I have a simple app that just shows the current time for specific locations around the world. I need to have it adjust for daylight savings time. I *THOUGHT* I'd already coded this but....
I thought I would use "Today.IsDaylightSavingTime()" and add 1 hour to the clocks. It isn't working?

Of course I can get the offset from GMT using the "z"/"zz" formatting option, but that doesn't tell me if DST is in effect for the current timezone or if the current timezone is in standard time...or if DST/Standard time aren't even an issue in the timezone for the system.

I have a string "2011-06-30 09:55 EDT" that uses the US daylight savings format. Date.Parse cannot convert this because this is a non-standard format (EDT instead of EST). Is there a way to convert this string using Parse?

View 10 RepliesI need to write some code to tell the user when daylight savings starts and ends in another timezone, this is what I came up with but it keeps selecting the last Else line. The other lines are working fine, the problem is only with the lines, daylight savings today and not tomorrow. There is probably a much neater way of doing this but I thought this would work.

I have noticed in a windows-based VB application I am working on when the "Automatically adjust clock for daylight saving changes" is de-selected, the time in the application is off by one hour. Is there anyway to make the application not sensitive to that and just display the date value that is retrieved from the database?
View 12 RepliesI'm faced with a (fun, actually) data mining problem; I have raw ASCII files from instruments, and I want to move that data (~400 GB) into a database, then be able to run various algorithms determining correlations of time series, etc. I would like to write the mining algorithms in Visual Basic (.net, VS 2010 right now), and be able to do visualizations with VB code I have in hand.On the nature of the data: think of a set of several thousand devices, each recording a measurement at a given interval - so I'm talking time-series vectors. It's not more complex than that - though I may have vectors with holes, etc. - not sure what problems of that sort lurk in the data.I spent today re-acquainting myself with VB.NET's interface to (in one case) a Microsoft Access database. What used to be fairly simple - DAO I think it was - involved tables, recordsets, etc (and that would likely be fine). Now I seem to be required to have a weird variety of generally useless objects, e.g. 'adapters', 'datasets', etc. The problem is that I know exactly what I need, and all this extraneous stuff just gets in the way (certainly in coding complexity and opaqueness, and likely in efficiency as well). If any of these mechanisms gave me a kind of virtual access to the entire dataset, and let me control caching parameters, etc.it might be great, but I found nothing along those lines. It seems like useless bloat, though I suppose it must be useful to someone.Anyway, I tried a number of different approaches, and none seemed at all aimed at what I need to do: efficiently do math on a large dataset. I can't believe I'm the first to have this problem, but I can find no useful wisdom out there. I'd be comfortable with pretty much any underlying database mechanism: MySQL, SQL Server, MS Access, but ideally something generally SQL based (I may eventually have to transition this entire system to draw from a client's SQL database, though that's not an overriding concern now). Other than that I want simplicity and efficiency. I thought my old ODBC techniques would work, and to some extent they do, though modifying tables seemed to have bizarre problems (no errors, but not modifications either).
I do have a fairly aggressive deadline to show some algorithm results, so my focus in the short term is to get something reasonable working *in* the short term - in other words, it's less important to me to pick the 'fastest' relational database than it is to pick a database that lets me focus on coding the algorithms, not working through tedious data access coding. If this db could be any smaller, I'd have tried to do it all 'in memory' at least for proving concepts; I don't want to have to learn an entire jargon and approach just to be able to retrieve data points.Perhaps I'll need to bite the bullet and just write something myself, a .dll perhaps just to save and restore large time series vectors. It seems a bit frightening to me that one would have to do this in this age, what with all the database systems out there, but I don't have much time to work through arcane interface logic.
I am attempting to determine every time a file is accessed, either opened, changed, deleted, created, or other various times such as a files is accessed like to be sent as an attachment in an email or something of that sort.

I'm using VB 2008 express edition.I have to show the growth of savings in a bank account using input from two text boxes that will be deposit amount and interest rate. I have attached a picture of my form.I have declared my variables and now I'm working on my processing.When the compute button is hit, based on the deposit amount and the interest rate, the amount of years it takes to double the money and the amount of years it takes to become a millionaire with that amount will be displayed in the lower text boxes.
Here's some of my math reasoning...
Doubling time formula : 2P = P(1+ i)^n I tried solving for ^n and got: n = logP(1 + i)/log2P

How do I express logarithms in VB?As for the amount of years that it takes to become a millionaire, can I simply take the deposit amount for example $500 dollars and divide 1,000,000 by 500 to get 2000 so it takes 2000 deposits of 500 dollars each to reach 1 million. This finds the OS version, but I don't seem to be able to determine the SP from it. What I need to do is make a piece of code that will find the OS and SP, and then download the latest SP.The service packs are as follows: 2000 needs SP4 and Rollup 1 and XP needs SP3. I value will need to be returned and then stored to create and IF statemenet, but I am stumped on how to find the SP.

I was just reading up on something and found online apps that can determine location/country from the ip so how would I determine the ip or look it up using the url? can I do this in .net?

My current situation is a brain teaser for me, and I wish I could provide code that I have tried but quite frankly - i have no idea how to even start. So this is my situation; I have a tab control, this tab control holds the names of Departments for a Lay-Away manager. The user has the option to click a static tab, "New.." and add a new department. When that happens, the new tab controls name is added to the settings, and a new list-view is created, and named "lst & DepartmentName". The problem is, I have no way of knowing when the Double_Click event of the this list that may, or may not exist happens. I have a method of determining which list is currently active, working with a timer to set a certain value the name of the list, sort of like

So far i have 2 labels and a progress bar. in the top level i have the name of what the progress bar is, and the second below the progress bar states the amount such as this "430GB/740GB". i also want the progress bar to state the percent of how full this drive is. how can i do the following:

View 3 RepliesI've got this problem where I'm supposed to be determining whether a string is a word or not. not exactly.Its supposed to just make sure each string has at least 1 vowel, and each vowel is surrounded by consonants. If it meets those requirements it'll be accepted, if not it'll be rejected, but I've already got that part figured out. I think I know a horrible way to do it, that would take a very long time, but I'm thinking there has to be a much easier way..

When trying to determine the Architecture of an OS, I ran across IntPtr.From reading the documentation, I saw this: Quote:The IntPtr type is designed to be an integer whose size is platform-specific. That is, an instance of this type is expected to be 32-bits on 32-bit hardware and operating systems, and 64-bits on 64-bit hardware and operating systems.
Since the size of IntPtr is intended to be the size of the architecture, would it be feasible to test the size and determine the OS by that? Or is there a better way?
I was thinking there might also be a way via WMI, but I don't want to use that for compatibility reason.

I'm trying to write some generic code in VB.NET that determines whether or not a SQL server database table contains an identity column and, if so, to return the name of that column.I'm working in Visual Basic 2008 Express and have created a SQL database, "MyDatabase" with 1 table called "MyTable". Within that table, I've got 3 columns, "ID", "Column1" and "Column2". I know, I know... inventive names. Under column properties in the Database Explorer, I've set the "ID" column "Identity Specification" to "yes" and have set the "Is Identity" value to "yes"
