View 1 Replieswhat I gather, the biggest difference between the old SAPI 5.1 and SAPI 5.3 is that SAPI 5.3 actually takes less code to do some of the same things that SAPI 5.1 does. This is just a simple example that runs notepad and says it is before doing so.One thing to remember is that the name of speech lib is changed again. Now you have to do this: Project -> Add Reference -> .NET -> System.Speech
imports system.speech
Public Class Form1
Public WithEvents recognizer As New System.Speech.Recognition.SpeechRecognitionEngine
Dim gram As New System.Speech.Recognition.DictationGrammar()
[code]....
gram is a DictationGrammar object. As it turns out, there are two grammar objects in SAPI 5.3. As you've probably already guessed, DictationGrammar is for spoken language and the normal grammar object is for simple grammar rules.
So basically, Load the grammar, set audio to the default input device and then start an Async recognize call. They have a blocking recognize call and one thing to note here is that it will turn itself off after each sucessful recognized phrase. Meaning that you have to recall Async recognize at the end of the GotSpeech sub if you want to keep picking up voice commands. As it stands, this will pick up one command and no more because it stops recognition.
One neat thing about the synthesis engine is that you can specify things like ".NET" to be said as "dot net" by Anna. Also, as it stands, the periods aren't said and so are pretty much useless. It acts just like the Vista Recognition engine also so if you spell out a word, Anna will spell it out too.In this example there is an undeclared variable named "cmd" that I fail to understand. What is the role of it and where does it obtain it's value from. I actually assume it should be the one to get the decoded\recognized text from the recognizer but not sure how that is achieved.

View 2 RepliesI am converting a VB6 program to VB express and am having a couple of problems. One of them is a difference in String use. "Result=string$(32,0)" doesn't compile and I tried the trim function, but when I cannot use the "0" with the trim function the program shuts down with the error "Argument 'Start' is not a valid value." I need to replace the "Result=string$(32,0)" with a valid vb express line.

I have 16 student machines who can not access the windows live login during the school hours due to filtering restrictions. They need to register Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition within 30 days or the product becomes useless. The registration process wants them to login to access the keys. Is there an alternative way to obtain the keys as a group, rather than one-by-one?Everything I've found redirects to the 2010 version, but the 2008 version works with our textbooks.

View 2 RepliesIs there an easy way to display the rgb code of system colors in VB2008?
That is, I am looking for some code that will retrieve the names of the colors that are used in the system colors and display their rgb codes (and maybe show a sample), so I could display, for example, what the rgb code for "control" is.
This timer code is for VB6 and worked fine, It's to change the timer seconds into minutes, I'm not sure how to make this work for 2008 though.
Private Sub Form2_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
Timer1.Interval = 1000 ' set timer to 1 sec intervals.
Timer1.Enabled = False ' timer is off
End Sub

the errors are...
Error1Name 'StartTime' is not declared.
Error2Name 'MinutesToWait' is not declared.
Error3Name 'StartTime' is not declared.

View 1 RepliesI'm writing some VB2008 code to control four 7-seg LEDs I bought from Velleman. They came with some example code in VB 5.0, and with instructions telling me to input 5 bytes at a time in the format Chr$() & Chr$() & etc. for the rest of the 5 bytes. When I try to do this using VB2008, it rejects the $ sign, so I've tried it using the Chr() format, which VB2008 allows. However, it doesn't work. Is Chr() the new version of Chr$() or are they different entities? In sending data to the LEDs, I'm using LiveComPort.WriteLine() as my command. (My serial port is called LiveComPort) I also tried it with LiveComPort.Write() asthe command. I know that my serial port and the LEDs are working, because they respond to the demo program provided by Velleman.

View 3 RepliesI am trying to write a 'simple' program with vs 2005 that recognises my specific usb memory stick so that I can make windows log off or 'lock' when the device is not in any slot. I have found some ready code and I am trying to modify it for my needs. There compiling works but when it doesnt find any of the usb ports.It works by checking each port if it is a usb port and then compares the vendor and produck ID to the given. it seems simple enough but I cant get it to find the USB.
Here is the code:
I'm working on a program that needs Speech Recognition and every website says to download the Microsoft Speech Recognition Engine. I can't find that, but I've downloaded all the SDKs. Are they the same? And it always says to add a speech recognition component to the form, but I can't find where that is in Visual Basic 2005. I'm using the Express Edition, but I don't think that matters.

View 4 RepliesI was recently pursuing code that would allow me to read machine text off an image. The text will only consist of characters a-b, 0-9 and a few special characters (+,=,-,@,&). I have pursued a few third party OCR controls however all require licenses to be fully functional, would anyone know of any third party OCR controls that does not cost anything? If not is there anyway i can build my own OCR control that will read machine text?
