Interface And Graphics :: Picturebox Moving With Constant Speed

Nov 13, 2008

I'm making my first 2D game, and I've created an object inherited from a picturebox, to use as a little man. I've tried to make it move using a timer, but I'm not satisfied with the result. Sometimes the speed seems to change for no reason.

GDI: Make Drawn Object Move And Follow Path/Points At Constant Speed?

Nov 13, 2011

I've come across a very basic problem which I'm sure has a basic answer.Forgive me but I haven't programmed in years and this just a hobby of mine..My problem is that I need a drawn object (say an ellipse) to move to the cursors location when I click. Imagine an adventure quest style game where you view your character in birds eye view, and it moves according to where you click on the map.I can draw the image fine, and move the image around fine - it's more so the formula I'm using which I'm a little stumped on.I have certain requirements though.

1. I need a timer that constantly updates the drawn object's (lets say character from now on) location. Each tick will essentially be the character taking 1 step towards the cursor's location.2. At the end of each tick of the timer, it'll will invalidate the form/control to invoke the paint event, and of course, the objects location will be be updated. It sounded simple enough to create a linear equation based on the objects original location and the location of the cursor when I click. However, that will not give it a fixed speed. If say for example, the gradient (rise/run) between the cursor location and objects location is very steep, the object's y-velocity will be greater than that of the x-velocity

Clock - UTC - Give The Users Current Time Zone/local Time

Jul 22, 2011

So I currently have the following:

2 timers

2 labels

1st label is "Clock" this pulls the time from the users current time zone/local time

2nd label is "UTCClock" Which would be UTC time

Now I have this for the first label: clock.Text = Format(TimeOfDay, "hh:mm:ss tt")

Which would give the users current time zone/local time. As for the UTC.. how would I add in for the UTC time from where the user is located at? I did some searches.. but couldnt find what I was looking for.. IM pretty sure its not as easy as getting the users current time zone/local time.. So im assuming that Theres a "bit more" code into getting UTC time..

Changing EXE Name Based On Compilation Constant

Sep 21, 2011

I have a project in VB.NET 2010 (compiling to x86, .NET 2.0 runtime) that I want to compile into two separate EXEs - a "lite" version and a "full" version. Unfortunately I cannot make two separate projects as it uses the Adobe Reader COM control - and sharing a form using that control between two projects seems to confuse the IDE (something to do with COM Interop, I assume - if someone knows how to share a form hosting the adobe reader control, that would solve my problem too).

I have found this thread: C#: VS.NET: Change name of exe depending on conditional compilation symbol however I don't have any MSBuild experience so I need more explicit instructions. On the "My Project>Compile" tab there is a "Build Events..." button. I was wondering if anyone knows how to set a conditional compilation constant and use that to determine the EXE name (or change it after build). If all else fails I can rename the EXE manually I suppose, but I'd prefer it to be automated.

Getting The Time From An Atomic Clock?

May 28, 2010

I'd like to write a small app to get the time from an "atomic" clock -- I believe the UTC time and then compare this against the system clock.

So far I've been able to get the system time details with the code below but just cannot figure out where to start on getting the atomic clock(s) time.

I did Google this for examples and have not found anything useful, I did find a list of atomic time servers @ the following URL and realise I have to connect to NIST Internet Time Service clock

Dim localDirect As Date = Date. Now
Dim utcDirect As Date = Date.UtcNow
Dim localFromUtc As Date = utcDirect.ToLocalTime()

Alarm Clock - Launching App @ Certain Time

Dec 4, 2010

I would like to make an alarm clock application, however I am having some problems in the brainstorming phase.

My main problem is the fact that I dont know how to ensure the application will be able to calculate the time and thus set off the alarm. For example, when the application is closed, how will the alarm go off?

Ideally I would like to make this app a system startup item, so if the system is rebooted, the application will automatically relaunch - but again, I dont know how to do that.

If the system is sleeping, how can I wake it up? These kind of problems.

Another dilema I have, is if this application is always running, how could I have it go to my taskbar hidden icon menu (the right section of the taskbar next to the time).

JavaScript - Clock On Webpage Using Server And System Time?

Jul 8, 2011

I need to add a clock to a web page. The clock needs to be synchronized with a server but I really don't want to have it constantly check the server as the page will be open 24/7 on several PCs. Is there some way to get the time from the server and then use the systems clock to keep it updated and check the server every 15 minutes or so to keep it synced?

VS 2010 - Shading Some Areas Of Clock Image Based On Time

Mar 30, 2011

I have a table which contains the start date and end date, in my db. What I currently do is simply display both the fields in a ListView control. But instead of that approach, I'm thinking about displaying a 'clock' image and shading those areas with some color. This is similar to a Pie Chart. But the only difference is, I'm going to display a clock's image as background and the shading is based on the time.

'global' Type Timer That Will Allow To Basically Run Clock Entire Time Someone Is On Site

Oct 21, 2009

I'm in need of a "global" type timer that will allow me to basically run a clock the entire time someone is on my site, no matter what pages they go to. I've played around with the timer available for forms but I didn't see a way to make it continue to run after someone left that page. The effect I'm attempting to create is for a timer to start whenever someone hits my site, then every X minutes an event will trigger. This event should happen no matter where they are on the site. I've read a couple articles on timers but to be honest I'm fairly new to VB and I didn't know if I really needed to learn about 'threading' etc, to get a timer to work.

How Can Speed Up My Loading Time

Feb 5, 2008

I was currently writting a Cyber Cafe for the client side which start up with a form that maximize and block all the client control like shortcut key and other security. It's fine to work in my pc and it take only about 5 second to startup the application and lock the client. But when i run the application in a pc that installed with games, it took about 40 second to run my apllication. I notice in task manager panel, the process need to read the whole application before it could load my first form. Is there any idea i can speed up my loading time? I have try to set the process priority to "real time" and startup using batch files, but it still need 30 second to load my first form.

Speed Up Load Time?

Oct 25, 2011

I'd like to write a simple application in VB.Net using VB.Net Express 2008 (uses .Net 3.5), but it's a bit slow to start on my average computer.

1. When starting a .Net application while no other was loaded before using the same version of the framework, I guess Windows must load the whole framework from disk into RAM. Using eg. Process Explorer, how can I check if the framework is already up and running?

2. Is there a way to speed things up? Is there a way to load the framework at boot time? Pre-compile the application to avoid JIT compiling (provided it makes a difference for a small application)? Other tricks to know?

3. Out of curiosity, is Mono smaller/faster than MS.Net? I don't need more than the basic, run-of-the-mill controls.

Download - Calculating Speed And Time Left (Progress Bar)

Feb 5, 2011

I created a software which download files from the web. I also added a progress bar which shows the download progress. Every thing works fine.

Now:
- How can I add a label that will calculate the time left for the file to be downloaded and another label that will tell the speed of the download?
- Would it also be possible to add a label which calculates the size of the file that is begin downloaded?

Here is what I declared:
Imports System.Net
Public Class Form1
Dim WithEvents Download As New WebClient
Dim WithEvents Download1 As New WebClient
Friend WithEvents Label1 As System.Windows.Forms.Label

Here is what I have under the download button:
Download.DownloadFileAsync(New Uri("URL" & ComboBox1.Text & ".rar"), Textbox1.Text & "" & ComboBox1.Text & ".rar")

And here is what I have under Download_DownloadProgressChanged:
ProgressBar1.Value = e.ProgressPercentage
Label1.Text = e.ProgressPercentage & "%"
If ProgressBar1.Value = 100 Then
MsgBox("Download Completed!", vbInformation, "Info")
Label1.Text = "0%"

Public Constant Versus Private Constant?

Aug 13, 2011

When building a class library which contains many classes, all classes uses a lot of common constants and functions, what is the best to do:

1- Declare these constants and functions as public in a module.

2- In each class declare constants and functions used by individual class as private.

The first choice is good for easy and fast implementation, but re-using a class in a different project will require importing the module to the other project. The second choice require a lot of copy/paste for code snippet but a class can be re-used in different project easily.

WCF Service Running A Background Thread To Speed Up Execution Time

Nov 14, 2011

I have a per-call WCF service that serves a number of clients. I'm looking to speed up the services by running some background processes so they don't block or slow down the main function of the services.

One example is that the main function needs to return a set of data, while the background thread needs to record some statistics based on the parameter(s).

Code:

Public Function GetAccountDetails(id As Integer) As AccountDetails
Dim retVal As New AccountDetails
Dim a As New Accounts

[Code]....

If I use this background thread to record the statistic it doesn't block the main thread from returning the data to the client.

It's been working well in test scenarios, but my question is, are there any dangers with leaving this thread to execute without Joining it before returning the data to the client? Could there potentially be any loss of statistic data? Could there be potential memory problems on the server side?

Synchronising Clock With System Clock?

Mar 12, 2009

I'm a totally newb to VB and I want to do this. I want to do display system clock into a textbox. The trick is that I want it to be synchronized with the Windows XP clock. I want to have something like +/- 100 ms accuracy.

Each 'second' change will trigger an output pin to ground into the parallel port. This is very important that the 'second' change in the same time the Windows XP second change. Do not care about the parallel output thing, I'm nearly there. My main concern is the synchronisation with Windows clock.

In my code, I've added a counter that increment +1 at each 'second' change. So, when the 'n' value will reach a determined value, it will trigger another event.

[Code]...

I searched on the net and I found a thing about NIST time server.. Maybe this could be an otpion, but I have even no idea about how using it... I'm a total newb, but I'm ready to learn. So, please use simple language, no hard to understand acronym etc.
