ErrorProvider Not Working Consistently From DataSet.ColumnChanging?
Feb 13, 2012
I have an ErrorProvider on a form with a DataGridView.The Binding Source for the DGV points at a single table in the DataSet (which hooks up to an underlying Access DB).The table has two columns:
1) Autoincrement PK
2) Text field, <=25 chars, unique, can't be Null or empty string
I test for string length (>0 and <=25) in the DataSet.Table.RowChanging event.If it's out of range then I use e.Row.SetColumnError, that passes the error to the ErrorProvider / DGV on the correct row and DataSet.HasErrors returns True. All good, no problems.
I test for uniqueness in the DataSet.Table.ColumnChanging event.If it's not unique I can set the error with either e.Row.SetColumnError or e.Row.RowError; Now it gets complicated since sometime this makes the ErrorProvider / DGV show the error and sometimes not, it depends on whether the DataSet keeps the Unique = True constraint of the underlying DB.
Why would I have the DataSet be False for Unique when the DB is True for same constraint? So that the user interaction with the form has the minimum of dialogue box based interuptions. I am trying to design a system whereby all issues / errors are reported
to the user as they interact with the form in a subtle way, allowing them to keep working but trapping errors before any attempt to Save from the DataSet to the DB.
So, if the DataSet keeps the unique constraint then when you insert the new (duplicate) row the DGV throws its DataError event, a default dialogue appears, behind which the DGV has the ErrorProvider icon on the correct row. However, since the DataError event
causes the problematic change to be rolled back, the new row is removed and the error disappears.
If I change the DataSet requirement to Unique = False, then SetColumnError does not cause an ErrorProvider icon to be shown and DataSet.HasErrors returns False. I can improve upon this slightly by using RowError, this causes DataSet.HasErrors to return True but the ErrorProvider icon still does not show.Further, when using Unique = True on the DataSet, and editing an existing row to be a duplicate of another, the behaviour is the same, DGV.DataError event, roll back of the change but the ErrorProvider icon remains, despite the row no longer being a duplicate and DataSet.HasErrors returns True. The text of the the ErrorProvider tooltip is the one from SetColumnError, not RowError.So, the behaviour of SetColumnError is affected by the state of the DataSet field Unique constraint?
Unique = True
SetColumnError affects the DGV / ErrorProvider and DataSet as expected.
(RowError behaviour unknown)
Unique = False
I have code running in the Datatable.ColumnChanging event in my dataset. This dataset underlies a form and conventional drag/drop controls are in place for data entry.when the event triggers and runs, I am running code in the form that checks the dataset.HasChanges property. It is showing False. But this is immediately after the ColumnChanging event has been triggered.Okay, I see by others posts and MSDN that .HasChanges will only be true after moving off the row with the changed column. I have also noted lots of discussion about the advanced binding property of DataSourceUpdate Mode, but that does not address this issue.I guess I can do this by checking the state of the row for the binding source. Just seems odd that the event behind the dataset can be triggered and that does not change the dataset.HasChanges property.
I am trying to write a program to download an image at certain time intervals from a website based on a start time, end time and the time interval. I am trying to use 3 timers to accomplish this. I want to be able to kick the program off and leave it running until I stop it. My code seems to work fine if I set the time interval for something like 2 minutes, etc. and sit and watch it, but if I set it for an hour and leave it alone, it gives me almost sporadic results.
I set it to start at 10 pm last night and end at 5 am this morning with an interval of 1 hour. It downloaded an image at 10 pm, 11 pm, 12 am, 1 am, 2 am, and 3 am and then there were no images for 4 and 5 am. I have tried this multiple times with different time spans, and seem to get sporadic results. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Here is my current code:
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click If TextBox1.Text.Length = 0 Or cmbStartTime.Text.Length = 0 Or cmbEndTime.Text.Length = 0 Or TextBox2.Text.Length = 0 Then MsgBox("You must select an image destination, start time and time increment.") Else
how the various elements that help you handle errors work together. Have tried several options and can't make head nor tail of it. The underlying table has two columns, an autoincrement integer and a text column with the following settings:
I cannot seem to open a new window in WPF consistantly. It will work one time, and then the next time I execute the same script, it throws the following exception: XAMLParseException occured 'Provide value on 'System.Windows.Baml2006.TypeConverterMarkupExtension' threw an exception.' Line number '4' and line position '208'. {Cannot evaluate expression because the code of the current method is optimized.}
Here is the script: Dim Window As Window = New GAME_WINDOW Window.Show() Yes, "GAME_WINDOW" is a legitimate WPF window. Here are the first four lines of XAML code for the window I'm trying to open: <Window x:Class="GAME_WINDOW" xmlns="[URL]" xmlns:x="[URL]" Title="Operation SpyRat: Word4Word" Icon="/VBP-WORD4WORD;component/alicia.ico" WindowState="Maximized" Background="Black" xmlns:my="clr-namespace:VBP_WORD4WORD">
I have a timer control that sends data to a hardware every 3 seconds. I sent 6 bytes of data. In return I am expecting 8 bytes of data in DataReceived event. First time I send 6 bytes of date, in DataReceived event, I get the expected 8 bytes. Then in next 3 seconds, again the expected 8 bytes of data is received. But after that I find that DataReceived is fired 2 times: first time I get 6 bytes and then I get 2 bytes. After that I again get 8 bytes as expected. So in short, 2 times I get 8 bytes as expected and 6 bytes and 2 bytes and again 8 bytes. This pattern is repeating continuously. Why? Is there any reason why I cannot get all 8 bytes everytime? Note that the code is in vb.net 2008
Code in button btn_Start () 'Set serial port parameters x.PortName = "COM1"
What is the best practice while working with dataset amd datatable.Actually I have seen that very few information is online when it comes to working with multiple base table.Suppose there is one master table and a details table. The need of MASTER table is suppose just one column (say ProductName), while the application mainly works with the DETAILS table.My idea, we use JOIN to create a single datatable and work with it. But am surprised how little information is available when it comes to working with Multiple Base Table and the limitation of SQLCOmmandBuilder in such situation.
I have some problem with working with tables which were created on previous form. Say we have a form Customers in which Customers are displayed in datagridview.Now to create or add ne customer to this customer table on sql server, another form is opened.In this form user enters all data like customer name, phone number etc. when changes are made to the sql server using a stored procedure this form is closed now I want to show this newly added customer in the datagridview of the previous form.Right now what I am doing is creating data set and command et. and again fetching data for all customers from sql server.
Anyway, I wrote a view with a union query in SQL Server that grabs data from a linked SQL server.
Anytime I try to add this object as a dataset in VB.NET it completely bombs out on me with this ugly error message...
ERROR [42000] [Microsoft] [ODBC SQL Server Driver] [SQL Server] The operation could not be performed because the OLE DB Provider 'SQLOLEDB' was unable to begin a distributed transaction. ERROR [01000] [Microsoft] [ODBC SQL Server Driver] [SQL Server] [OLE/DB provider returned message : new transaction cannot enlist in the specified transaction coordinator] ERROR [01000] [Microsoft] [ODBC SQL Server Driver] [SQL Server] OLE DB Error Trace [OLE/DB Provider 'SQLOLEDB' lTransactionJoin::JoinTransaction returned 0x8004d00a]
I'm completely stumped as to why I can't create a dataset from a view that references a linked SQL server. It's not this specific view either, all views that reference this linked server bomb out.
I'm having troubles with my errorprovider and i already found out what the problem is - the textbox is bounded twice (Display Member and Value have different binding sources) and so the errorprovider is showing the same error twice. If i remove one binding source,everything is fine.Any suggestions?Oh - I'm validating the columns in my DataSet.vb with DataTable_ColumnChanged Sub with table.setColumnError().Another problem ->I have a field (decimal) in my dataset that is optional (can be null). But if the user writes something in and then deletes it so that the textbox is empty, the errorprovider is showing the error "Input string was not in a correct format."
I have put my business logic in a partial class as suggested in best practices. One of the conditions is that one of four fields of a row has have a value. Setting the errorprovider has no problems when creating a new row in the new row event. All the textboxes in the form show the error condition.
Dim ErrorString As String = "A value is needed for at least one of the " & vbCrLf & "Gallon, Fuel, Oil, or Misc fields"
The logic that sets them back to a no error condition though only sets the currently focused control in the form to no error. When the error is corrected.
I'm having an issue with getting the errorprovider to work in a database application where I have put the error provider logic in a partial class and have a combobox value change.Either I set the bindings so that it works but any navigation in the binding navigator then updates the value of that combobox on every next previous etc or it never fires until the save. So there is no way to change the errorprovider setcolumnerror string to something new with out saving on every navigation move. After changing the selection in the combobox the row does shows dirty (rowstatus) so there is databinding but it doesn't fire the ColumnChanged event like textbox and other controls. Is there a way to keep all this in the business logic in a partial class?
Partial Class reportexecDataSet Partial Class fuellogDataTable Private Sub fuellogDataTable_ColumnChanged(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As
I'm using the ErrorProvider in VB.Net (2005) which is associated with a BindingSource that is bound to a custom object that I have created. This custom object contains a date field that has a "Date" data type that. I am using a "TextBox" to bind the date field in my form. My issue is, whenever the TextBox loses focus and is blank, "String not recognized as a valid DateTime" is displayed by the ErrorProvider and the focus can't be changed to any other control on the Form. It's good that the ErrorProvider validates entries on Date fields by default (I didn't set up my custom object to display this particular error for the date), but it should allow blank values. I want the user to be able to have a blank date with no error message displayed. How can this be done using a Date field bound to a TextBox?
Is there any way to turn the damned error provider off when i try to close the form using the windows close button(X). It fires the validation and the user has to fill all the fields before he can close the form..this will be a usability issue because many tend to close the form using the (X) button. i have placed a button for cancel with causes validation to false and it also fires a validation.
We would like to have 2 ErrorProviders for a DataGridView. The standard ErrorProvider and another WarningProvider with a different icon. Also is it possible to Left Justify the standard ErrorProvider icon in specific DataGridView cells?
I've got lots of textboxes and such bound to a BINDING SOURCE - the datasource of the CASEFILEBS is set like this:

Seems "data saving" is not always being consistently done - sometimes a field change never makes it into the underlying datatable - sometimes certain field changes never make it to the DB. I believe I'm doing something fundamentally wrong that when fixed will clear up some of these issues.
When the user clicks an "Edit" button on my form, I want a box to come up which allows the user to edit a DataTable in a strongly-typed DataSet. What's the best way to do this?
I have tried everything I can to get beyond this error which shows below as <<<<< error here. It is trying to fill a dataset from a data adapter. If I change the SELECT statement to just SELECT * FROM xTable I get the correct number of records in each table. But anytime I try with a more complex statement I get the error message shown below which indicates System.Data.Common.DbDataAdapter.Fill(DataSet dataSet. I've completely erased all data and entered a new set of test data so I know there is no problem with relationships. Each table has primary key which is foreign key in other table. IS there something wrong with the Imports section: Imports System
i am trying to copy data from a standard Dataset to a Type Dataset (XSD) of same table structure. i want to use Automapper to do that one. So how can i do that using automapper?
I have two Datagrids, One grid has all the customers garments on it with style number and contact length. The other grid has the users who have garment issued to them. the style number is in both grids. I need to loop through the users grid and say if the contract number is 1 from the first grid then the contract date on the second grid will be todays date + 365 days (year contract) I have looked at using a stored procedure and also a for each command but I am just getting stuck with it all. [Code]
I have a problem saving a dataset which contains rows that i have imported from another dataset. i can successfully view the imported rows in a gridview but i cannot commit the rows back to the database.
I have multiple datasets that I would like to combine into one. There is a common ID field that can be associated to each row. Calling Merge on the dataset will add additional rows to the dataset, but I would like to combine the additional columns. There are too many fields to do this in one query and therefore would make it unmanageable. Each individual query would be able to handle ordering to ensure the data is placed in the correct row.
For Example lets say I have two queries resulting in two datasets:
ok, I've finally got my test database issues sorted out, however now I need to actually modify my existing report to add the two new fields from my test database. I have made a copy of the report so that I am not modifying the original. I have deleted the two old fields and now want to add my two new fields in there. In the Field explorer window, I see an object called "dataset1" and when I expand it, it is using a view that includes fields from the table that I added my two new fields to.
The problem I see here is that I have gone in and modified the view to include these two new fields in my test database - but again, they are not showing up as selectable fields here. I am just assuming that "dataset1" is somehow pointing to the live database again and that I need to change the datasource location.In my solution explorer, I see an object called "dataset1.xsd" but the properties of that do not tell me much about where it is actually pointing to...
