When the AlertsSettings.xml is not present the Appsettings is assigned to nothing. The variables that follow that definition rely on the existance of that information which will normally be set by the load method. But when there is a problem and either of the variables do not get a value how do I handle that in the code that relies on those values. The Settings class deserializes an xml document and assigned values to properties.

I have a DataGridView that has some columns with dates. It binds to an in-memory Datatable which gets loaded from an string array of data passed back from the backend Some of the rows returned have nulls for the date columns. Solution 1: If I define the Date column in the DataTable as "string" I can easily convert those nulls to empty strings and display it in the grid as empty strings (desired results). However, if the user clicks on the date column header to sort by date, it doesn't order the rows as you want. You get a purely string sort order. Not acceptable

The SomeId value is the primary key of the related table. This issue is that there will not always be records in the Bookings table with a Ref value of Someid - so the query throws the following error.
I have seen others have got around this problem with catching the error, but from reading up on this and as per the error information it seems there should be a solution (in VB.NET) to cast the query or some of the fields in the query to nullable types?
Error is as follows:
The cast to value type 'Int32' failed because the materialized value is null. Either the result type's generic parameter or the query must use a nullable type.

I have a Class MessageIndex which holds an integer. I have a custom DataGridViewComboBoxCell which has a MessageIndex variable. If the MessageIndex is not set, the cell acts as a normal DataGridViewComboBoxCell; if the MessageIndex is set, then the GetValue and SetValue methods of the DataGridViewComboBoxCell are overridden so as to return the value of the object from its DataSource at the index of the integer stored in the MessageIndex.
As far as I can tell from stepping through the code, that actually works fine. The object returned by the GetValue function is fetched from the DataSource, based on the integer stored in the MessageIndex.
The problem is that when the DataGridView is displayed, all of the cells are blank. The values of the cells can then be set using the ComboBox dropdown, which appears to work fine.
But why are the initial selections not being displayed? As I say, as far as I can tell, the correct information is being retrieved by the GetValue function of the DataGridViewComboBoxCells when the form is initially displayed. It's just not ending up on the screen.
When I declare two datatables and fill them both from a datatable returned by a function in class, that when i filter the one it seems to filter the other aswell?

I have two functions written in VB.NET:
1) The first function (call it GetValues()) returns values in a SQL database as a list via a stored proc. One of the fields is DateTimeSubmitted. All of this data is displayed on my webpage using a repeater control. It works fine.
2) The second function (call it NiceDate()) I created to change the DateTimeSubmitted to a nice date such as "one minute ago" or "yesterday".
My problem is I have no idea which is the best part of the process to do the conversion (at point of data extraction or in pageload etc.) or in fact how to do the conversion.

When sending numbers over my server/client, I need to first convert them into strings and pack them together into larger strings, then deconvert them at the opposite end. I need to ensure that they occupy exactly the correct number of spaces in the string - for example I need an integer to use up 4 spaces. So for example, if I had a byte, then 2 integers, I need the first character to contain the byte, characters 2,3,4,5 to contain the first integer and 6,7,8,9 to contain the second integer. Then I can retrieve each number from the string using Mid(Position,Length) and convert it back to a number.I know how to convert bytes using chr and asc, but how would I convert my integers into my string and ensure they occupy the correct number of spaces in the string (and back).All the conversion methods I've looked don't seem to fit the bill. Will I need to write my own function to achieve this?
View 1 RepliesI am making a gradient colored text tool for a game I play where they use a 3 digit number as an RGB color code before text. Making gradients by hand is tedious, as to do a gradient you type one letter at a time with an RGB code that changes by 1 in front of each letter.
example: "^090H^190e^290l^390l^490o" Would be a color gradient for Hello
I have a user input text into a text box and choose up to 6 colors. The colors then are assigned RGB values, only instead of 0-255 they are 0-9. (So they look like this 000=black 999=white 090=green, etc.)
I have figured out how to do this, but now I need to place the RGB values in front of the users text while only changing one of the RGB numbers at a time.
So if the color values are 090 and 900:
"090 190 290 390 490 590 690 790 890 990 980 970 960 950 940 930 920 910 900" is what I would like generated with the users text spaced evenly between.
I have no idea as to how I would go about putting three digit color codes between the users text or how to change the color codes one number at a time. I could try to do this on my own but it would be sloppy and probably a lot more code than needed (I have a feeling I should be using a loop or something like 'for each')... It's been awhile since I opened VB!
