I am trying to build a dynamic validator for a data entry application. I want to be able to query a table for the validators relating to the current task and then be able to reference class properties based on the description of the validators returned.
ex. Validator = "person/firstname"
How do I get to _clsPerson.FirstName?
I have a "generic" Tag class which holds an ItemValue, which at this time is declared as Object. The ItemValue could be one of several datatypes; String, Boolean, Integer, etc. Is there a way to create a class property to identify which data type the Tag is?

I am using VS2008 Pro. I have a simple DVD database built. I'm trying to make a data driven app to store my dvd collection.One of my tables is Actors and is structured as follows.[code]On a form in my app I have a combobox. I'm trying to make it list FirstName LastName ie. Will Smith. I know how to make a query that'll take the LastName and FirstName fields and list it as Actor. I'm having a heck of a time getting it to do that in the combobox as it'll only let me use one field for the display and won't let me use the query I've made.[code]I keep getting some error about schema don't match default query. I know I could simply change the table to only have one field that holds first and last name, but from what I understand that's not proper db practice. I've searched this site and google until I was blue in the face at looking at soulutions that don't match what I'm trying to do.
View 3 RepliesI am designing a desktop application that will be driven by local data. I am trying to determine the best way to accomplish this. The database would contain about 10-12 tables if I use a database and I would imagine no more than 10000 records in any one table (but honestly 99% of users would not have more than 1000 records). I am thinking about using SQL Server Compact.
Is this a good solution? I can certainly include this in my installation, but I am just wondering if anyone knows of a better solution? If this is the best solution, how would you suggest that I create the tables upon deployment? Should I just run "queries" with create table statements in them from my vb application or include a database file or what?

I have this application which has one class. I need to return a recordset of data to the calling form. If i use Properties to return, it can only return only a single value at a time. Right now i'm returning a datareader object with one of the properties.Can anyone suggest a better way to return multiple rows of data to the calling method via Class Property?
View 1 RepliesI have a very simple class that holds a few public properties - ID, Text, Colour, etc. and a Boolean called 'SelectedItem'. Just like the Checked property on RadioButtons, only one item can have its SelectedItem property set to True within a particular group. Note: there will be several separate groups (lists), each allowed to have only one item with SelectedItem = True.
My first thought was that I would probably just have to handle everything outside of the class, setting SelectedItem to False for every other item in a particular list when another item was selected. But that seems rather inelegant to me. So I've been trying to think of how this might be done within the class. For example: could I perhaps have a private string property called say "GroupName" - set in the New sub when adding a new instance of the class - and then use a private shared method to set every item's SelectedItem property to False, provided the item has the same GroupName as the newly selected item? I would have a go at doing this but I have no idea how to enumerate every instance of a class from within that class, or whether that's even possible. Is it? Or is there another (better) way to achieve my goal? Here is a cut-down version of what I've got so far:

As can be seen: instead of instantiating a new ResourceItem and passing that as an argument to the manager's Add procedure, I'm simply passing the details of the new item and the procedure is creating the item from those. I don't know whether this is a good or bad idea - please advise - but I've done it because I couldn't figure out how to make the SelectedItem property only writeable by the manager, so I wanted to avoid having directly accessible objects that could have their SelectedItem property set to True without it deselecting all the other items in the same group. Of course that still leaves the possibility of setting a variable to one of the manager's list items and setting it from there, so I would still like to know how I could prevent that, if possible.
UPDATE: I didn't use the code above in the end, deciding instead to go with Cyborgx37's solution - which seems to work perfectly well for me despite the warnings about best practice. I also realised I would need to use the same class in another scenario where multiple items could be selected, so it was easy to add a Boolean property to the manager to enable that.

I have several other classes that use the 'management class' as a property to derive the value of several of its other properties.Is there a way for me to reference the outer class from the 'management class' functions without having to pass it as a parameter? I ask because several different classes can have this 'management class' as a property and am having a hard time typing the parameter.

However, if the empty constructor was called to instatiate this class then the colortype is not yet set. Therefore, if one accesses the 'IsColorCool' property it will always return 'False'. Now for the sake of this example, I must keep the empty constructor as part of the class.Now I could add some code in the 'IsPropertyCool' to check and see if a ColorType has been defined, and throw an exception if it has not been set, but I don't really want to do that.I also could always move the logic OUT of the property and into a method on the class called 'DefineIfColorIsCool' or something, and make the owness on the caller to make sure the method was called if they want to use the property 'IsColorCool'?

I have procedure (Import) that calls a for a new instance of frmImportData. I also have a class name clsBatch that has a data table property called prpParametersTable.For some reason, I get an error (indicated below with ERROR>>>) when trying to assign prpParameterTable to cv_dtImport2. The error states "Object reference not set to an instance of an object.". Why does this error not happen when I assign dtBP to cv_dtImport1? Both cv_dtImport1 and cv_dtImport2 are equal to Nothing and in my Import procedure dtBP = prpParametersTable.

I have three class files, accounts.vb and transactions.vb in addition to my form.vb. I am unable to retrieve a member variable from on class from inside the other. When the combobox index changes, the program loads the correct account (checking or saving) from two different sequential files. I don't think I have the calcBalance procedure in the correct class file. And that is what I am having trouble with. Accessing it to display it. [Code]

I am trying to make an app that interfaces with Salesforce. Now within salesforce you can customize your database to have any tables or fields that you want/need What I am trying to do is once I do my query, salesforce has your query results returned as a salesforce object. My app basically manages info in salesforce based on rules, sometimes people may need to customize those rules based on fields in the database, however because I dont know what kinds of fields are in their particular database I need to do it programatically...
SO what I want to do is reference the objects property via a string text property name... i.e. if they use a field called "IsFromLebanon" as a boolean I want to be able to access QueryResult.IsFromLebanon. but since I dont know if that field exists or not I dont know how to access its property without spelling out each time. I know clearly thats not going to work, but I dont know how to access the property name without KNOWING the property is going to be there, does that make sense? I dont know if I am making sense or not, it makes perfect sense in my head

I'm trying to create a generic function to build a Linq expression from a list of Telerik grid filters. I'm trying to stay clear of dynamic Linq. Because I don't know the type that I'm building the expression for, I'm attempting to use reflection in the lambda functions to refer to a property, but after applying the fix suggested by @JaredPar I get the error, "The LINQ expression node type 'Invoke' is not supported in LINQ to Entities."
