Database Records Reset To 0 When Debug
May 13, 2012
I've set up a simple database connection using visual basic 2010 express. I have set up a table and dragged the fields onto the form, where a navigation bar appears. I am able to enter and save data when I debug the programme; however when I stop debugging and make some changes, then start debugging again, the records are reset to 0.

This syntax error keeps coming up whenever i click the "commit button" to add a new record to my ms access database. The error is, "Syntax error in INSERT INTO statement."I got help to write a code to accept alphanumeric (e.g SC0001, SC0002...) in my order id textbox and it works fine whenever i click the "add button", but when i click the "commit button" to save the new record into the database, it brings up that error and i have tried to figure it out but still doesn't work.The codes i have written for both the "add and commit" buttons are here below:
Private Sub btnAdd_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnAdd.Click
txtStudID.Clear()

Ok, so I am building my own program to control a video player I have through telnet, I have everything else working except one thing.I have a reset button to reset the player, when I press it, it sends the string "Reset" and the unit resets without a problem.But when I add a code to close the winsock connection upon reset, it doesn't send the string to the unit. I am sure what is happening is the winsock is getting closed at the exact same time it is trying to send the string and so it fails to send, how do I make it close winsock AFTER the string has been sent? [code]

Simple question that does not seem to be covered: If I use a lot of Debug.WriteLine statements in my code, will they be completely absent in my production version?
I mean: Is the compiler smart enough to not emit any code for those calls? Or would I have to surround them by #if DEBUG..#end if directives?

I typically dont use a dataset in a case of new data insertion to the database. But then again, I will run in a problem the weather the inserting data already exsit in the database. Therefore i need to perform a search first. However, if i follow this it will take slow down the application (if the table has 1 million records). One way i could optmimize this is to load the whole table in to a dataset then the application doesnt have to go to a back end trip nwo it can search inthe dataset. Is this the standard way for inserting records?

when using the ExecuteReader() command with an SQL database, with an example as follows:
DUReader01 = DUCommand01.ExecuteReader()
DUReader01.Read()
DUCounter01 = DUReader01.Item("Counter")
I am looking for a simple code example that will test to determine if the database first is empty before attempting the Item()
command.With the above example, the Item() line produces the error "Conversion from type 'DBNull' to type 'Integer' is not valid." for an empty database.
