I have checked, and the directory that I am moving, does exist at the source, but does not exist at the destination. I have tried including some console.writelines to make sure my variables are correct, and they look good. The first bit of code works where it creates the new directory, but fails when I try to move anything over to that directory.

View 1 RepliesI wrote a cleanup program to go through some directories and delete files based on if the creation date is older than say 6 months. It works fine with some of the directories I have that contain around a few thousand small files. However, there is one directory (that contains small backup files from another program) that is loaded with over 300,000 files and it locks up on me as soon as I read in the first file in that directory.I am convinced it is the directory has too many files in it to open it. The server that the directory is on is slow. It takes a half hour to open the directory while on the server itself. I know it will take forever to delete the amount of files I want to delete, but I don't understand why it gets stuck and hangs there with no error message.Here is where I get stuck. I am trying to write code to save (in a text file) a list of folders/files that are contained in a specified folder. I want the list to be formatted to illustrate the folder tree structure by indenting sub-folders and there related files according to their relationship to the base folder.
I found and incorporated a recursive function for listing file & folders. This works fine for generating the list, but I am having difficulty with code to determine the sub-directory level relative to the base folder. the code that I have included below sort of works.......The problem seeme to be when going from a folder that is multiple levels up? from the base to one that is only one level from the base. Refer to my sample output. This should not be as difficult as I seemed to have made it, but recursion kinda blows my mind.

have just started vb .net and im working with the 2005 edition, but i would now like to make a program that i can use at home that will alter files names,Bassically where i rip cd's to put them onto my mp3 player they are always given a name starting with 01. etc, what i would like is a small bit of code that uses a while or for loop to go through every file in the folder and remove the first three characters.

The user should have write permissions to the folder and it should not be a location on a CD drive.Right now, it gives a "A generic error occurred in GDI+", which is not too helpful. I'd rather tell the user that the selected save location is not writeable.

The only two ways I can see how to do this is to either create an invisible folder to hold the files, or make my own extension. I think it would be easier to create an invisible folder through VB if possible. Can anyone point me in the right direction.

Currently, I am try to get the email addresses that have been saved or stored by the user of the computer. This isn't the emails that the user has sent or received, or the contacts he/she has in his address book. Just simply the email accounts that have been accessed from the computer.I know that there are some locations stored in the registry that have the email account. The email addresses that are used on the current computer. I just can't seem to find them on my computer.I am not sure if the registry is the only place to find it or if it stored on the web browser such as internet explorer or google chrome.

I have the communication to the com port all working great, but I need to get the com port description not just the "COM#" which is all I currently get.
I found in the registry where the description is stored but am having trouble doing what I need.

there is a varied number of sub keys. The are numbered 0000-NNNN depending on how many ports you have. Inside each of these keys, there are multiple values, although I am only interested in one or 2 of them.
My problem is, that I do not know how to get a list of the subkeys (the 0000-NNNN keys/folders) from the original key I posted. I have looked through a few registry tutorials, and I can view the default value in the listed key, but I could not find how to list the subkeys of the listed key.
Does anyone have any sample code they could share that shows how I can get a listing of subkeys, and then run through those subkeys checking for a specific value in one of the strings contained in the subkey?

If I go and manually make this folder it works brilliantly, I thought that this code would make the folder as well?
