I'm currently developing an app which essentially needs a way for me to search in a text box or file for a specific string, and extract the line on which that string appears on. It will be unique, and the syntax is the same on each line. It has basically 2 ID numbers, and is laid out like this:
123456|123456
So, I'd need to search for the first part before the |, and then get the line so I can get the bit after the |, which is the important bit for me.
When the user clicks the Process Files button, do the following:
Read and process the contents of each of the 6 files.
Each file contains data in a different format.
and display them in arrylist. In the list it should contain name of the file and number of person in the text file example below.[code]...

I'm getting this error, while trying to save serial number to XML File.If the file doesn't exist, it saves the file fine, but if i change Registered tag to False in Xml file, and try again, it says "The Process Cannot acces the file ... because it is being used by another process". In my main form i read the information from XML, and in my regform (which i open if registered tag in xml is false) i write to the file.

I have a VB.NET application which runs perfectly with local host. But when I upload it to my server the session objects throw null reference exception.
Sessions is not working in a single page. If I use session on any other page it is working perfectly.
I have enabled session in that page using the EnableSessionState property. Also in web.config I enabled the use of session variables.

Right now i have the random line coming up but it is repeating itself. For instance, when i click on the button, line 1 appear, then line 4, and them line 1 again. I'm just having probems getting the line number and I know it's not called column number, more like selection start. When I do the selection start, it works, just not how I want it to like so:

but when I use that, it acts funny. I have it in my textbox's.keydown event. So if I were to use the arrow keys to navigate around text then it gets thrown off very easily. How would I do this?

View 4 RepliesI'm reading a text file with StreamReader, line by line. If a condition is met, then I do an operation and then start reading the file again from the first line. I realize I could close and then re-open the file, but surely this would be very slow.
I could do this easily in VB6, but pulling my hair out trying to do this in vB.net. It seems that 'Seek' is the function to use, but it doesn't work.
I've seen other examples, where it works, but you must open it a different way -- with a file number.

I've recently converted some VB 6 code over that used the old non-structured exception handling. I also have some .NET classes that raise custom exception classes. When the code was VB6 I used to expose my .NET classes using COM interop and errors raised from .NET classes were being caught correctly in VB6. Now that everything is .NET the old non-structured exception handling is still there in the converted classes. But now the Err.Number is not reflecting the HResult of the error raised. I wrote a simple little Windows Application form with 2 buttons to simulate the problem. Here is the code snippet:
