i am new to working with databases, I have done some of my own research and have been adding and regtrieving records without trouble. Now I need to retrieve a specific record based on a selection made by the user. I found that the way to do it is with the WHERE statement and from examples i have seen the code below should be how it is done:[code]The problem I am having is that when i try to run the sub i get the error:Syntax error (missing operator) in query expression 'Show Name = Strictly Hip Hop'.The show name is in the database because that is where the data is retrieved from. All I am trying to do is populate a text box with information from the Host column when the Show Name column is the same as the selected item in the combo box.

I am trying out the Visual Studio 2008 Standard Edition Setup and Deployment - Setup Wizard on a very simple VB 2008 app which includes a simple SQL Express dB. The build works fine and it installs on the target system ok. But when I go to run the application and add a new record for example, I get a "read-only" error indicating that the sql db is read-only. Yet none of the files in the folder are read-only. What is odd is that the folder that it was installed into "acts" like it is read only, yet it is not identified as such. If I move the .exe and db files out of that folder, (onto the desktop for example) it works just fine. Should I set up a post build event or something to make

My ConnectionString is working fine.
I've saved my SQL command in a string as follows: Dim sqlcmd As String = "select LEFT(eventDate,10) from Locations"
Dim sqlreader As SqlDataReader
Then I open my connection and at that point everything is fine.
I can execute the query just fine but the error comes up when I try to fill data into my webapp.
sqlreader.Read()
loc1Date.Text = sqlreader("eventDate").ToString() ---------- This is the line that is giving me the error "System.IndexOutOfRangeException: eventDate"
I just want the date pulled and not the time. get this date to fill into my textbox on my webapp.

SQL Server : SQL Express 2008 R2
VB 2010 Express
SQL Server is located on the workstation so the code and the DB are on the same PC
Created a DB connection using the wizard. Tried this with Windows authentication and SQL authentication using sa
Created a Dataset and dragged the grid onto the form1.vb.
In SQL Sertver Management Studio I can update update tables using the same credentials as in the VB connection string
WHen I try to update a record in the VB Dataset it returns the error cannot update database because it is read-only
I have checked the files and folder attributes in SQL Data folder. Nothing is set to read only
I have checked SQL Server Database > Properties > Option > State > Databse Read only = false
I don't what I'm doing wrong here but I cannot get VB to update data via the dataset.
Inotice in SQL Server that the DBname now includes the full path "C:PROGRAM FILESMICROSOFT SQL SERVERMSSQL10_50.SQLEXPRESSMSSQLDATAPAYABLES.MDF" and not just the DB name. Is this becuase VB Express requires you to point to the physical DB file?

I recently upgraded the MS SQL Server installed on my personal computer from 2005 Express to 2008 Express. Problem is when I try to add an SQL database file to a project using VS 2005 I get an error message saying that the version of my database server is not supported, I must have SQL Server 2005 Beta 2 or later installed. I didn't do it yet but I'm pretty sure that when I open the other projects that I included a database file to it, I'm going to get the same error.
My question is it possible to have two SQL Servers installed on my machine? If so, is it a good idea to have two DB servers in the same machine?

Even if I create a new one from scratch. How can one project open database files without error, but the new one I made can't?This is the code I have for both of them.

I've created a project in VB .NET. when i build it and run the .exe everything works fine but when i install it the database becomes read only. I've used the VB 'setup and deployment' project to make and installer and i also tried InstallShield but the occurs in both cases. i looked on google but can't find anything that makes sense atleast. i think the application can not create _log.LDF file. Anyone come across this problem before?
error: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Failed to update database "C:........." because the database is read-only.

I have created extension method which operates items in IEnumerable(Of T). .NET Framework 4.0 has new method File.ReadLines which returns IEnumerable(Of String). I got two implicitly typedvariables which operate on lines returned by File.Readlines.The first iteration goes OK, but when second iteration starts, program stops ancompiler goes to my extension method and points to ProcessFunction(item) with the following: "Cannot read from a closed TextReader".If I change data to data.ToList, then no error occurs. What can be wrong?
Here's code:
Module Program
Delegate Sub ProcessFunc(Of T)(ByVal item As T)

I am doing a regular update table scan
Using connect1 As New MySqlConnection(ConnectLocalhost.serverString)
connect1.Open()
Dim cmd = New MySqlCommand("set net_write_timeout=99999; set net_read_timeout=99999", connect1) ' // Setting tiimeout on mysqlServer
[Code].....
All I want is for the program to just "continue" when this thing happen. But that seems to be impossible. So I guess I need a way to make sure this bug doesn't happen. It happens randomly eery 800 entries or so.
Looks to me the connection is forcibly closed by remote host. In that case, I simply want to go where things left on and restart again.

I'm not really sure how to word it, if it is possible, but part of my program reads from a text file. It then pulls out the necessary information needed from that file by finding key identifiers. Right now the code is written to find the first key identifier and then read each line after that, locating each subsequent identifier and pulling the data from it. In a few cases, the format examples I've worked with are a bit different which results in a runtime error. How can I tell the program to essentially skip that part of the text file if it's not reading it right and continue moving on? Here is somewhat of an example of the text file.
DID/"DATA EXTRACTED HERE"
NAM/"DATA EXTRACTED HERE"
STR/"DATA EXTRACTED HERE"

I have a somewhat weird problem with a program i'am writing in VB2005. When I debug the program and start 1 backgroundworker (got 8 different backgroundworkers in the program) in VB2005 nothing goes wrong, but when i'm starting 2 or more backgroundworkers I get an NullReferenceException when trying to read from a MySQL database (withing a few minutes in debugging). This error isn't always in the same backgroundworker, but is always in the same block of code in a backgroundworker (1 of 8). I tried different approaches in getting the results I need, for example with read1.HasRows(), but this also didn't workt... the MySQL table doesn't also seem to be the problem.
Line 8 is where I get the error (read1.Read())... This is a snippet from backgroundworker1, but is also randomly happens in the other 8 backgroundworkers as well... When I'am trying to read te content of read1 is says "Nothing" when the error occures...

I am trying to read a single result from an SQL table. I tested my query in MySQL Query Browser and it returns a result of USER_ID=4. My query:
SELECT USER_ID FROM aaalogin where NAME = 'administrator'
I believe my error is due to some "double quoting". I have a "txtUsername" textbox on my login form. I want to inject the typed entry from this textbox into my SQL QUERY. Notice the end of this line, I have tried tons of combinations, nothing works.
myCommand.CommandText = "SELECT USER_ID FROM aaalogin where NAME = " & " ' txtUsername.Text ' "
The result is ALWAYS "0" though, which is useless to me.
Full code below:
Imports MySql.Data.MySqlClient
Imports System.Data
Public Class frmLogin
Private Sub cmdCancel_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles cmdCancel.Click
Application.Exit()
[Code] .....

I have a series of .DAT files I need to read into vb.net and then parse the data into a format that can be easily read into an SQL database that already exists. Would I be using a StreamReader object? Or is there a different way to go about this?
