Display Of Datagrid Column: Can't Get It To Handle Carriage Returns

Sep 3, 2009

I am using Visual Studio 2005 and .NET 2.0 to display data pulled from a Oracle table. I am trying to display a notes column, but the column is not displaying the CRLF characters properly. The text is showing as a single line.

Private Sub BindNotesGrid()

Dim colCreatedBy As New BoundColumn()
Dim colCreatedDate As New BoundColumn()

Adding Carriage Returns To XML File?

Sep 16, 2010

I'm working on a program that stores some of its configuration information in an XML file. I'm able to read and write the xml files ok and everything works, but I would like to be able to open the xml files in other programs such as programmer's notepad. When I open the xml file in programmer's notepad, all the text is on a single line. Is there a way to embed carriage returns into the xml file?

Array Of Strings Contains Carriage Returns That Can't Be Found

May 9, 2012

I have used StreamReader to read the contents of a file to its end, and parsed each line into an array entry for an array of strings. That part works, and I have verified that each array entry does contain the proper line entry from the file. However, if I were to go and print out (say, in a MsgBox) each line, every line after the first one would look like (Carriage Return)(proper thing), yet searching for the CRs using InStr yields that there is no CR or ControlChars.NewLine etc. character in the string. I'll show you my code:

Dim FileParse(255) as string
Public Function FileRead(ByVal FILENAME As String)
Dim sr As New System.IO.StreamReader(System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory & FILENAME)
Dim FileData As String = sr.ReadToEnd

[code]....

I just set the For Loop from 0 to 10 because I am unsure how to tell the loop to end when it has finished with the last entry of the Lines() array, and since the program will later be writing to the source file, it is likely that the number of lines will change (which is why I just arbitrarily set the FileParse array to have 256 spots).

Windows - WM_GETICON Sometimes Returns No Icon Handle

Apr 4, 2011

I'm trying to show all window titles including the corresponding icons, much like Windows Task Manager does. This works only to a certain extent though - although I am able to get the windows' title bar texts, the icon is not always available.

For getting the icon I pass the WM_GETICON message to SendMessage (source):

Public Const WM_GETICON As UInteger = &H7F
Public Function GetWindowIcon(ByVal WindowHandle As IntPtr) As Icon
Dim IconHandle As IntPtr = SendMessage(WindowHandle, WM_GETICON, 0, 0)

[Code].....

For some windows, this returns just the correct icon. For others, it returns Nothing since IconHandle is equal to 0. In Windows Task Manager and on the taskbar they show up just fine.

I get an empty string when calling the .Text property. Refer below for snippet:[code]The internet search advises to use Items(col).Cells(2).FindControl(..), the problem with that is FindControl finds the control by ID, BoundColumn doesn't allow you to insert an ID for it.

Datagridview - Sort Datagrid View Column With Numbers And Texts On Column Header Click?

Feb 13, 2012

It seems that on clicking datagridview column header, the column will be automatically sorted based on the column type. I have a column showing some numbers. If column type is string, it sorts "1","20","3" into "1","20","3". If column type is double, it sorts into "1","3","20" which is the result that I want. However, there might be some erros in the numbers and error messages(text) will show in the cell instead of numbers. So I cannot set the column type as double. I want to ignore these error messages and sort all the numbers. How can I do this?

Also, I need to add some background colors to different rows in datagridview. So in the column header click event, I call the bkgColor Sub to achieve this. My question is that how can I override the sorting method in this event?

Dynamic DataGrid - Dynamically "transform" DataGrid To Display The Selected Search Template

May 23, 2011

I have a search form on that will be pulling search template queries from a table in the underlying (an Access db on a share). The search form has a calendar control for filtering by date range, a listbox containing the names of the search templates, a second listbox which lists the fields in the selected template, and then some controls which show/hide themselves depending on which field is selected so that the user can pick a field and enter it's unique criteria in the appropriate control for filtering. Below these controls is a DataGrid, which will obviously display the results.

The problem is how to dynamically "transform" this DataGrid to display the selected search template. These templates do not represent tables in the underlying; rather they represent preconstructed SQL queries (stored in a table) which are essentially SELECT queries with joins and no WHERE clause (so they are the results of multiple tables joined together by their keys).

To be honest, I'm having trouble even generating the LINQ queries to represent these template dynamically, but that's not as important, since I can manually translate the SQL queries into LINQ. This is definitely not the preferred method, as the whole point of putting these templates in a table, rather than code, was to allow for future additions without rebuilding/redistributing the application interface.

ASP.NET MVC - Linq Query With Count Returns Anonymous Type - How To Display In View

So I'm writing a query as follows:

In the controller I can return the data easily as follows:

For Each c In assSummary
MsgBox(c.Description & " " & c.AssCount)
Next

If I pass the object through to the view using Viewdata("assSummary") = assSummary, how do I display the data? Every method I've tried results in messages about 'VB$AnonymousType_7(Of Integer,String) and I don't know how to retrieve the data from the anonymous type.

Handle Different Display Font Sizes?

Nov 4, 2011

I have a basic VB.net app that displays a picture box with some text. nothing special. looks fine on my computer. If I display it on someone else's computer with a larger font size (125%?) my picturebox and text looks off and stupid.

How do people account for this? Should I simply get the new font size and multiple all positions, lengths and widths of object by 1.25?

I'd obviously like my dialog to scale properly and look as expected in any display no matter what font size is selected.

Display Control In .NET That Can Handle Color Codes?

Jun 12, 2011

It seems the only options available to do multi-color on a string is either a bunch of label controls cleverly grouped together or to use a RichTextBox and play with the font properties as text is added to the control.

What I am looking for instead is some kind of control that can render some style of control codes out as color. Consider bash codes:

NORMAL='e[0m'
GREEN='e[0;32m'
BLUE='e[0;34m'
echo -e "This text is ${GREEN}green${NORMAL} and this text is ${BLUE}blue${NORMAL}"

In the above, the words 'green' and 'blue' will be colorized with their respective colors. I was wondering if there was a control with some kind of feature like this, or will I have to code something myself?

Note, I only have the Express copy of VB 2010, and I would very much like to avoid third-party controls.
