I am planning to make a setup wizard for my program through visual studio 2010. My program uses SQL databases, and I just wanted to know if there is a way to check if SQL is installed through the setup wizard and if not install it. Or at the very least provide a link to where they can get an easy setup file.

And if so, any pointers on how to get started figuring this out? I searched, but all that comes up are the manual way to install IIS.

I have sent out software created with VB2008 Express and everything has installed correctly on my PC which is running windows vista. But they can't get it to install, one is running XP the other Vista, they get the following errors

For the moment, I've moved on and am developing my application using VS2010 Pro Beta, but I'd really like it to be able to be built with express edition, since we are generally not a .net shop and even if one or two developers have VS PRO it will not be available to our entire team.
To be the accepted answer and claim the bounty, you must provide sample code and instructions that will allow a Windows Service to be installed and uninstalled using vb 2008 express edition. You don't necessarily need to start with my code (but the essentials of it are included below).

I am using VB Express 2005 because the machines my applications are running on are more likely to have .NET 2.0 installed. Is there a way to use VB Express 2008 but stop the client asking for .NET 3 3.5 (especially as the functions I am using are pretty basic!)?

I'm researching and trying to wrap my head around programming in VB before I start working on any projects. I have a little bit of experience with ASP Classic so some of the syntax looks familiar, but I can't get a handle on database integration. Let's say I am creating an address book. Each installation is a stand-alone (no network connectivity). How are databases used in this situation? Are they built using VB Express and packaged into the installer or can you create them separately (using either Access or MySQL) and then package them into the installer? What is needed to read and write to these databases? Are there extra bits of software that need to be packaged into the installer to allow access to the databases?
What if this application does connect to a centralized database (let's say a MySQL or Access database on a web server). Is the connectivity handled the same way? Sorry for so many questions, but I just can find the answers I'm looking for when searching. I'm not necessarily looking for the actual code to do this, just an explanation of how it's possible (or even a link to some examples/tutorials).
I have made setup of my application consisting of VB.net Windows Application and SQL Server Express 2005 SP4. I have attached SQLEXPR.EXE with proper arguments into Custom Action with commit option.
Now whenever i want to try to install my program is running properly But SQL Server Express is not running showing error (Another intstallation is running....)
So now i want to know how to install SQL Express 2005 SP4 before my package installed using VB.net Package and Deployment.
I tried installing VB.NET 2008 express edition and I had to stop it because there was no network connection.Now it just gets frozen half way through the install everytime. Where are the registry values so I can delete them and install the program. So irritating.

View 5 RepliesSince VB 2005 express does not really install properly in windows 7, here is how to get it to install and make it work right. It's very simple.
1. Right click on the VB 2005 express installer file and click "Properties" in the menu.
2. Now click the "Compatibility" tab.
3. Check the box that says, "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"
4. Click the drop down menu and select "Windows Vista Service Pack 2. (I haven't tried service pack one.)
5. Now check the box that says "Run this program as an administrator" and click "Apply," then "OK"
6. Run the installer.
Wait until VB 2005 express has installed to do these next steps.
7. Make a desktop icon for VB 2005 Express
8. Right click on the VB 2005 express icon and click "Properties" in the menu.
9. Now click the "Compatibility" tab.
10. Check the box that says, "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"
11. Click the drop down menu and select "Windows Vista Service Pack 2. (I haven't tried service pack one.)
12. Now check the box that says "Run this program as an administrator" and click "Apply," then "OK"
VB 2005 Express should now run on you Windows 7 machine! (Yipee) Notice that it is necessary to repeat the same process for the installer file as well as the actual VB program becuase they are two different files and need to run in compatibility mode.
Trying to install VB 2008 Express Edition, on a laptop, that I just installed Windows 7 Ultimate x86 on, I got the attached screen shot.

I have written a program in VB Express 2008 and published it so I can install on another PC. I created an application using VS2008. I am having a problem on only one PC. If I log on to the PC as the domain administrator, it deploys and runs just fine. If I log on as the user I get an error that basically says "The referenced assembly is not installed on your system. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800736B3)". The error comes when running Venodr.appref-msl. VENDOR is the name of the application. The source is System.DeploymentSystem.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException I upgraded the user to a domain administrator and it still will not run. The PC is XP SP3
