Async Web Service Call Within Console App

Nov 24, 2009

I have a console app that is supposed to async call a web service...i don't get any errors but the completed handler doesn't seem to complete correctly. I have a subroutine with a loop that is supposed to fire off say 6 seperate calls to another routine that calls the service. The completed event handler routine puts data into the database..If i put a thread.sleep under the call to the routine calling the web service. The completed event handler fires but only one record is put in the database instead of the hundreds expected and only that one webservice call appears to fire.I should mention that this works as expected when calling the sync method of the web service within a console app and the asyc calls work as expected from a windows forms app. I just need it to work async within a console app..

Asp.net - WebRequest Async CallBack Code Only Gets Call The First Time?

May 28, 2012

I am an absolute beginner on ASP.net (VB.) Please pardon me if the question is too obvious for the experienced members.I tried to make a simple WebRequest in the async mode in case the target URL takes long to provide the data. In my code below, I just want to see if the callback block (RespCallback) is called correctly every time. If all goes well, lblResult should have the string '123' appended to it every time I click the button which calls the 'GetData' sub.

However, the lblResult only shows 123 after the first click. After the subsequent click, the lblResult only gets appended with '12', as if RespCallback is never called. When I tried to debug this in Visual Studio, the execution actually stepped right into the RespCallback part and the lblResult.Text watch actually shows '123123' but the resulting Web page always shows only '12312'

I am sure I am missing something basic here, but I just don't know what. I was even guessing that it has to do with browser cache (hence the result changes for the second time) but I don't know how to fix that either.

Tear Down Wcf Service After Each Web Service Call?

May 5, 2012

I inherited a working WCF Web Service with one major flaw - the WCF Service consumes memory and does not release unless the service is restarted. After a half a day of requests hitting the web service, the memory on the server hosting the service climbs to close to 2 gig and is dead in the water.

I'd like to be able to release memory after the web service has received its response but cannot figure out how (WCF is still new to me). [code]...

Making An Async Function Not Async?

Jun 3, 2010

I'm trying to write a 'developer friendly' wrapper for the Windows API EnumWindows - the problem is that the API uses a callback function that gets invoked on another thread, where as I want my wrapper function to simplify this and make it more useful by working like any other normal synchronous function and just returning a value.

Now if the API just called the callback once that would be fine, as I would just call the API and make the wrapper function wait until it got a signal from the callback function telling it to continue... but the API calls the callback function over 100 times (once for every window handle that exists). The biggest problem is that there is nothing that indicates that any particular call to this callback function is the last one, so my wrapper function has no idea when it is safe to continue and return the list of window handles to the caller.

The only solution I could think of is to do this:

1. The wrapper function calls the API and starts a timer that waits 2 seconds before it raises the Elapsed event. The wrapper function then pauses until it receives a signal (ManualResetEvent)

2. Each time the callback function is raised by the API on a different thread, it stops the timer (so this is before the 2 seconds have elapsed), adds the current window handle that was passed in by the API to the list of handles, then starts the timer again.

3. If the timer reaches its 2 second interval then it is assumed that we are at the end of the windows because otherwise the callback would have stopped the timer. So the timer's Elapsed event handler is what signals the original thread (that the wrapper function is executing on) to continue as we now have a complete list of windows to return.

This works fine and does exactly what I want... but I dont like it.

I dont like forcing the caller to wait an extra 2 seconds after the API has done its last callback but more importantly I dont like assuming that the API will never take longer than 2 seconds between callbacks. In reality on my PC it is never anywhere near that long between callbacks, it is something like 200 miliseconds, but I have no idea how long it would be on a slower PC and I want this to be completely reliable.

Console Program To Run As A Service?

Jul 10, 2009

i'm working on a project that simply changes the wallpaper periodically...it works fine...I created two seperate projects...1) a forms application 2) console application........The forms application gets the data and settings from the user....the console application reads the data and settings from text files created in the forms application and does the job of changing the wall paper...i've got mine set to change every minute...I realy want to get this finished, but am stumped by a few things....

1) how can i get my console application to run as a windows service..have tried the SC Create command..no good.

2)how can i get it so the console program runs as an icon on the system tray near the clock.

3)When i want to publish to create the setup.exe...should i somehow merge the two projects together or publish each one seperatly and use some sort of batch installer.

Consuming Web Service From Console App?

Dec 13, 2010

We have a web app that contains web methods. I want to invoke one of those methods from a console app. I am new at this but I wrote a console app, added a service reference and tried to code invoking it. If my web method is called "Transmit", I expected to see Transmit in the namespace I specified but instead I see "TransmitRequest", "TranmsitRequestBody", "TransmitResponse" and "TransmitResponseBody".What are these things?Have I done something wrong?How do I invoke the web method in the web app from the console app?

.Net Windows Service Console Messages?

Sep 22, 2011

I have a .Net Console application which displays thousands of lines on the console each minute. I want to convert it to a Windows Service, however I still need a way of viewing these messages. There are far too many messages to write them to the event log or even a standard log file. I was wondering if there were a way to write a systray app that could simply intercept these messages from the service and display them in a console window. I have no need to save older messages, I only need to see current activity.

Console Application Sub Call?

Nov 28, 2010

When I call a different sub from the main sub in my console application, I have to type in the word twice for it to go to the sub. But I have noticed that it only does that when I have it to be recognized at the second instance (I think I used that right). What I mean by that is this.

Sub Main()
if console.readline = "Test1"
call _Exit_()

[Code].....

If I type Test1, it will call the _Exit_ no problem. But if I call _New_, I have to type it in twice.

I also tried putting them both into if statements instead of elseif.

I have also change the order of the calls, this is where it get interesting to me. If I were to change the call from "Test1" to _New_ ()(So, instead of calling _Exit_(), it will call _New_()) If I do this, then the _New_() will work no problem
and I don't have to type it in twice, but I do for the _Exit_() now.

Console App Timer To Call Web Methods Every X Minutes?

Dec 22, 2010

I am coding in VB.Net, VS 2008. I wrote a console app that consumes 2 web methods from a web site application. I need to enhance this console app so that it launches the web methods continuously, perhaps every x minutes (during business hours), but never before the last invocation has terminated, whose duration may vary, depending on how many accounts there are to process.

Originally, I scheduled the application using Task Scheduler, but I think this doesn't prevent two invocations at the same time.

Although I have seen many posts on using timers, I haven't found exactly what I need.

So far I have:

Dim aTimer As New System.Timers.Timer()
AddHandler aTimer.Elapsed, AddressOf TriggerWebMethods
' Set the Interval to 10 minutes:

[Code]....

When should Timer.Elapsed be used vs. Timer.Tick? What is the difference between Timer.Enabled vs Timer.Start, and should I be selecting just one? I would like the 2nd web method to kick off when the first one is done.

Call A WCF Service From Code In The .net Framework 3?

I'm working in VB.Net and I'm trying to make a piece of code more generic.In fact, there's a big Select Case statement that build a ProxyServer based on a value passed in parameter (a string).

Select Case _strNteraHL7
Case Constantes.NomPRPMIN306010
strUrl = ObtenirUrl("ProviderDetailsQuery", _strVersion, _strEnvir, True, _blnSimulCAIS, _blnSimulPDS, _blnSimulPDSSIIR, _blnSimulPDSInteg)

[code]....

or something similar, so I can remove all those big switch cases, that repeat the same thing 30 times.objWsHL7 being an object or type "object" at compiling.Again, in another switch case statement,

objMsgHL7Out = _objWsHL7.ProviderDetailsQuery(_objMsgIn)
objMsgHL7Out is a System.ServiceModel.Channels.Message
_objMsgIn is a System.ServiceModel.Channels.Message
_objWsHL7 is an Object

Call Wcf Service From Javascript Or Method?

I want to be able to call the WCF service from this application which is on a different server and have the xml data returned, converted to json format to be used in the datagrid which is a jquery widget. I have tested the web service and it works fine. Should I call the web service from the javascript function within the xml or create a .net method behind that calls the service and then does the conversion? From these how would I get started?

Xml - Post Data To An Url If Someone Does Not Call An Web Service?

Jul 15, 2010

I have kind of a big quesstion...ok here goes...Usually if i understand it well...web services work in a way that i write a method to get some data from the database and then some other user/client adds a reference and calls my service and gets the data...now in my case i have to get the data and actually post it to the user/client in xml(in soap maybe) i guess....so here is what i do...

[Serializable]
public class MyClass
{ [SoapAttribute]

So basically....I serialize it to xml(and soap) and convert it to string and then upload this string to the web service url...I just want to know if what i am doing is right?...i want to basically get the data convert it to soap xml and then send it over to the user's web service url...

VS 2005 - Return Value From Asynchronous Web Service Call

Aug 13, 2009

I'm using ASMX web services in VB.Net in VS 2005. I am calling a function method on the web service that returns a true or false value. This works fine if I call the the web method synchronously, but if I want to call the method asynchronously, the function returns to a sub and there is no return value; therefore, I can't tell whether the result of call is true or false. Is there a way to make an asynchronous call and still get the true or false result (perhaps using the userState Object)?

For Example:
Dim MyResult as Boolean = MyService.GetResult(10)
Dim MyResult as Boolean = MyServer.GetResultAsync(10)
This doesn't work the compiler complains: "Expression Does Not Produce a Value"

Window Service Call A Stored Procedure?

Feb 22, 2012

I used the same lines of codes to call a SQL server store procedure to export sql data to an XML file:

1. If I call the stored procedure from a window form application, it works and generates the file at the designated location.

2. If I call the stored procedure from a window service application with a setup project, and the install process run well, and I started the service, and checked the event log, it showed the service start successfully, BUT it FAILED to generate the file at the destination folder. I also run everything as administrator, but it still failed to generate the file. It made me wonder if a window service can call a stored procedure. Because, again, mine ran fine with the window form appl, but window service, I would like to have your sample codes. I have googled around for 3 days now, but could not find the answer. I use vs 2008, sql server 2008, and Windows 7

.net - Call Web Service Using Client Certificates / Mutual Authentication?

Mar 23, 2012

I'm building a web service client using vb .net. The web service is secured with ssl, basic authentication and also requires client certificates. So I created a web reference in Visual Studio and provided the credentials:

Dim cred As New System.Net.NetworkCredential("usr", "passwd")
Dim proxy As New SimpleFromLocal.simple
proxy.Credentials = cred
Console.WriteLine(proxy.helloWorld())

This works as expected, as long as I turn off mutual authentication on the server side.I added a client certificate like this:

Dim cert As X509Certificate = X509Certificate.CreateFromCertFile(certFile)proxy.ClientCertificates.Add(cert)

The certificate is loaded, but the web service call fails. I could post the exception, but it is in german, which is an issue on its own. It basically says: Authentication failed, because the remote site closed the connection.I tried debugging the ssl handshake on the server side and it looks like the client certificate is not transmitted.So what am I missing here? Is it required to install the client certificate on the local machine?Edit: The error thrown:

Call Uninstall Method In ServiceProcessInstaller For Installing Windows Service Using MSI?

It has "Finish" and "Cancel" buttons. I am creating a new instance of this form on Sub New() of the ProjectInstaller Class, so user can input information, click Finish and installation completes. The service is then automatically started. Now, when I click Cancel on the settings form, I am not able to exit out and halt the installation process. Instead it installs the service !! How can I use the Rollback or Uninstall methods to do the task? I was trying this -

On cancel_click, set boolean var cacelStatus = True
On Sub New() method of ProjectInstaller class, I am checking - If true - uninstall, else - install

How can I achieve this?
