Merge Two XElements With One Taking Precedence Over The Other To Become Just One Element?

Dec 12, 2009

I have a need to merge two XElements with one taking precedence over the other, to become just one element. The preference here is VB.NET and Linq, but any language would be helpful if it demonstrates how to do this without me coding to manually pick apart and and resolve every single element and attribute.For example, let's say I have two elements. Humor me on them being as different as they are.

1.
<HockeyPlayer height="6.0" hand="left">
<Position>Center</Position>
<Idol>Gordie Howe</Idol>
</HockeyPlayer>

2.
<HockeyPlayer height="5.9" startinglineup="yes">
<Idol confirmed="yes">Wayne Gretzky</Idol>
</HockeyPlayer>

The result of a merge would be

<HockeyPlayer height="6.0" hand="left" startinglineup="yes">
<Position>Center</Position>
<Idol confirmed="yes">Gordie Howe</Idol>
</HockeyPlayer>

Notice a few things: the height attribute value of #1 overrode #2. The hand attribute and value was simply copied over from #1 (it doesn't exist in #2). The startinglineup attribute and value from #2 was copied over (it doesn't exist in #1). The Position element in #1 was copied over (it doesn't exist in #2). The Idol element value in #1 overrides #2, but #2's attribute of confirmed (it doesn't exist in #1) is copied over.Net net, #1 takes precendence over #2 where there is a conflict (meaning both have the same elements and/or attributes) and where there is no conflict, they both copy to the final result.

LINQ To XML Syntax For XML Element With Attributes?

May 13, 2009

I'm a bit of a LINQ newbie and I was having some trouble with the following. I'm trying to perform a query using LINQ on an XML file and store the results in a list of DataClass objects that match the XML.I've got an XML file that is defined like this:

<NewDataSet>
<NewDataTable>
<Field>Accepted ASNs</Field>
<Val>59</Val>[code]....

I have created a Data class to support this XML format. What I would like to do is create a LINQ Query to grab these 3 records and store them into a List of my DataClass. In order to support multiple Order elements, I have my class defined with a generic list of "Order" structs... It looks like this:

Public Class ASNData
Private _field As String
Private _value As String[code].....

how to grab the 3 order elements and store them into my list of Order structs.

I need Xpath of the "element" in above XML using VB.Net NameSpace Manager For the "body" node i have done and its working but i couldnt do the same to "element":

dim bodynode as XMLNode=XML.SelectSingleNode(//ns:body,nsmngr)

where "nsmngr" is the namespacemanger created by me and "ns" is the name space of the "parent node" (which the "body" node inherits) added to the namespace manager as "ns"

Grab Attributes Of Articles Element Under Custom Section In Web.config File

I am building the 'TheBeerHouse' project in vb.net (the book is written in C#). Once I understand the concepts, I can usually convert it to vb. However, there are a few areas that give my some problems (which I will address individually). The first issue I have is the C# 'base' to VB 'MyBase'. [code] My understanding of this conversion is that I need to grab the attributes of the <articles> element under the <theBeerHouse> custom section in the web.config file.This code does not compile and the get the following error: 'MyBase' must be followed by '.' and an identifier.

C# - Respond To Descendent Class PropertyChanged Event?

Mar 10, 2011

I have a class, BaseSample, that uses another class, MainData, as one of its fields:

Protected _sampleData As MainData
Public Property SampleData() As MainData
Get

[code]....

MainData in turn has a collection of a class, ProcessData, as a field and ProcessData has a collection of a class, Measurement, as a field. I.e.:

MainData
|- IEnumerable (Of ProcessData)
|- IEnumerable (Of Measurement)

These classes are entities in a LINQ to SQL file. In the Measurement class, I raise the PropertyChanged event when the CrucibleOxidizedMass property changes:

Private Sub OnCrucibleOxidizedMassChanged()
RaiseEvent PropertyChanged(Me, New ComponentModel.PropertyChangedEventArgs("CrucibleOxidizedMass"))
End Sub

In the BaseSample class, I want to respond to the CrucibleOxidizedMass PropertyChanged event in any of the descendent Measurment instances. How would I do this?

.net - Add XElements To A Collection?

Oct 21, 2010

I am populating an XML structure (using VB.NET) to pass to a web service. Here is how one piece of the structure is filled, and the rest of the structure is filled in a similar manner:

Private Shared Function GetSpecialties(ByVal specialties As System.Data.Linq.EntitySet(Of Provider.provider_specialty)) As XElement
Return _
New XElement( _

[code]....

Some pieces of the structure can contain up to 30 elements. Each record takes about .1 seconds to create, and it needs to create about 35,000 records, so the whole process takes about an hour.Is there a quicker way to fill an XML structure like this?

Asp.net - Element 'system.webServer' Has Invalid Child Element 'rewrite'?

Feb 14, 2012

I have a number of rewrite rules for a lot of things that I did in IIS7, like removing trailing slashes, canonnical URLs, lowercase lettering, and such. IIS altered my web.config, and everything works fine on the website, like it should. But in the Visual Studio web.config, the opening < rewrite > statement is underlined in blue, and at the bottom of VS, it says that the element 'system.webServer' has invalid child element 'rewrite'. But this is how IIS made it. I didn't do this manually. Should I be concerned with this VS error, or should I just leave as be, since it's working how it should work? Here's an example of my web.config:

VS 2010 Check For Element Or Keep Trying Until Element Is Found?

Feb 21, 2012

I have been doing well and also I am a noob I know it and you know it a lot has started making sense and I am evening figuring new things out without using Google but of course I have hit another snag in my program so here goes

So my only problem is I need a way to check every x seconds for the element and then if its there proceed with my code and if its not wait and then check again or however this is done in VB.If this is not the way its done please point me in the right direction the code I am using to find and then navigate to the link is

Filtering Data More Than Once?

Dec 2, 2009

I created a query on a Access database, which I would like to show with the datagridview. So, I created a new table adapter with my query, which creates as well the datatable tbl1. Then, the wizard created the datagridview for me, showing the correct data. Now, I would like to filter these rows: I already read it is possible to do it by simply clicking "Add query...", but I would like to do it in a different way. I have some comboboxes, and I would like to use the strings inside them to filter my table tbl1. Is it possible to apply those queries one after the other on my datatable tbl1? I am able to filter only once with:

Me.tbl1TableAdapter.FillBySomething(Me.DataSet.tbl1, params...)

But, if I wanted to filter the result again?

Filtering The XML Content?

Oct 5, 2009

I have a structure representing a log, containing fields such as Order Number, Line Number, etc. Each time a test is done, this log structure is serialized and appended to an Xml file created on the day which the test was done. At present, i have 20 or so Xml files containing varying number of log structures which i would like to be able to filter through in a single search. My target at present is to be able to load all data against a specific order number, and also to perform a search and return distinct records, as there could be multiple Order Numbers in one or many files.So far, i've attempted to load all the data from all files into a large generic List(Of Log) and use LINQ to filter out the results. I've also tried loading all the data into a DataTable and filtering using the Select method. The last method i used was using the SelectNodes method from the XmlDocument class. All of these methods seemed to work but i was becoming stuck when filtering distinct records?

How To Tackle Some Filtering

Nov 18, 2009

working on a little app which requires the user to select items from a listbox bound to a dataview, then adding selected items to a new table. In the new table calculations are done, and so far its all working pretty good. The problems comes in is that there are many values and types to filter and I am having some trouble with the search aspects. So far in my code I am going about the problem using the datatables in this manner:

to sum it up:

form loads initial data to table
displays it in a dataview bound to a listbox
dataview is filtered using rowfilter queries, controlled in various manner
dataview is converted to table, then selected row is imported to final table
Calculations done on final table values

So far its pretty damn fast and works well, however the searching needs refinement. To give you an idea here is *some* of the search criteria in one of my rowfilter calls.

color:
red
black

[code]....

Form is requested to be as so:

6 checkboxes, and 12 numericupdowns (spin) buttons I have a seperate method to enable/disable them dynamically.

Have a look at the select row query: its getting messy already.Although I am specifying max and min values it seems to only filter by the max value and color, so something is wrong here...but i think it is just syntax... but already its getting a little long, just wait until i add the types as well..

Public Sub mainFilter()
' variables to enable filtering by color
Dim red = ""
Dim black = ""

[code]....

So basically is there a better way for me to go about filtering these table values? I notice in visual studio I can add queries to the dataset in there and they work quite well directly on the source table, without using a dataview and temptable, but when I open the query builder I can't add variables to the queries, which would force me to make queries for every foreseable scenario, and add buttons or menus to activate them all....not good.is there a way to hand code these queries with variables?

alternatively I thought about making a little rowfilter query builder, that substitutes variables for the rowfilter syntax, using some simple control flow, perhaps select case and then add them to the rowfilter query as the user enables/disables them in the form.i.e.

if RedCheckbox1 then
Redvar = "Color = 'Red'"
Maxvar = " & spinMax.value & "'

[code]....
