same application to another domain and user with just Domain User rights can use the function just fine.
I assume that the first domain that I mentioned might be using Group Policy to prevent Domain Users from making a query against AD.
Is it truly a Group Policy or some other setting within the domain that prevents this?
The current administrator of the first domain I spoke of is fairly new and has no idea of the workings of AD or Group Policy. All domains that I mentioned here I believe are running Windows 2003 Domains.

I'm trying to set ACL's on a folder using Directory.SetAccessControl. More specifically, I want to grant "Users" full control on a folder. AddFileSecurity works perfectly. AddFolderSecurity does not. It's result is that "Users" will get added to the folder's ACL but "Full Control" is not checked off (nor are any other permissions).
Imports
System.IO

I have a small application that creates users in the AD. It adds the users fine, and creates them a home directory. My problem is with granting the user permission to the home directory and is two foldFirstly the code detailed below adds the user to the folder, but because the account is newly created it displays as the SID rather than the name, not such a big deal, but sometimes the code fails as the replication has not caught up and the user isnt found. I beleive the answer here is to use the SID rather than the users name to add permissions, however I am not sure how to retrieve and store this when the account is created using directory services. Secondly and more frustrating is that once the user is added to the folder ACL their permissions are all blank.
Try
Dim Dinfo As New DirectoryInfo(Directory)
Dim DS As DirectorySecurity = New DirectorySecurity()
Dim Rights As FileSystemRightsFileSystemRights = FileSystemRights.Modify

I have a function that works perfectly when I attempt to add a user from the same domain into a group of the same domain.
Function AddUserToGroup(ByVal strUserDN As String, ByVal strGroupDN As String, ByVal strGRPDC As String, ByVal strUserDC As String) As Boolean
Dim oUser As DirectoryEntry
[Code]....
The error is actually being thrown on the Invoke line, but as I said earlier, if the user is in the same domain, this works perfectly.

Is it possible (I'm sure it is) to validate a user's credentials against Active Directory without using Directory Services?I'm building a Browser-Based WPF application which requires users to login to and get validated via Active Directory. Since .Net 4.0 (or maybe 3.5) accessing Directory Services from an Application requires the application to be fully trusted. Since IE won't provide full trust to an application if it doesn't have the signing certificate in it's cert store, the application is refused startup permission.
If I don't use Directory Services, then I can leave the application as Partial Trust and validate my user's credentials without having to install a certificate on each user's machine.

I have a straight-forward task I'm attempting to accomplish. I have the mechanics down, and need to hammer out the details but I'm stumbling across one small point. :)
This script is supposed to take the files in the local C:Temp directory, and copy them to a selected user's shared directory on the file server.
Protected Sub btnCopy_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs) Handles btnCopy.Click
My.Computer.FileSystem.CopyDirectory("C:Temp", "\MAVERICKVOL1Users" & ddlName.SelectedValue & "DESKTOPRECORDINGS", True)
End Sub
This script does indeed work (and I'm aware I need to create exception handling) but it only copies what contents are on the server's directory of C:Temp rather than the local source directory.
I'm using VB.NET/ASP.NET to achieve this.
How am I able to direct my function to use the local user's directory rather than the remote server?

I am going to need to create a windows form for work that we can connect to a database table, select a directory and move files from the directory that are in the table and move to another folder. The directory will have sub directories that I need to search for the file name and move. I would like to have the table hold the file name (or path) and move all files that are in the database. There might be 20 files or 1000. Depends on the client we are processing for.

With Vista we are having a permission denied error when an application tries to change properties of a file in Program Data folder... before replacing with a newer version of the file.Changing of security permissions for a standard user is not an option. Is there a way we can grant the premissions for an application developed in VB .net to give permission only to change properties of this file.

If default 'sa' account has sys_admin permissions for the whole SQL instance and all its databases. On the database itself, if I don't have db_datareader permission enabled, I would assume it doesn't need it as it is implied but I was wondering in .net, is there way to check if db_datareader has explicitly been enabled and not just implied from the 'sa' being a sys_admin.

I have a project that I am testing with Windows 7, its almost complete but doesnt function without elevating the users permissions, I've tried a few of the sample codes I've found online and they don't seem to work... This has been tested on a admin account, but still requires elevated privaliges... I believe becuase it directly effects critical and non-critical windows services (starting, stopping, retreiving the status, enabling or disabling them)

I understand the UAC could be used to implement this "admin only" restriction, but as I havent even tried using the UAC Settings area yet. As I said, a link to helpful content would be cool, an example would be great.Running Visual Studio 2005 under a Visual Basic Environment.
