Console App Timer To Call Web Methods Every X Minutes?

Dec 22, 2010

I am coding in VB.Net, VS 2008. I wrote a console app that consumes 2 web methods from a web site application. I need to enhance this console app so that it launches the web methods continuously, perhaps every x minutes (during business hours), but never before the last invocation has terminated, whose duration may vary, depending on how many accounts there are to process.

Originally, I scheduled the application using Task Scheduler, but I think this doesn't prevent two invocations at the same time.

Although I have seen many posts on using timers, I haven't found exactly what I need.

So far I have:

Dim aTimer As New System.Timers.Timer()
AddHandler aTimer.Elapsed, AddressOf TriggerWebMethods
' Set the Interval to 10 minutes:

[Code]....

When should Timer.Elapsed be used vs. Timer.Tick? What is the difference between Timer.Enabled vs Timer.Start, and should I be selecting just one? I would like the 2nd web method to kick off when the first one is done.

Timer To Run 30 Minutes After The Hour?

Jul 15, 2010

Is it possible to configure the System.Timer to run say 30 minutes after every hour? I have searched google to figure this out but all it shows is how to set it where it goes off once an hour, if I launched the app at 2:45 then it would go off again at 3:45. I can forsee issues down the line with this approach where if it went off at a specified time it would not have that issue.

Normally i would use Scheduled Task for this however it doesn't give you the option for hourly just daily, perhaps i'm wrong about this.

Create A Simple Timer To Count Seconds, Minutes And Hours

Oct 21, 2010

I have three sets of labels, lbl_seconds, lbl_minutes and lbl_hours. These labels have the default value of 00:00 and I want the timer to change that for each label. I have googled this but I cannot seem to find any good info on it. Do I need three separate timers? I have also noticed that the timers have their own tick event handler. I guess it's in this that I need to change the value of the label. But I cannot figure out how to do just that.

I will preface this by saying Im previously an asp developer and am learning oop programming/Vb.Net

Im working on a 3 tier architecture and trying to abstract my code as much as possible since I have a very large intranet to convert. In my business layer I am defining my classes with management methods. Below is an example of one of my classes.

My question: Is there a way for me to genericaly refer to the class type and object type so that I dont have to continualy refer to the class name/type "ServiceRequest" throughout the class. For example something like:

Console Application Sub Call?

Nov 28, 2010

When I call a different sub from the main sub in my console application, I have to type in the word twice for it to go to the sub. But I have noticed that it only does that when I have it to be recognized at the second instance (I think I used that right). What I mean by that is this.

Sub Main()
if console.readline = "Test1"
call _Exit_()

[Code].....

If I type Test1, it will call the _Exit_ no problem. But if I call _New_, I have to type it in twice.

I also tried putting them both into if statements instead of elseif.

I have also change the order of the calls, this is where it get interesting to me. If I were to change the call from "Test1" to _New_ ()(So, instead of calling _Exit_(), it will call _New_()) If I do this, then the _New_() will work no problem
and I don't have to type it in twice, but I do for the _Exit_() now.

Calling .dll Method From Inside A Timer Won't Work(Console Application)?

I have a .dll file (Interop.ACTMULTILib.dll) that I use to connect to a PLC. This .dll contains a sub called ReadDeviceBlock2(byval devicename as string, byval size as integer, byref data as short). When I call this method in my main it works fine, if I call it from another method that was called by main it works as well.However, it doesn't work when I call it from my Timer_Elapsed sub? I guess this has to do something with threads but I can't figure it out.

Async Web Service Call Within Console App

Nov 24, 2009

I have a console app that is supposed to async call a web service...i don't get any errors but the completed handler doesn't seem to complete correctly. I have a subroutine with a loop that is supposed to fire off say 6 seperate calls to another routine that calls the service. The completed event handler routine puts data into the database..If i put a thread.sleep under the call to the routine calling the web service. The completed event handler fires but only one record is put in the database instead of the hundreds expected and only that one webservice call appears to fire.I should mention that this works as expected when calling the sync method of the web service within a console app and the asyc calls work as expected from a windows forms app. I just need it to work async within a console app..

Making Class Methods Instead Of Instance Methods In .NET?

Mar 29, 2010

I am not sure how clear my question is by the title, but I am trying to make Class methods instead of Instance methods in Visual Basic that way I don't have to waste memory and code creating temporary objects to execute methods that don't need instance variables.

I am not sure if you can do that in VB but I know you can in Objective-C by using either a "+" or "-" sign in front of the method declaration. And in C++ (at least I think, I can't remember) you put the static keyword or const keyword in front of the function.How would I do this in VB if it is possible? Or should I just make a separate set of functions that are not members of a class?
