Deploying Winforms Application To Client Machines Failing On Start
May 5, 2012
This is a VB .NET 4.0 WinForms application. There is a mysql data-source involved with this project. The target CPU is set to any. Problem: When running this application on any computer that has VS 2010 installed along with the mysql connector it runs flawlessly. When installing on a virgin system(ie. No developer environment installed) but that machine does have .net framework 4.0 installed and a mysql server without the connector installed the application falls immediately. So to fix the issue I install the mysql connector MSI.
This immediately fixes the issue on the client system and it runs. The problems is that as you can see below from my Installer setup that the 2 needed DLL files for MYSQL are actually included in the installation package so should not need to be installed separately. So Why is it that using that installer from the images do I need to install the mysql connector? Any Ideas?
Below is a screen shot of the References the program uses and from what I believe I do not need to deploy any of those DLL files with my application other than the 2 MYSQL DLL files. So why is this failing? Below are images showing the project references as well as the Installer Files that are being installed in the application folder. As shown in the image the 2 mysql dll files are to be put in the application folder. There is also a screen shot showing each dll's properties for in application folder.

This question is about deploying a VB6 application that uses an interop component created in VB.NET, specifically, a .NET dll.Using Regasm.exe, I was able to create a .tlb and use it on the dev machine to add a reference to the VB6 project, but how do I go about deploying on client machines, particularly the .NET component?

I am deploying a VB.net 2010 winforms application, and when I install it on the client's machine, the install process also installs an instance of SQL Server 2005 Express. The application connects to a central SQL database on the server. To install, I am using the "Publish" option in VS 2010. Why does it do that? There should be no need for a local instance of SQL Express. Is there a way to avoid installing SQL 2005 Express (I know it is free, but I would rather not have it installed if possible).

I have added COM control AxWindowsMediaPlayer to form in vb.net.and just have following code
Public Class Form1
Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
WMPlayerVideo.URL = "abase.mp4"
End Sub
End Class
abase.mp4 file is kept in directory where exe is there. Every thing runs fine on dev m/c but on client machine application is not lauached.When Interop.WMPLib.dll and Interop.WMPLib.dll are copied to the exe file directory then application is lauched at least but file is not played automatically and even on pressing play button its not played.Is some dll registration required to make it work? or some references needed in project?or some changes on user machine?

I created a simple service that does some inventory and records the data to a MySQL server. The service starts just fine when told to from the services administration panel. However, it will not on computer bootup. I get the famous error.
The InventoryService service failed to start due to the following error:The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. I've read that logs can be a problem, so I disabled the autolog...but that didn't solve any problems. I believe it has something to do with the user not already being logged in and attempting to connect to a remote database. So, I added a function to check for internet connectivity before executing any inventory methods or SQL queries. This did not fix it either.
EDIT: I also am receiving the following error in the administrative logs. I create the service dependant upon the Tcpip service, but it still fails.A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the InventoryService service to connect.

I've just been forced (by hurricane Irene) to shift from XP and Access 2003 to Windows 7 and Access 2010 with no time for testing or evaluating changes.All our databases are still Access 2000 format.Our offices were flooded and our servers got moved around, though they're all still named the same things, and in many cases things are working exactly the same.However, I have a database that I can't connect to.It's an Access front end that links to tables in an SQL Server 2005 back end.When I start up this particular database the first thing it does is fail when running code that had been put in to set up ODBC connections when one didn't exist on the computer that was trying to access the data.[code]I didn't write this code.

I've got a VB2005 application written by a previous coder. I had to move it to a new windows 7 box, since the xp box it was hosted on had catastrophic hard drive failure. It worked fine on the xp box, but it fails on the windows 7 box.
More specifically, I've tracked it back to a specific subsection. It uses the Process library to start pscp, the putty scp command line tool. It has a timer to wait 400 seconds for the process to close, otherwise it stops the process and reports an error.
Unfortunately, on windows 7 it doesn't seem to even start the process, because it does not wait the specified 400 seconds, nor does it report the other error it would give if pscp did start, but failed. Is there a compatibility issue with the process library, or is it some configuration issue?
Update:
Alright, after more testing I've determined that the subprocess is getting spawned, but the parent is not waiting for it to exit.
it seems the VB code myProcess.WaitForExit(40000) is not actually waiting until the process exits. Is this because it can't 'see' the process and believes it has exited?

I have a .NET application which is using the Microsoft.mshtml PIA. It frequently experienced exceptions with a message saying that the Microsoft.mshtml assembly or one of its dependencies is missing. Weirdly enough, this happens on some machines, but works fine on others! (actually, it works fine on the majority of machines)

I have a vb.net 2.0 winforms project that is full of all kinds of business reports (generated with Excel interop calls) that can be run "on-demand". Some of these reports filter through lots of data and take a long time to run - especially on our older machines around the office.I'd like to have a system where a report request can be made from the client machines, some listener sees it, locates a server with low-load, runs the report on that server, and emails the result to the user that requested it

I have made my application to start automaticly when windows start (registry ../currentversion/run/appname + path). In this mode the application start minimized and an little icon appear in the notification icon area. With this icon you can maximize the app or exit it.If you exit the app and start it again using the Menu (Start/programs etc) than the application start in minimized mode (and in this case I would like to have it in normal mode) because the setting autostart is still true.Is there a way you can detect when the application start when windows startup using the above registry or when people click on an icon in the programs menu (or desktop)?

I have this VB ASP.NET Web Service Application project running VS 2005. I'm trying to add references. To do so I click on the "Properties" icon in the Solution Explorer window which presents me with a window to add/update/remove references. I click "Add", I select the reference I want and then "OK". Lo en behold, NOTHING! It simply won't add references (I tried adding several different ones). Specifically I'm trying to add the System.Configuration assembly.

I think my title covers the high level, but for indepth; i need to be able to connect to a machine through and ip and set a enviroment variable, i have over 60 machines in different states all on one network that i need to do this for as well as someother things for the machine. currently this is being done through a PCEXEC command in a batch file they want more control on how this operates. I just really have no idea where to even start looking for the enviroment variable change(setting one on a machine that the app is running is simple we all know that. but on a external machine im lost) on a remote machine.

When a user click the .msi, i want a folder called "Your Files", which comes with two small images by default, to be created in C:UsersYourNameDocuments. In short, MyDocuments.
What i did is put the following code in program.cs:
string myDocuments = Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.MyDocuments);
string downloadArea = System.IO.Path.Combine(myDocuments, "Your Files");
System.IO.Directory.CreateDirectory(downloadArea);
Just before:
Application.Run(new mainForm());
The problem is, this folder will be created every time the user runs the application which is not a good solution, also in this case there is no place to load the two images so it can be loaded while the folder is created. I want the folder to be created once preferably while installing the application, so even when i uninstall the folder "Your Files" and its sub files be deleted automatically along with the program files. I tried to do it via Setup Project, but i couldn't.

Trying to deploy an application written in VB.NET. First had an issue with not including the PowerPacks (what is in this anyway?) but that went away and the application installed correctly once I included it as a prerequisite.Now however once the user logs into the application the main menu just bombs, doesn't even load, the app just quits. I suspected it was the DataGridView and had those suspicions confirmed when I changed the application's startup form to one without the grid.

I have an application that uses a text file for its settings. This file is placed in the application folder but deployment sets its file attributes as "Read Only". I have to manually change this attribute every time I deploy the application or an upgrade. I tried (successfully) to place the text file in the "Documents and settings|All users|Application Data" folder, creating a specific folder for my application in which to place my file. The folder and file were created by the setup process but then, users who did not have admin rights still did not see the file, let alone open it.
I have gone back to placing my text file in the [Programs files]|[Manufacturer]|[Application name] folder but am saddled with manually changing the attributes. Is there a way I can do this programatically during deployment (e.g. by some post-deployment process)?
