If you build and deploy UserControls, Components etc do you give them strong names and put them in the GAC or do you simply place them in the same folder as the executable?I've made a component that will be given to other developers and they will, in turn, deploy it with their own applications. If I give my component a strong name and install it into the developer's GAC then I assume that the developer using my component will also need to place it in 'his' customer's CAG when he deploys his own application containing my component.

I created a Windows Application using VB.NET 2005 Express Edition. In my project I have two references to DLLs from a 3rd part product, so that I could access its API (Ascent Capture 7.5 from Kofax if you needed to know). For the two references, I have set the Copy Local property to False, and in the app.config file I am using assemblyBinding to reference one of the DLLs.When I build the application and then execute the EXE file in the inRelease folder, everything works fine. When I do a publish and try to run the setup.exe application that is created, I get an error message that basically states the DLL I referenced in the app.config file needs to be installed in the GAC.So why does my application work fine from the Release folder without having to do anything to the GAC, but I cannot install using the setup.exe from the Publish? I would like to use the setup.exe because I need to install this on other machines than my own.

Two separate but related questions about deploying a Visual Basic 2008 .net application:1. Click One installs in a cache under local data. The EXE launches from the cache even if not on-line. I don't want my users to have a runnable EXE left over in their cache after exiting the program. Is there a way to delete or disable the cache contents on close of app or equivalent?
2. My EXE uses an interop DLL. I want my EXE to be a single stand-alone file so that I don't have to copy both the EXE and the DLL to the user. Is there a compile setting to incorporate everything, includng the DLL, into the EXE.First question relates to Click Once Web deployment. Second question refers ONLY to ordinary COMPILE, not click-once.

I have 2 dll files from a third party, and they have the same name (v7 and v8). My program needs to be able to use both of these dll's (meaning wether the enduser has a lisence for v7 or v8 of the thirdparty dll, they can still use the program). But I am stopped from referencing both of them as they have the same name. How do I resolve this? Searched the web and found info about sn.exe and strong names, but can't find a good explanation of how this works. Anyone?

I am building a dll-Assemby A which references another Assembly B. Assembly B is strongly named and installed in the GAC of my development computer. An other computer will not have assembly B installed in the GAC.
Question: If i handle strongly named assembly B like a private assembly and copying it into the bin-directory by specifying local copy = true in the properties-window, will the programm run on the other computer?

How they relate and differ from each? What are the best practices for version control? Is there a primer about publish online? Or a good book?
And is it possible to make ClickOnce and a msi in one solution of VS 2008? If so, is there any conflict or pitfall?
BTW I am using VB if that makes any difference.

Please see bottom edit for where I am currently at I have created a pivot table that works fine when the pivot cache is defined as:
Dim ptCache As Excel.PivotCache = mainHighway.PivotCaches.Add(SourceType:=Excel.XlPivotTableSourceType.xlDatabase, SourceData:=mainHighwayData.Range("a1:v7500"))
My problem is that the number of rows changes from day to day, so I figure out the number of rows in the worksheet and then use that in my pivot cache:
Dim highlRow As Integer
highlRow = mainHighwayData.Cells.SpecialCells(XlCellType.xlCellTypeLastCell).Row
Dim ptCache As Excel.PivotCache =
[code].....
This returns the proper number for the last row, but once again throws the same type mismatch error.
Edit: I found out another bit of information, but I am not sure what to do with it. The pivot table works fine if the values in it are <= 65536, but the second I increase the range to 65537 I get the type mismatch that has been haunting me. This is true for all numbers >= 65537. I know that 65535 or there abouts used to be the last row in excel, but that is no longer the case. Also when I create the pivot table manually in excel I have no trouble and it has all of the data. I am using int or long, so it should not be an overflow or anything. Anyone have any thoughts on why VB.NET will not let me make a pivot table based on data with more than 65537 rows?

All,I seem to have stumbled upon a ClickOnce error that stops me from auto-updating. When I Deploy my program using ClickOnce it publishes to the specified location and installs just fine. I can run my program no problem if I activate it from the start menu. However, I have code that registers the program as the default to open a specific file type. Naturally, I want my user to be able to double click on the file type of my choice and have my program open like normal. All-in-All this works.
The problem arises because I need my program to check for updates before loading my program, much like it does when I open the program from the start menu (I set the auto-update check within the ClickOnce options). However, this check does NOT run when the user double-clicks a file type to run my program, it merely skips this step and opens the program. So first I tried to find a way to run the Update manually through code, what I cam up with was this: [Code]

I requested a Code Signing Certificate from my own domain Certification Authority on my Windows 2008 R2 domain controller.
When trying to publish my code to my webserver via Clickonce, it throws "an error occurred while signing: Invalid provider type specified"
In order to get the certificate I duplicated the Code Signing template on my CA, and tried both options available:
1) must use Microsoft Software Key Storage Provider
2) use any provider available locally
algorithm is RSA, key minim size 2048, Hash SHA1, alternative format unchecked

What I want is a Global Error Trap that will not stop code execution. What I have found is examples where each module requires some code or a Try block. I need it to be totally generic. Everything from UnHandledExceptions to conversion errors.
If I have to use try blocks all over the place then it is not Global Error Trapping.
I need code at the highest level possible that will always catch any and all errors reported by VB.[code]...

I have got a bit of code which creates an error when you start debugging. the code is:
Dim Gravitee As Decimal = TrackBar1.Value / 100
This code is a declaration (outside of a sub) so that it can be used in any subs I choose. I don't know why this causes an error?

I normally use the following for global error handling:
Code:
Dim currentDomain As AppDomain = AppDomain.CurrentDomain
AddHandler currentDomain.UnhandledException, AddressOf MYExceptionHandler
AddHandler Application.ThreadException, AddressOf MYThreadHandler
I normally don't have a MDI application, and When I force an error, neither of the events get fired. I don't have anything in a try catch block. How do I do this with a MDI application?

I'm trying to install Visual Basic Express edition 2010 on my windows Vista computer. The .net framework 4.0 is installed (or so the control panel says), but the visual basic installation fails every time it gets to "Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 Express," which is the first item to be installed. before installing, I uninstalled the .net framework 3.5 along with vb and c++ 2008 express editions.First, I get the following error message 7 times in a row: The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package.
The error code is 2908.Then, I get the following error message: Error 1935.An error occurred during the installation of assembly'msddslmp,version="10.0.0.0",publicKeyToken="b03f5f7f11d50a3a",processorArchitecture="MSIL",fileVersion="10.0.30319.1",culture="neutral". refer to Gelp and Support for more information. HRESULT: 0x8002802F.Then, the installer quits, with the screen: Setup could not install the following component:Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 Express - ENU?

I have a Windows Form application that has a global error handler to display unexpected errors.
Namespace My
Class MyApplication
Delegate Sub ProcessParametersDelegate(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal args() As String)
[code]....
1) for the same deployed code, I SOMETIMES get line number in the displayed StackTrace error message and sometimes do not, even when the error message includes source code that I have written rather than a referenced binary. The project is compiled with a DEBUG configuration.
2) The application strangely minimizes to the tray when the error occurs (I thin it is unlikely that anyone can diagnose this issue w/o my more code posted, but I'll mention it anyways)
3) When I try to intentionally raise an error by, for example, dividing by zero hoping to test by global error handler, I get a dialog error message from the interactive debugger rather than jumping into my global error handler (which i want to debug because there is more to it than I posted.) Do you have any idea how to triggerand force teh execution of the global event handler?

I have two projects in a solution. One is a class library with my FTP, GPG and some other classes that get compiled into a dll call CBI.Utilities. The other is my main app which in a few places call the ftp class. I added the reference to the main solution by browing to the project from references under the main solution and now I get this error when I try to instantiate the ftp class.
"Could not load file or assembly 'CBI.Utilities, Version=1.0.2053.21021, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=78bbe40a91a1660e' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040)" Should I be making a reference to the DLL or to the projects. Either way I end up with a reference cbi.utilities.
