Determine Absolute Path Of A File
Jun 21, 2010
I created a survey in vb.net where results are stored in an Excel file. Locally I can access and update the data of the file, but if I put online can not correctly access the excel file. How can I determine the absolute url of the file so, when a user submits the answers they can be inserted correctly in the excel file?Currently I use this to determine the location of the file: Dim LocalizacaoFicheiro As String = String.Concat(Server.MapPath("."), "RespostasQuestionario.xlsx")

I am looking for a way to determine whether a file spec that I provide is local or remote. I am using VB2008. I have a VB6 app that does this by using the PathIsNetworkPath API call, but I am hoping that I can use the .NET framework instead with VB2008. Google gives lots of results on how to determine if a network path is available, but not specifically what I want.

How do I determine a mapped drive's actual path?
So if I have a mapped drive on a machine called "Z" how can I using .NET determine the machine and path for the mapped folder?
The code can assume it's running on the machine with the mapped drive.
I looked at Path, Directory, FileInfo objects, but can't seem to find anything.
I also looked for existing questions, but could not find what I'm looking for.

I have a program that copies files to several servers in succession. If one of those servers is unavailable for any reason, my program hangs for about a minute before it continues on to the next server. Is there a quicker way to determine if the path is available or not?

I am trying to read and display a file using MapPath as follows :
Response.ContentType = "Application/pdf"
Dim FilePath As String = MapPath("../Document/123.pdf")
Response.WriteFile(FilePath)
Response.End()
This procedure will work fine and display in the browser. However, if I save the file to C:Document123.pdf, how can I access this file using relative path in MapPath function. Is there an option to access the file which is saved out of IIS server? I am using vb.net 2003.

I'm using acrobat that returns unix paths instead of windows path's. So im wondering if there is a way in vb.net to convert the path to windows path.
i tried using:
docs(i) = javaScriptObj.path().ToString.Replace("/", "").Substring(1)
position = docs(i).IndexOf("")
docs(i) = docs(i).Substring(0, position) + ":" + docs(i).Substring(position + 1)
this only works on local files, but fails when im starting to use network drives.

How do you get the absolute value of a number in vb.net?
Is there a function built in? I know I can simply code a function myself, but I want to know if there is one already there first. It seems so simple, I could probably make it in three lines, so I would be surprised if there isnt one....

I am trying to convert a web application from using hard-coded deployment locations (ie, /base/path/index.aspx) to discovering them at runtime. If I use Response.Redirect(), I can express the path as '~/index.aspx' and, at runtime, ASP.NET will build the correct URL to send the redirect to based on where the web application is deployed.
There are places in the code where Javascript and/or HTML is generated dynamically and sent to the client as part of the response to force a new window. In these cases, I don't know how to get the actual URL that should be opened in the new window. Using ~ doesn't work in this case since the URL is being evaluated by the browser and not the server. Is there a class or method in ASP.NET that will give me the URL I am looking for? I'd look myself, but I don't even know how to properly phrase my question.

When I'm coding in Visual Studio 2010, say that I have some interface:
Namespace Some.Huge.Terrible.Namespace.Adhering.To.Company.Standards
Public Interface MyInterface
...
Property SomeThing as String
...
End Interface
End Namespace
And a class:
Public Class CoolThings
Implements MyInterface
When I hit Enter after MyInterface, Visual Studio will put
Property SomeThing as String Implements Some.Huge.Terrible.Namespace.Adhering.To.Company.Standards.MyInterface.SomeThing
I would like it to, instead, simply put:
Property SomeThing as String Implements MyInterface.SomeThing
It does the same thing for all methods, etc. that I have to implement and it's mildly annoying to either have to look at a stupidly long reference, or clean it all up since I'm importing the namespace at the top of my class anyway. Is there a setting in Visual Studio that I can use to switch that?

I want to scan a directory and see what files are NOT bmp image files. As the file extension can lie I need to interrogate the file itself. I found some code here [url]...?ID=112 that does exactly this however it was written for VB5 and is 13 years out of date! I tried compiling it however VB 2010 baulked and I don't have the expertise to make it work.

When scanning a data file of this kind of form:
21/02/11 11:00:23, true, false
22/02/11 02:03:43 AM, true, false
22/03/11, false, false
2011-05-21T12:30:20, true, true
The 2nd and 3rd row are not important. How can you, by scanning a file, determine if a row comprises of dates, particularly when they have inconsistent formats? In the example above, for instance:
1) 1st line is date and time
2) 2nd line is date and time but also AM/PM
3) 3rd line is only date
4) 4th line is GMT format.
I'm not requesting code, but perhaps an algorithm or some guidelines on how to achieve this.
