Deserializing XML Into Simple .NET Class - Cannot Populate Property From Root Node Attribute
Feb 17, 2010
I have a simple class that I trying to populate from an XML document. The XML file has an attribute called TrackingID in the root node which I would like to get as a property. For some reason, when I deseralize the class, the TrackingID is null. Everything else populates fine. I have tried various attributes on the TrackingID property with no luck.

Basically, it refuses to find the node when the root node contains an attribute.

When I do xml.SelectNodes("DataSet") with the xmlns in the root tag, it finds no nodes. If I remove the xmlns attribute, it works fine.How can I make it work while leaving the attribute?

I had a strange problem editing a class in the property grid whereby the property grid would refresh incorrectly.I managed to reduce the problem down to a class with just two properties. I've included the code at the end to ease explanation.It basically boils down to a class with two properties. The first of which is expandable (a font)The class itself is expandable and also implements the CreateInstance method in the type converter.To see the problem, expand the font, edit, say 'Bold', and tab away. Two problems happen:
(1) The second property jumps up and ends up in the expanded font property.
(2) The '-' sign of the expanded font changes to a '+'.
The problem goes away by attaching ResfreshProperties(RefreshProperties.All) to the class. That's great, but I'd like to understand how it fixed the problem. I've had a look in reflector and can't find any examples of RefreshProperties being attached at the class level.

I have this code to select first node of TreeView. But when page loads the by default root node is other than first, I want to set the selected node as top most by default. Here is my code in page load but it's not working:
Dim nodes As TreeNodeCollection = TreeView1.Nodes
If nodes.Count > 0 Then
' Select the root node
TreeView1.SelectedNode = nodes(0)
End If
This gives the blue underline error on this line:TreeView1.SelectedNode = nodes(0)
The error is: "Selected Node Property is read Only"

What node property tells you if the node in question in a TreeView is the Root Node (i.e. highest parent level)? I want to be able to test a node (True/False) in a node event procedure.

I have a listview which I am trying to remove the initial root node's indent. My problem seems to be that I can't even set the indent value of the treeview in it's properties lower than 19, and if I try something like:
TreeView2.Indent = 16
16 seems to be the lowest value that makes any visual change.

I need Xpath of the "element" in above XML using VB.Net NameSpace Manager For the "body" node i have done and its working but i couldnt do the same to "element":
dim bodynode as XMLNode=XML.SelectSingleNode(//ns:body,nsmngr)
where "nsmngr" is the namespacemanger created by me and "ns" is the name space of the "parent node" (which the "body" node inherits) added to the namespace manager as "ns"

I'm saving potentially very large amounts of data to disk as a single serialized class. But there is a sub class that I would like to be able to retrieve and write back to the disk without having to read the entire file or write back the entire file. Trust me, my reasons for doing this are good, and the design behind this is more than correct.In VB6 this is very easily done. A single statement gets the portion of the data you want from the front of the file and saves it straight to the Type it belongs to, flawlessly. Likewise, if the dimensions of the data haven't changed, but only the values, then Put can be used to save it right back to the file without disturbing the integrity of the entire file.When needed, the entire file is read into a larger structure, and the entire file is put back, but only when necessary. Most of the time the only information being read from and written to the file are in the first few hundred kilobytes of the file.
Now that I've got serialization working, I'm trying to use it to read (deserialize) only the first member of the class serialized to disk. I haven't been able to find any examples of this anywhere that have lead me toward making the sort of progress I'm hoping for.So I suppose the first question is this: Is it possible to read only part of a serialized class from the open file stream? Specifically, in one case I want to read the first two integers stored in the class. In another case I want to read only the first block (sub class) from the open file stream. In both cases I do not want to read the entire file, but just what I'm interested in starting from block 0. I don't need to write back the integers to the first file, but I do need to write back the block to the second.Assuming that the answer to the above is yes. My second question would then be: How is this done? I want to work with the file stream already open rather than opening and closing file streams over and over.I

how can I achieve an interactive map. The map consists of zoom in/out, panning and also the most important the node which could be clicked. What I'm gonna do with the node is I'll apply to it the Dijkstra's Shortest Algorithm.
I can't think of a solution to this, how can I do it. I'm not asking for codes.

I'm trying to force an inherited class to use a custom attribute. I'm creating a class library where the user who wants to create an item will do so, but be forced to add an attribute (or visual studio will automatically add the default attribute) to their inherited class. Here is what I'm hoping to achieve:
BaseClass.vb:
<CustomAttribute(10)> _
Public Class BaseClass
End Class
MyClass.vb:

I think know how to do this in C# but I'm having syntax trouble in VB.NET because I need to take advantage of the 'handles' event stuff. I have different events that I somehow (probably delegate) need stored in a property of an attribute (I just add an attribute to a property linking to the corresponding event).
E.g.
<BindEvent(EventThing)>_
Public ReadOnly Property IsTrue() As Boolean
Get
Return True
End Get
End Property
They need to be events so that other programmers can use the VB.NET handles keyword on methods.
Public Delegate Sub TestEvent(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As Object)
Public Event E As TestEvent
Public Sub Test() Handles E
End Sub
These properties are already raising a general event, which I am catching, determining the related property and thus getting the related attribute (and delegate/event). I want to then raise the event that's related. If I just use a delegate tied to the particular event that won't raise other handlers will it? I also want to avoid having to write a sub for each property that just uses Raise Event on the event type if possible as this seems redundant.
E.g. avoid:
Public Event E As TestEvent
Public Sub CallE(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As Object)
RaiseEvent E(sender, e)
End Sub
[Code] .....
