View 3 RepliesIt is possible to catch an exception and throw a new exception which wraps the first exception as an inner exception: [URL] Also, if I call a function and it throws a certain error, but I catch it, will the calling code's catch handler execute? If so, and it is of a higher exception type, is this not wrapping the exception? eg I can throw exception ex of type IndexOutOfRange, log it but rethrow, catch a higher up exception and do something, or I can throw a new exception and wrap an inner exception like:
View 1 RepliesI've spent a substantial amount of time trying to figure this out, but I keep getting the same error
A first chance exception of type 'System.Data.OleDb.OleDbException' occurred in System.Data.dll
A first chance exception of type 'System.NullReferenceException' occurred in project1.exe
This happens when I try to use the DataReader.my code is
Public Function Identification() As List(Of Integer)
Dim returnIndex As New List(Of Integer)
Dim dbCount As String = "SELECT Bookingid FROM bookdetail WHERE Date =" & getCurrentTimeString() & " 12:00:00 a.m."
Dim count As Integer = 0

i need to clear this error

I am just trying to get the system to open a database and I get this error:
A first chance exception of type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException' occurred in System.Data.dll
here's the entire code of the main form
=======================================
Imports System
Imports System.Data
Imports System.Data.SqlClient
[code]....
the error is generated at the open method note* this same code works fine in another computer, the main difference is that this one has a 64 bit OS.
Why i'm getting this exception when trying to update a data view?
View 14 RepliesI am working with serial port communications. I have very fast and continuous data on my serial port. I have a program to read data from serial port. I have comport.Datareceived event in my program to receive data. Now, the problem is there is data going every 100ms to comport. Will my comport.DataReceived event will receive also with that fast? Now,let's say there is data on comport and if I don't read it what happens to the data? The problem I'm facing is my dataReceived event is getting very slow after some time.If I stop sending data to my com, still my datareceiving program is receiving. That means it is not as fast as sending data.If I keep sending data from 4 to 5 days and coz my datareceived event is not that fast as sending, I am getting data very slowly and some times I am getting MemoryOutofRange Exception.
View 1 RepliesIs there an easy way for me to capture some system data when I except? Particular memory information. I have a service that has been running fine for years, but lately it keeps having System.OutOfMemory exceptions being thrown at random. I want to determine what memory the system is actually using then if possible to see if I am really out of memory.

i'm using a strongly-typed dataset and i created a table adapter with a query and i previewed the data and it works fine but when i run the application it can't fill the table with this query and it throws an exception that it violates a constraint orkeyFailed to enable constraints. View 1 RepliesI'm trying to handle DBNull exception while reading data from database. It's my code:
...
Dim SQLRDAs SqlDataReader

val1= GetStringFromDB(Trim(SQLRD("Name")))
val2= GetStringFromDB(Trim(SQLRD("Level")))

But still I get Conversion from type 'DBNull' to type 'String' is not valid. error.
What is going on with my code. To .NET and handling SQL connections. I am trying to catch an error where lets say someone puts in something that violates the rules of the field (i.e. they put data in a field that doesn't matched what is on the other table.) Please find teh code I ahve put on the save button to try to catch the error. Instead of popping a message box up the program just closes itself.

I'm binding a ComboBox's SelectedIndex to a Nullable database field like so:
VB.NET
ColapsoComboBox.DataBindings.Add("SelectedIndex", EnsaiosBindingSource, "Colapso", False, DataSourceUpdateMode.OnValidation, 0)
As you can see, I've defined the NullValue to be zero, yet I get an InvalidCastException. Is there anything I'm doing wrong? Or is handling the binding's Format and Parse events the only way around this?
Do While rdr2.Read()
Dim var1 As String = rdr2.Item("Week").ToString
Dim var2 As String = rdr2.Item("L1").ToString
Dim var3 As String = rdr2.Item("L2").ToString
It generates the following error: A first chance exception of type 'System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeException' occurred in System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll
Interestingly, if I use a numeric value for the variable it for LSArraytemp, it writes to the database no problem at all.
I need to consume data from a webservice. I am receiving xml data and using this to create objects through property setters.
In one particular case, an attribute of the object (called "is_active" and indicates whether the object is active or inactive in the application) is represented sometimes by
<field type="BooleanField" name="is_active">1</field>
and at other times by <field type="BooleanField" name="is_active">True</field>
The client code requires me to represent this using integers 1 and 0. The returned string "True" or "False" results in System.FormatException, as expected.
What is the most graceful way to deal with this situation?
Is there something wrong with my connection string that I would get this exception thrown back at me from my code? I have the string saved in the code and when I try to create an SqlConnection I get the exception above thrown and below is my connection string which is actually the address to my DB file.
Connection = "Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename= C:Documents and SettingsTTTMy DocumentsBASEO.mdf;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True"

MS has a patch for the OnListChanged event handler issue, even though it seems we have to pay to have access to it. This fix specifically addresses an error message when you press ESC to cancel adding a new row in .NET 2.0: [URL]

On my Developement server when I am running my application, then there is one function where I am trying to put whole stringbuilder contents in a string object. This Function is used for paging the reports.For that I am using a method of Stringbuilder.tostring() and when I chek the value of this statement (stringbuilder.tostring()) it shows no such interface is supported, which later on throws exception of system is out of memory. Here i am using .net 2.0 framework and sql server 2005 database.But when I run the application on stagging server then there is no such exception thrown.[code]
View 3 RepliesI have a large project where we have 2-3 dll projects that are converted from VB6 to VB.NET. We have fixed all the issues that caused compilation errors, and most of obvious issues in running, so now we have basically a program up and running. The exe is created from scratch in VB.NET, using a lot of functionality from the converted dll's (including GUI forms). What I wonder is when I run the program in debug mode, I get a bunch of warnings in the "Immediate Window" saying:
A first chance exception of type 'System.Exception' occurred in Microsoft.VisualBasic.dll
...and some of other type (but most of them in Microsoft.VisualBasic.dll).I was wondering if this is common in projects converted from VB6, or if it is caused by bad design in our code...

View 4 RepliesI'm trying to catch a user defined permission exception - i.e. a user does something their level of system access won't allow, permission exception is thrown. My problem is, the exception is caught and then rethrown as a genertic System.Exception.Is there any way I can deduce the original exception type, without resorting to string comparisons, like if ex.ToString.Contains("Permission denied"
View 2 RepliesWhen catching an exception in .net, you can have as many type-specific exception blocks as needed. But I usually try to have at least one "general" exception catch block. But is there a way to get the type of the "real" exception thrown that is caught by the generic exception handler, perhaps using reflection?For example, if I have
Catch ex As System.ServiceModel.FaultException(Of InvalidUser)
ProcessModuleLoadException(Me, ex)
Catch ex As System.ServiceModel.FaultException(Of SQLExceptions)
[code].....
i have about 20 possible exception messages that i want thrown when an error occurs.i need somthng like this when catching the exception
Try
' do domthing
Catch ex As CustomInvalidArgumentException
'do domthing

do i have to create a class that inherits from Exception for each type of exception?
I have the following code :

Private Sub getData()
Dim connStr As String = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=C:
