Finding The First Empty String In String Array?

i have a string array that i want to output to a text file. the array size is 10000. i fill the array starting from 0 with some strings. at the end, i only want to show the array from index 256 to the last array that is not empty (for eg. if the array is filled with data from 0 to 2000, i only want the text file to show the data from 256 to 2000 and ignore the remaining strings). Is there any function to do this? i am using visual basic express 2008. The code that i use is shown below

Im trying to make an on access file scanner, YES I know that C++ is better, but this is a concept of thought, trying to challenge myself to see if its possible in vb.
Anyways, I have a list of Hex definitions, my question is, how can I index this list so I can access the definitions faster. A definition looks like this:
Eicar.Test.File.a=58354f2150254041505b345c505a583534285
The part after the equals sign is the HEX signature, while the first part is the name of the definition.
Basically what I am trying to do is index them somehow where I can scan faster, as I have over 60,000 definitions and I have to split each individual one in order to get the signature name. It takes about 45 seconds or so to scan a 500KB file. I need it to be WAY faster.

This must've have been asked before but I couldn't locate it. In a mixed code project (VB and C#) we were debugging some old Visual Basic code where a statement as follows could be found:
If Request.Params("xxx") <> "" Then
'do something
I considered this a bug as Request.Params could be null, in which case the statement would've become false which wasn't the idea. So I thought. I just found out, -- probably for the tenth time and I will keep forgetting -- that the following two statements are not equal, while Nothing in VB should be equal to null in C# (thought I):
if(String.Empty == null) // always false
If String.Empty = Nothing Then ' always true
Should I dismiss this as a typical Microsoft backward compatibility effort, or should I consider this a huge error in the VB.NET compiler? Does anybody know the Microsoftean opinion on this oddity?

find the first empty value on an array?Say I have a directory and will occasionally be adding and removing items from an array to represent this. How would I go about making a loop until the entry is empty. I've tried various things like if null and that sort of thing but none of them seem to work- the problem is I guess that this array value is empty and the system can't deal with it without throwing an error message.Creating an array of a set size from the start isn't an option as I've no idea how big the directory will ultimately be.

I've got an issue with a program I am writing. The specific issue is replacing characters in a parent string by finding, and matching, specific characters within it that are parsed from an external xml file. just found out that replace(string does not do the same as string.replace when my string variable was an empty str the first one returns "nothing" and the second returns an empty string (as expected).just sloppy coding anyhow, it was a function that was converted from classic asp and never rewritten properly. My problem seems simple but I can't find an answer for it.I need to be able to pull a phone number (string) from an entire string. example: "My phone number is (xxx) xxx-xxxx, call me as soon as possible."
Its obvious to me that the phone number should be able to change depending on who you are talking too. So the question becomes, how do i search for the phone number's format within the above string?

I'm making a card game and the first thing I'm doing for it is generating a random card. I used an array for the cards (can't think of a better way to assign a picturebox to a card picture other then a huge select case block). I'm trying to split the 2D array into two parts but it doesn't work.

I want to take a string from a text box and split each letter of the string into an array. Then, I want to take the first item in the array(the first letter of the string)and capitalize it. Once I've done all that, I want to combine the array and convert it back to the original string it was, except I want the first letter to be capitalized(I've already placed this into a variable.)
