Access Objects Of Main Thread From BackgroundWorker's Thread?

Aug 4, 2011

I'm working with BackgroundWorker, I want the BackgroundWorker do the retrieval process of data from database while the user can still do another task on the form. The problem is, after retrieving the data, I can't seem to access the ListView in my Form from the DoWork event of BackgroundWorker, I will populate that ListView using the data I've retrieved.

Consider this example, this is how I'm doing it:

Public Class Test
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click

Multithreading - How To Ensure That A Code Is Running On Main Thread

Jan 21, 2012

It's easy to do so in objective c but I do not know how to do so in vb.net update:I know about control.invoke. But control.invoke requires a control that may change from program to program. What would be the easier way?So yes program is winform. However I need a solution that does not depend on any specific control. If that's the case actually I do not need things to be run on main thread do I?

Forms :: Set And Get A Value From A Class Property Within The Main Event Of A Module?

Jul 8, 2011

the project uses a submain as startup object which is located in a module, thy so the application will be started in tray. Within the main() event i need to deserialize a xml file and with it set the properties of a class and then set what the application will do.The problem is, after I deserialize it and put set the property values I try to get them in the same event(main) but when it gets the value it returns as nothing(if string) or 0(if integer) but in the debugging i saw it setting the values. Is there a way to do that, within the main() event of a module to set the properties of a class and then get them without being nothing/0 ?

Forms :: Thread Cannot Access Another Thread's Member Directly And UI Updating

Oct 18, 2011

I have a small problem that I am sure is due mostly to my inexperience with threading. I have used simple entirely self-contained threads before, but not to a great extent. I understand the basic laws that surround them, such as how a thread cannot access another thread's member directly, and must use delegates.

Load The Main Form Of A WPF So That A Separate Thread Goes And Gets Data From The Database While The Form Is In An Apartmentstate?

May 15, 2012

How do i load the Main form of a WPF so that a seperate thread goes and gets data from the database while the form is in an apartmentstate? (drag-able / movable) I Know this is possible with opening a new window from your main form like this :

Private Sub openOrderWindow()
Dim OrderWindow As Orders = New Orders
OrderWindow.ShowDialog()
End Sub

[code]....

I've tried putting MyBase.ShowDialog() and .Show() and .9000+ other things The only benefit I've got out of using a seperate thread to load from the databse is i can see the screen right away (as oppose to it being a transparent box until it loads) but i cannot move it around or minimize it?is there any way to make it Movable while it loads?

Multithreading - Access A Running Background Thread VS2008

Mar 23, 2012

I created a background thread that get's data and returns it to the main thread; this works. Now I want to be able to stop the SQL request from the main thread (probably on a button click). This is my test code for creating the thread (working):

[Code]....

How can I access the background thread to stop the query on demand? Do I need to set a flag on the main thread telling the background thread to stop running then have the background thread poll the main thread at intervals? I was trying to look for an example but I wasn't able to find a good one.

I have a class in winap call classapi which has all the methods that the api calls and all works well. The problem is that one of the methods in my class api needs to get a handle on form elements in the main worker thread. Whenever I try to access an existing form I keep getting null because the for exists in the main worker thread and my api call is in a seperate thread.

Database - Running SQL Query From Module With A Function Call From The Form?

Jan 28, 2010

I have a form set up where I want to run the function PopulateGrid on it's Form_Load event. I have initialized the DB connection as follows:

Private Sub Main_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
LoadConfigFile()
cn = New OleDbConnection("Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0; Data Source=" & config("DatabasePath") & ";")
cn.Open()
End Sub

Now, I want to run the PopulateGrid function directly after I connect to the database as shown above. I'm confused as to how I'd use a database query in a module when the database is initialized in my main form. Would simple setting the variable cn to public work?

Closing A Form Running In A Different Thread

Sep 6, 2011

I have form1 and form2. A button on Form1 calls a thread background process (below). That process processes the command and when its done should close form2. I'm opening form2 within the current thread but trying to close it in the background thread. This is because if i close it in the current thread it closes immediately. I included the 2 functions below and what I have tried in the inline comments. Form2 is a simple form, basically just an animated gif. It is to show the user that something is happening(like a status bar) then close when its complete. I tried running different priorities instead of different threads but due to the results threading seems to behave the best. I'd like to keep access to both forms during the process, the pc, and screen refreshes realtime.[code]

Write In Worker Thread In A Data Table And Rich Text Box in Main Thread

Mar 4, 2009

I'm creating a Client Server application which involves theServer running some scripts in clients and getting back results in an automated way. In Server, other than Main thread, i have 2 worker threads, a) one monitoring response from clients and b) the other scheduling next available job to respective client which executes that job. The issue here is ,I want these worker threads to write the status of their work in the UI(which comes under Main Thread). Also i need to write things in worker thread in a Data table and Rich Text Box in Main thread. But, I can't do so, since it has been blocked to access one thread's function or property directly from others. Is there any work around to do this?

Creating A Progress Bar That Runs On Another Thread While Keeping Calculation In Main Thread

Nov 12, 2009

Preface: I know this is an unusual/improper way to do this. I can do this with a "real" ShowDialog(), background worker/thread, and so on. I am trying to do specifically what I describe here, even if it is ugly. If this is impossible for X reason, I have created a fancy progress dialog for some of our long running operations. I need to have this dialog shown on a new thread while having processing continue on the calling (UI in most cases) thread.

The Main sub routine in turn call several sub routines/functions from with the same module,several different classes in the same application. Also some sub routines/functions call routines from a class library. Now say the routine/function in class library goes into a infinite loop and never returns. I would like my thread in the application to raise a event and display message to the users about the infinite loop. I am giving some sample code for the application.

Forms :: VB - MDI - Application That Consists Of Mainly One Main Form - Ranging Form Graphs, Tables, Dropdown Boxes, Print Preview

Apr 7, 2010

I have to write an application that consists of mainly one main form, but several different things I wanna display. Pretty standard I guess. So there is a menu, some controls, and the main stuff below (ranging form graphs, tables, dropdown boxes, print preview, etc). I would like to use it like one would use frames in html, design an object that is limited to a box or panel that I define. The literature I have does not give me a clear idea of how to do this (yet). The most obvious seem to be the use of MDI, open a predefined form with no borders, maximize it before showing and remove all minimize/maximize options. But that does not work so well. The form inside the MDI parent does not fit the size that is given for it when it is loaded. e.g.

[CODE]:......................

So my main question is: Is MDI the way to go here at all or are there better/easyer ways to achieve this? If MDI is the way to go, how do I sucessfully restrict a child form inside another object, without giving the user any opportunity to resize (i noticed that I have minnimize/maximize/close buttons, even if I disable them on the child forms themselves)
