Feb 3, 2012I'm trying to learn how to write a data layer class to read in information and populate combo boxes, etc.

View 1 RepliesI am working in VB.NET defining my own classes. I have 5 classes, Policy, Coverage, CoverageCollection, Layer, and LayerCollection. Policy has a bunch of data items, one of which is of type CoverageCollection. Coverage has a bunch of data items, one of which is of type LayerCollection.
Policy
private id as Long
private name as String[code].....
Then I do like "dim p as Policy". So, iIn order to get to properties on a Layer, I reference it like p.cov(0).lyr(0).face. What I am trying to do is add a readonly property to Layer that is calculated using some Layer information but also using something from Coverage (or even Policy). I can take this in as a parameter to the property, but I think there should be a way to get at Coverage/Policy information since I am "under" it already. Is there a way to do this?
i have a combo box that on form load is populated but i need to know when i click an item, i will be able to code how to populate other combo and text boxes with data about the same person.
View 2 RepliesI am getting an error when i try to populate some combo boxes with a value, the combo box has values in and the right amount the code is getting the right number.
the error msg is "Object reference not set to an instance of an object."
I am receiving information via a serial port as Integers. The information is the displayed on textboxes(two text boxes). My problem is that, I am failing to transfer this information to a Datagridview.I have written the following code.
Private Sub BtnSave_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles BtnSave.Click
TxtDuration.Clear()

View 6 RepliesI have an Access Database that contains two tables. I would like to populate 10 text boxes on my form with the data from the tables. For example: Table1 has a list of names 1 thru 5 and I would like to have 5 text boxes on my form when the form is loaded to populate those names. I know how to populate a combo box with the information, but not sure how to do it into individual text box

I am generally following this tutorial, the main differences being I'm using 2008 R2 Express and Windows Forms, he is using 2005 & ASP.NET Web Site:'m building a minimalist Windows Form project for learning purposes. So I'm using a 1-table database with 2 columns, ContactID & Name. I added a dataset file, 'ContactsDataSet.xsd' to my project and added a single minimalist table adapter with just a fill() & getdata() method.Then I added a DataGridView control and connected it to the ContactsDataSet to confirm it was working and that worked fine. I ran it and it filled up with data as expected. Everything up to this point was auto-generated code.

Here is my code so far for the form:

View 1 RepliesI'm in the middle of creating an application that will be used to input customer information whilst the customer is speaking to someone over the phone. This involves the customer giving the employee information such as name, address, postcode etc and the employee inputting that information into text boxes and combo boxes that are in the application.
What I would like to be able to do is after the customers information is given over the phone, I need to be able to send that information to a database which will probably most likely be done by button click. In this case, I'm using Microsoft Access. I'm also hoping that I can do this within Visual Basic coding.
The database is set out with multiple tables which include a customer table and a ticket table and both have multiple fields such as first name, surname in the customers table. Both of these tables are in use with the information that the customer gives over the phone.
I've already asked on other forums and people are where replying giving me third party programs that I could use to implement this, something I don't really want to do.

One of the time consuming factors of writing the DAL is adding and assigning paramters of teh stored procedure if ther are more than 10 parameters and must link more than 3 tables this process will take a horrible amount of time..

I would like to build a base class for my SQL Data Access Layer. I have most of it based out, but have a question about how to handle errors within the base class. I have a method for ExecuteNonQuery, ExecuteReader, ect...

for starters not sure if this is the right place for the post considering that it includes MySQL and VB, its here.I'm trying to load data from one table into a combo box as the data you can select, this i have been able to do "tbl_Wind" using "WindDirID" and "WindDir"
also, I am trying to select (if it exists) a value from "tbl_date" "WindDirID" to select a value from the existing data in the combo box loaded from "tbl_wind"and finally, I want to be able to change the value in the "tbl_Date" depending on if a value is selected in the combo box.when a new record is created in tbl_date it uses default values, so there is always something in the field.below is about how far i got, and its the only part that works (extracted and edited of course to exclude the other queries)

I am trying to prototype an application with a data layer on my computer at home using Visual Basic 2008 express edition with SQL Server Compact 3.5. My production situation at work is SQL Server 2000 and I am using Visual Basic 2005 professional for development.I am trying to write the code to create a seperate data layer. Here is my code. First the data layer:
Imports
System.Data
Imports[code].....
My Problem is that the data does not show up in the text boxes.
I have 5 combo boxes that need to show the same list of items that come from a single dataset table. I have managed to bind the datatable to the combo boxes no problem at all.. but when I run the application and select an item from one of the combo boxes all the others change to the item I selected. After some research I believe that this problem is something to do with using the one datasource so I have tried assigning the dataset datatable to 2 different variables and used them as datasources for 2 of the comboboxes but the same still happens.
A work around to this I can see is to call the same methods and SQL select statements 5 times over to get individual datasources for each combo box but this doing that sounds crazy to me. how I can get around this easily? Code snippet below shows 2 combox boxes and their datasources. I'm using VS2005, .Net 2
ComboBox1.DropDownStyle = ComboBoxStyle.DropDownList
ComboBox1.DataSource = AllergyListDataSet.Tables("ListOfAllergies")
ComboBox1.DisplayMember = "Condition"
[Code]....
Would I be able to for example, write the contents of Textbox1 (say it's labeled First Name) and Textbox2 (Last Name) and make it write to a database. The on the next screen, form, window, whatever....have it say Hello (First and Last name that was put in on the previous screen).

im trying to pick up Visual basic on my own with no friends/family that have any programming experience.. I'm struggling (surprise surprise)Heres what I'm trying to do...I have 1 combo box, It will list product names.. Lets say 15 of them.. (I know 15 i could just as easily specify them individually within VB.. but lets assume I NEED to read them from an excel file.(Excel 2003)
Part 1 :Really all i need to know for now, is how do I load an excel worksheet into VB so I can call data up from the cells / rows / columns..
Part 2 : How do I define Which Cells from Each row or column I want to populate into the combo box... Presuming for the "Product name" combobox I have placed each of the 15 product names in the excel file under Row 1, column A through Row 15 , Column A.I want to avoid this and just call the xls file into VB. (Excel will be installed on any computer running this application if that matters. )
ok so What I am trying to do is have one combo box with employee name and once you choose the employee name for it to populate another combo box with the pay periods that the employee has in the database. So far I have that down and here is my code for it:
