I have a vb.net 2008 desktop application to make changes to it. Since the production database will be changing within a month, I know that i need to change the .net remoing.
1.I change the configuration manager file (app.config) in debug mode to point to the 'new' test database, however the changes are not pick up. The application is still pointing to the current database. Thus can you tell when what kind of files.I need to change so that this application picks up the 'test' data base?
2. After I have tested the changes that need to be made, I will need to deploy the changes. Thus i am assuming that I will need to do something different so I can put the application changes into production. Thus, can you tell what kind of extra dlls, exe, xml, and other files I will need to include in the deployment package? Is there anything else I need to do in the deployment package? This application uses .net remoting to have the database connect to the various proejct files in the entire solution file.

How to call the configuration manager to get the connection strings instead of having the connection string in the code. I have seen a sample of how to do it in C# but can't get it to translate over to VB.Net.

I added a new application recently and I find there is no Configuration Manager. I went to Tools-->Settings and checked Expert Settings, but Configuration Manager does not show up in the Build Menu. It only shows Build Project and Publish Project. I also tried to add Configuration Manager to the tool bar - it was added, but it is grayed out.
I'm trying to get the compiler Configuration Manager to show up. By the way, all of my 8 other VB 2010 Express projects have a Configuration Manager option in the build menu. However, none of those 8 projects were started as a new application in VB2010 - they were all conversions of old VB6 applications (first converted with VB2008, and then with VB2010).

I have a custom control that as a custom property. The property has several preset values to chose from a drop down. The control can be added to a form. The property can be viewed and set in the properties box in the IDE. It all works fine.
Here's the problem: I can create new versions and recompile the control and/or the application without the properties preset value being lost as long as I do it in Debug mode. However, once I try to recompile in Release mode the custom property values predefined setting is lost. I first thought it was something with going from debug mode to release mode. But it seems to be ANY time I recompile in Release mode the custom property values are lost. Is this a quirk in VS that needs a configuration setting, etc. to get around it?

I am having a strange issue when building assembly's for one of my modules.I was getting errors when running on 64bit which I traced back to being related to the assembly being 32bit specific. Our modules are(or should) all be built to be bit agnostic.Running CorFlags.exe on the assembly showed the following.
Version : v2.0.50727
CLR Header: 2.5
PE : PE32

I am trying to execute a VB .net console application called Application1 that I created using Visual Studio 2008 with .net framework 3.5. When I run it under the windows scheduler or from a command prompt it works fine. When I try to run it under a purchased job scheduler, I get a message stating that directory APPLIC~1.config is missing. What properties does system.configuration use when it tries to find an application's .config file? Can these be set when my application starts?
Note: I was able to use ConfigurationManager.OpenExeConfiguration(My.Application.Info.DirectoryPath & "" & My.Application.Info.AssemblyName & ".exe") to get around this issue but would like a cleaner solution. I do not want to do this each time I want to retrieve an appSetting entry.

I have a solution with multiple projects (vb.net) , with some projects I have the optino to choose between the configuration: and in other projects I don't have that option. (I've had the option before). Has anyone an idea to show the option again. I can change it in project file (with notepad) but that's not userfriendly.

Does anyone know why there would be no option to create a database project in VS 2008? In the New Project dialog, under Project Types I have no node for Database Projects. I've looked under Other Project Types as well. Every tutorial I read says this option should be in one of those two places, but not for me :-( I do have SQL 2005 installed on this machine.

I am using the TableAdapter Configuration Wizard and under Advanced option I click on "Refresh the data table" and carry through to the end of the wizard. However when I run my code and want to update the dataset on the form I get the error message "Update requires a valid Update Command when passed with DataRow collection with modified rows". So, ok, when I look back at the Dataset with right click and configure I find that that the "Refresh the data table" under Advanced Options is no longer ticked, even though I had ticked it before and finished the wizard. Somewhere along the line the tableAdapter is losing this value.

Today I realized that I no longer have a "Web Content Form" option (where you select a MasterPage) when I add new items to my ASP.NET web application. I know how to manually add a MasterPage to a web form, it's just such a pain - and I really don't understand why Web Content Forms suddenly are missing.
Visual Studio Team System 2008, SP1, VB.NET, ASP.NET 3.5
I recently installed and uninstalled VisualSVN. My best guess is that screwed up my poor VS somehow. How do I get Web Content Forms back?

I have 3 components :
1.Manager : dll containing Iterface definition and other things
2.Implementation: dll containing Implementation of the Interface
3.Executable: (maybe this one could be a external application or another dll using the libraries)
I have particular methods (iside the interface dll file) that extract information of real Implementation from AppSettings keys in order to instance it using reflection. I use the Manager inside the Excecutable, but when I try to retrieve a especific key defined in "Manager.dll.config" (appSettings), the value returned is empty because the configuration file used is "Excecutable.exe.config" I need this configuration information in Manager config file because this Manager will be used from other programs and the configuration must be centralized into that config file to replicate the possible changes to every app calling this dll.How can I to specify that the ConfigurarionManager.AppSettings must extract values from manager.dll.config file?

I am creating a custom config section that will allow me to manage what ELMAH exceptions I want to ignore from my VB.NET/ASP.NET app. Here's my code. I made it easy to paste in a blank code file if anyone's up to the challenge of diagnosing the problem.
CODE:
When I execute this code:
CODE:
I get the error An error occurred creating the configuration section handler for IgnoredExceptionSection: Could not load file or assembly 'WEB' or one of its dependencies..
What boggles my mind is that this all works fine in my C# console test app after I convert the code from VB.NET using a web utility. However, when I paste the VB code from my web app into my VB.NET console test app, it doesn't work there, either, so it appears to be a C#/VB issue. What am I doing wrong here?

I really like the coding speed that vb.net provides, but I don't like the possibility to forget to declare variable types, return types of functions, etc. and that is why in each class I use[code]..
Is there a way to define those two options on the project/solution level?

the combo box style 1 has both the drop down option but also a manual entry option. I need to know how to code it so that when you manually enter data, it takes that data and places it in a text message "The shipping charges for "data" is $15" displaying in a text box. Shouldn't be hard but have developed a mind block.

1. I have read that keeping Option strict on and Option infer off is good practice and will insure your code is tight and properly written. I would like input regarding this, pro's and con's from those who are in the know.
2. Having said that, I have set Option strict on and Option infer off in an existing program I wrote (that was working perfectly mind you) with them off and on respectively. I went through and cleaned up all the errors on the 'need AS' and casting of variables, but one is leaving me a bit put out.[code]
I have also read where using My.Computer.System.Directory.GetFiles() instead of System.IO.Directory.GetFiles() is probably not a good thing, but when I change to this I get no error, but also no dataI am thinking I should stay with the strict on and infer off but am really slogging through getting this code correct.Running Win7 on Dual Quad Core XEON Intel Extreme with 8Gb RAM.

I have three classes Employee, Manager and Salesman. Manager and Salesman classes inherits Employee class.
Employee :
Public MustInherit Class Employee
' Field data.
Protected empName As String
Protected empID As Integer
Protected currPay As Single
[CODE]...
Manager :
Public Class Manager
Inherits Employee
[CODE]...
Salesman :
Public Class Salesman
Inherits Employee
[CODE]...
Now I have created a object of salesman and manager using the following code:
Dim objSalesMan as Employee=new Salesman("xyz",1,2000,5000)
Dim objManager as Employee=new Manager("abx",2,5000,"production")
Is this a good programming pratice or should I use:
Dim objSalesMan as new Salesman("xyz",1,2000,5000)
Dim objManager as new Manager("abx",2,5000,"production")
