Difference Between Express And Proffesional Edtion RE MySQL
Mar 22, 2009
I am looking using VB.NET 2008 with MySQL and I have a question regarding connectivity support for MySQL between the Express Version and Professional version. As far as I can tell you can connect to MySQL in Express version provided you have the .net connector for
MySQL and you have to code the connection and call it every time you want to use it. The IDE does not really support it. I want to be able to use Add Connection connect to MySQL via ODBC and then bind controls to it. For this do I need the professional version? What exactly are the differences between Express and Professional version with regards to MySQL?

I am looking to create an application that uses a remote mysql database, takes a picture from a live video stream, and also interfaces with an RS232 weighing scale. I'm just looking for a one or two sentence definition on what the huge differences are between VB Express and Standard.
I am a PHP developer and I have never worked with VB before (well maybe since high school 10 years ago). I am looking to either use vb or c++ to create this, but I have limited knowledge of any programming outside of web programming.

I am trying to connect my application to my database that's hosted on my website through another host. I am using the System.Data.SqlClient Namespace, and I have tried about every connection string possible, and I either get a long delay (About 30 seconds) before the main form displays with a warning in the Console box or it just gives me the warning and loads fast. Either way, it's not connecting.
code:
The x's represent just a masking. The server value is the ip address of my website. Basically, I am wanting this app to connect to my database of my website and it will be used to compare login information as well as the status of the logged in account (blacklisted, active, or needs to be activated).

I am trying to follow this userguide url... to basically build an application that will allow users to connect to my database, from an exe file. I'll try to explain as best i can. The plan is, users will launch an exe file that i have built in Visual Basic(VB) 2010 Express. When they launch the application they will see a 'login screen'.I am following the example guide (see link above), and will customise it once i can connect to the database. For some reason whenever i connect to the database it gives me two errors, the first is if i use the 'debug' mode in VB to test the script (note it doesn't produce any build errors), the second is if i build the application and run it as my users would.
1)Error Connecting to Database:Access denied for user 'mike'@'92.**.**.***' (using password:YES)
2)Error Connecting to Database:Unable to access any of the specified MySQL hosts..The ip address starred out (*) is my local machine ip address. The server is the server in which my Database runs on. 'mike' is a listed user on my 'user' table, the password i use is the password assigned to this user on my table.
3)I've rebuilt the whole VB project, but still no joy, wern't expecting it to as there were no errors generated.
4) I've read, but don't really understand that it could be something to do with my database not being able to be controlled remotely, only locally. I started digging into 'Access Your MySQL Server Remotely Over SSH', didn't really know if i was going completely off the mark, it didn't mention needing to do any of this in the guide i've been following, but just a thought. It might be the case as i've tried to access my database through a programme called MySQL Administrator. I punch in the host, username etc and connect to my database, for some reason it won't allow me to add new users, could this be because i can't control my database remotely? Would this stop what i'm trying to do working?
5) When trying to install the MySQL.Data.dll file i had great difficulty in choosing one and finding it, adding it to my project using the 'Add reference' in VB. Finnally got it how it should be (i think), installed MySQL.Data.dll Ver 6.1.2.0 into my project.

I downloaded the free Visual Basic Express Edition to create an application that connects to a Mysql database. I searched for the connection string and found a bunch of different ones.I have no idea which one should I use with Visual Basic Express Edition. I have been using PHP, javascript and mysql for a couple of years, but I have never used Visual Basic and have everything to learn.

I have been reading about ADO, SQL, datasets, data adapters etc and have gone into information overload. My next step is to create a simple data file of my own that I can manipulate, update, sort etc in VB Express. Do I need another piece of software? I read about MySQL, which I understand is primarily used to access databases on the net, but can that be used to create a simple local data file on my PC? Can you simply hard code something in VB Express?

I have determined thanks to the last q & a that there is something wrong with my "save to db" code as well as my "retrieve to picture" code. Even If I manually save the pic in the db it stil wont retreive. This is code i patched together from 3 or 4 examples around the net.

MySQL databases exists for saving values as strings (text only). Is there any way that i could store files with the same speed as a mysql command ? I know that it depends on the file size but lets say that the file is "Avatar.jpg" 50KB... I ve tried FTP but this is not what im looking for. e.g. You want your users been able to upload a file like the [Add This Attachment] button does in dreamincode.net and you dont have any background on PHP/HTML/Javascript/ASP.NET just VB.NET and the basics of MySQL plus you dont want to use it for a website. How do you accomplish this? Something silly that ive tried was opening an image as text then update the mysql server with that text but it didnt work backwards after i wrote the text on the file and oppened it ...it said that the image was corrupted.

What i have going on, is i have a MySQL connector as a resource on my application, and im basically trying to connect to my MySQL server, to either a) register a new account, or b) check that the account exists and they are premium, and login, Now what i have run into problems with is: My MySQL Database Name has a _ in it which VB is not allowing for some strange reason.
The code i am using is below
Imports MySql.Data.MySqlClient
Public Class Form1
Function UpdateRecord(ByVal query As String) As Integer
[CODE]...
How i can allow the _ into the application, because the only databases that don't have a _ in the user or dbname are a) Paid ones which i DO NOT have the money for or self hosted ones, i cannot leave my computer on 24/7

I have a query from within my vb.net code which searchs for a record by date. The date being entered via the code is in format dd/mm/yyyy, i need to search in the database using yyyy/mm/dd? Ideally i thought there may just be a function within MySQL which will convert this. If not in vb.net to convert the string 01/01/2011 to 2011/01/01?

I'm just using the default SQL Server Express in my vb 2008 express edition as my database server for my database operation. I tried to start using VB 2010 Express with a program I originally developed with VB 2005 Express that I moved to VB 2008 Express successfully a couple years ago. It uses a database file (*.mdf) that is on the computer ( not out on a server). When attempt to run the program in debug mode, I get the following error "An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:Documents and SettingsTomMy DocumentsQuizzing StuffQuestion Database 2010QuizQuest ionGameQuizQuestionGameinReleaseQuizQuestionDB.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share."
I first made a copy of the entire project folder that was working in VB 2008 Express and gave it a different name. In VB2010 I opened the project in the copied folder and it said it successfully converted the project. I am able to open the Data Source inthe Designer and see the database structure as I expect. I think the project is still using SQL Server 2005 Express (because it is what is checked in the list of prerequisites on the Publish tab).
Note, I have programmed off and on for many years, but fairly new to using databases and SQL Server.

Here is the scoop: I am trying to make a user account SQL database work with Visual Basic 2008 Express for login purposes, i.e. usernames & passwords. Plan is to host this server so people can login to use the the application and verify they have a valid account. I would like to host all the account information in SQL due to the possiblity of hundreds of users at any given time. I also need the ability to add data to the database for users registering for the first time. The SQL server will need to be able to access the SQL Server databases remote via WAN.

I am trying to re write a VB6 program using MS Access, many years ago, using VB 2010 express and SQL server 2008 R2 Express. I have a database with several tables, which I created using the designer. I am able to connect to the database and select data and display it in textboxes etc in vb code. What I have not been able to in code is to INSERT rows DELETE rows or UPDATE any data in the tables. I can do any of these operations using the Query Designer, but I want to do it in code. I can post some code if necessiary, but I thought it might just be some property that I had not set in the designer.
