Configuration Manager Not Under Build?
Sep 8, 2009When I go to Build, Configuration Manager is not listed there. How do I get to it?

View 6 RepliesI added a new application recently and I find there is no Configuration Manager. I went to Tools-->Settings and checked Expert Settings, but Configuration Manager does not show up in the Build Menu. It only shows Build Project and Publish Project. I also tried to add Configuration Manager to the tool bar - it was added, but it is grayed out.
I'm trying to get the compiler Configuration Manager to show up. By the way, all of my 8 other VB 2010 Express projects have a Configuration Manager option in the build menu. However, none of those 8 projects were started as a new application in VB2010 - they were all conversions of old VB6 applications (first converted with VB2008, and then with VB2010).
how to solve the error message " ConfigurationaManager not declared" when used to connect to database here is the line of code which gives the error
SQLConnStr= ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("SQLConnStr").ConnectionString
I have a vb.net 2008 desktop application to make changes to it. Since the production database will be changing within a month, I know that i need to change the .net remoing.
1.I change the configuration manager file (app.config) in debug mode to point to the 'new' test database, however the changes are not pick up. The application is still pointing to the current database. Thus can you tell when what kind of files.I need to change so that this application picks up the 'test' data base?
2. After I have tested the changes that need to be made, I will need to deploy the changes. Thus i am assuming that I will need to do something different so I can put the application changes into production. Thus, can you tell what kind of extra dlls,exe, xml, and other files I will need to include in the deployment package? Is there anything else I need to do in the deployment package? This application uses .net remoting to have the database connect to the various proejct files in the entire solution file.
I want to release an application I made. The only problem is, IT WILL NOT RELEASE. I was told to use the configuration manager BUT another problem. This option is disabled!
View 2 RepliesHow to call the configuration manager to get the connection strings instead of having the connection string in the code. I have seen a sample of how to do it in C# but can't get it to translate over to VB.Net.
View 9 RepliesFor some reason in VS2008 Configuration Manger 'Release ' option is missing and I can't build and deploy the application I worked on for weeks! Debug option works fine.
View 5 RepliesWe have a new build machine to start using for our programming team. We are still trying to figure out how we want to organize everything to get the best configuration for building EXEs and DLLs.
We are using VB6 and VB.Net 2005, and VSS2005.
We were thinking of making working folders set for each project, release and support tickets. Does anyone have experience with a similar set up? What were your likes/dislikes?
with vb.net 2005 how to configure my IDE for release / debug build configuration from which tab i should set it
View 2 RepliesI am wondering how you would go about coding a VB Project with a File Dialog box or something to that affect that could be used to have users select programs that are already on their desktop and move the icons and the program names into my application. I am sort of going for a File Program Popup Box that prompts the users to check off certain programs they want to add to my VB Application or to show a list or programs on their desktop. Is there anyway to complete this task with Visual Basic?
View 8 RepliesFrom my DLL project I have succeded in making AutoCAD launch by pressing F5 from VB.net IDE (Visual Studio 2008) en route to try to make debugging of the DLL easier ...
... however one last obstacle is currently in the way and the obstacle is that for some reason when I hit F5 and AutoCAD is launched my breakpoints are not recognized at all... and program runs from start to finish instead of allowing me to debug ...
It issues a strange message which says "The following module was built either with optimizations enabled or without debug information... to debug this module, change its project build configuration to Debug mode..." and it is all weird because as far as I know I am not in release mode .. but in debug mode (anyhow I am relatively new to Visual Studio .NET so I am thinking that my impression could be that I am in debug mode when in actuality I maybe in release mode)...
Here is why I think I am debug mode ...
1. From Solution explorer ... when I click on the Solution Name and view its properties ... the Active config property says Debug|Any CPU
2. When I look at the properties of the project and look at the compile tab it says that the Configuration is Active (Debug) and under Platform it says Active (Any CPU).
3. Under the Advanced Compile Options of Compile Tab from project properties ... Enable optimizations is UNchecked ...
Anyhow with all the settings mentioned above it seems that I have everything okay but then the message above proves otherwise ... and so at this point I know that I am still missing something ... like a setting somewhere... wondering what else do you think am I still missing?
As additional info...there are seven projects in the solution and it is the main one (the one that I set as startup project) whose properties I refer to in all the paragraphs above.
I am trying to build custom configuration section in my app.config file. I am using the following as my example: [URL]. According to this article, I am supposed to inherit from the ConfigurationSection class, add the desired section to my app.config file, and then specify a "configSections" declaration in the app.config file to identify the section and the class that should process it. My problem is that I cannot get the class loader to load my class for processing the section.
If I follow the example and set up my "configSections" as:
<configSections>
<section name="MyStuff.Configuration"
type="MyStuff.MyConfigurer"
allowLocation="true"
allowDefinition="Everywhere" />
</configSections>
I get the following error:
Could not load type 'MyStuff.MyConfigurer' from assembly 'System.Configuration, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a'.
I think the error is telling me it can't load my class from the System.Configuration DLL and that makes sense; the class is in my application code. So how do I tell it to look in my application code to find the class? Do I have to put my class in its own DLL to get this to work? As an alternative approach, is there some way I can just find the section in the application configuration and process the XML myself? The app.config file is the ideal location for this information. Also, this would be easier for me than going through all of these contortions to do what should be a relatively easy operation.
I am interested in building a simple GUI window using VB.net that looks more or less like the Firefox download manager (press Ctrl + J when you are in firefox to see how the window looks like). However, instead of Search, I would like to have a text space where I can enter the download URLs.
So basically, initially, I have a blank window with a clear list button and a URL text box at the bottom, as I type in the download URLs and press enter on keyboard, the text area at the top shows the download file name as well as the progress bar.
One more thing I would like to add is to have the window to automatically resize itself, meaning the more jobs I added to a list, the longer the size of the window will grow, up to a certain limit.
This is my first attempt on coding up something on the GUI side, so I am just wondering if there is anything to get me start with, is there like a package or library to get me started? Or, obviously preferably, is there already a package of something like this in VB.net?
Receive 'ConfigurationManager' is not a member of 'Configuration' in VS2008.I read all of the topics in the forum about this error Tried adding areference to System.Configuration.dll to the project and an "Imports System.Configuration" to the vb file.Still get an error

I have 3 components :
1.Manager : dll containing Iterface definition and other things
2.Implementation: dll containing Implementation of the Interface
3.Executable: (maybe this one could be a external application or another dll using the libraries)
I have particular methods (iside the interface dll file) that extract information of real Implementation from AppSettings keys in order to instance it using reflection. I use the Manager inside the Excecutable, but when I try to retrieve a especific key defined in "Manager.dll.config" (appSettings), the value returned is empty because the configuration file used is "Excecutable.exe.config" I need this configuration information in Manager config file because this Manager will be used from other programs and the configuration must be centralized into that config file to replicate the possible changes to every app calling this dll.How can I to specify that the ConfigurarionManager.AppSettings must extract values from manager.dll.config file?
I am creating a custom config section that will allow me to manage what ELMAH exceptions I want to ignore from my VB.NET/ASP.NET app. Here's my code. I made it easy to paste in a blank code file if anyone's up to the challenge of diagnosing the problem.
CODE:
When I execute this code:

I get the error An error occurred creating the configuration section handler for IgnoredExceptionSection: Could not load file or assembly 'WEB' or one of its dependencies..
What boggles my mind is that this all works fine in my C# console test app after I convert the code from VB.NET using a web utility. However, when I paste the VB code from my web app into my VB.NET console test app, it doesn't work there, either, so it appears to be a C#/VB issue. What am I doing wrong here?

I have a Form with a Media Player in it. Which plays a Song.

A particular VB.NET project is actually throwing 'Build Failed' But when I try rebuilding again it says 'Rebuild Succeeded'. It keeps alternating this behavior. Kind of random. Any vbc.exe issue of long locking the PDB or xml files?
View 9 RepliesI have a vb.net 2008 windows form application that I was just assigned to work on. how to maintain and test changes to both the pre build and the post build events? Can you tell me how to test these events? My postbuild event, I believe calls a project file in the solution file that wraps files together in a bundle in debug mode. Can you tell me how the posbuild event works and when it is called?
View 2 RepliesI am using 2008 Express Edition. I am trying to make a Release build instead of a Debug build.Under Tools->Options, Projects and Solutions->General - I checked Show advanced build configurations. The option to switch configurations does not show up in the IDE.
After this, I went to the Project Properties->Compile and switched the Configuration from Active(Debug) to Release.After building, I looked in my project directory, however only in the Debug sub-directory was the .exe and nothing in the Release sub-directory.I have used Visual C++ Express Edition, where I noticed that if you do not change to Release in the IDE than after changing to Release in properties, resets the project to the last configuration setting which is usually Debug.how to make the Debug/Release box available in the IDE, since Tools/Options does not make it show up?
I just created a simple application. I Builded that using build->build myapp. I got .exe of that application. i runned. all went fine. but when i closed that app, even after closing it is in memory. it is still running. how to deploy it properly?
View 12 RepliesI have some very simple questions about making a release build exe in vb.net using MS VB 2010 Express.
I realize that my project's executable is built in the bin/debug folder. However, when I copy this to any other location on my computer or someone else's, this executable does not function. I have read that I need to create a release build but in MS VB 2010 Express, when I use the Project-Properties menu and change the Compile tab configuration to Release and the path to binRelease, I still get the exe in the binDebug folder and not the binRelease folder.
1) Is it normal that exe's from the debug folder do not function outside of the debug folder?
2) Most importantly, if the release build produces a faster exe, could someone please explain step by step how to do this with MS VB 2010 Express ? I do not see any button on the compile tab in the project properties that actually builds the release.
I have three classes Employee, Manager and Salesman. Manager and Salesman classes inherits Employee class.
Employee :
Public MustInherit Class Employee
' Field data.
Protected empName As String
Protected empID As Integer
Protected currPay As Single
[CODE]...
Manager :
Public Class Manager
Inherits Employee
[CODE]...
Salesman :
Public Class Salesman
Inherits Employee
[CODE]...
Now I have created a object of salesman and manager using the following code:
Dim objSalesMan as Employee=new Salesman("xyz",1,2000,5000)
Dim objManager as Employee=new Manager("abx",2,5000,"production")
Is this a good programming pratice or should I use:
Dim objSalesMan as new Salesman("xyz",1,2000,5000)
Dim objManager as new Manager("abx",2,5000,"production")

using System.Configuration And in this piece of code ConfigurationSettings is undelined
Dim dbPath as String = ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings("DatabasePath")
Dim email as String = ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings("SupportEmail")
I'm a newbie to this, so hope I can explain myself well enough. I'm trying to develop an app that will need to query IIS configuration settings. This includes Default Website settings, Virtual Directory settings etc.
