When I open my child form,
frm_Analogs.ShowDialog()
It opens up the new form, but now I can not interact with my main form. It will not accept focus or allow me to interact with it.
Do I need to change the form type?
I have a MDI Parent form created with a MenuList, I also have the MDI child form created.ow do I go about using the MenuList to open the MDI child form within the parent form?

but when the form opens it flickers a lot. so i want move the new form behind the main form while it loads so the user does not see the flicker. once it is done loading i will set the form to topmost. how do i move the new form behind the main form?
I've recently just started looking into TCP sockets for Server-Client communications in VB.Net(VS2010); which I have working fine whilst on a single form. However, when I try to load another form it calls the form_load part and runs that part, but then appears as if it's in an endless loop on the original form because the mouse turns to time out whilst on the new form. Client side Login form(works fine and is responsive)

Tried breakpointing to find out where the loop appears to be and I think its in the doRead sub.
I have create a project with one main form window and also i have to use a number of other forms as well. now i want to open these other forms inside the main window and not outside. I'm using Visual Studio .NET 2010 as developing environment.

View 7 RepliesI have a program I've been working on for some time now and I'd like to try to streamline it somewhat. I have a main menu form that has a split panel, in the left panel is a treeview that displays forms you can open and when one is selected, it opens in a child window in the right panel. Each time I open form I called DWNForm, it does a series of dataset loads which are the populating items for a series of listviews.
What I would like to do is have these datasets load once during the mainMenu load and then have the DWNForm be able to access the datasets once it is called from the treeview selection.
I want to create an IMAGELIST in a main form and add to it then have it accessible within a child form. I found several MS examples on database shared access but this is NOT the concept I am after. Straight forward:
Child_Form.<function_to_execute_in_child_form>(The_Passed_Imagelist)
So, within the child form it want to do whatever I like to the IMAGELIST! I have tried passing the object by reference and anything I could think of.
The problem is that icon on the Child Form appear in front of Menu strip control on MDI form when child form is maximised.

I have a date selector on mdi parent that updates a property when date is changed. When I open a child form, it grabs the property just fine. However if I change the date again after the child is open the date does not change on the child unless I close and reopen the form as expected. What would be the best way to automatically update all open child forms when the date is changed on the parent at anytime? running a timer to parse the date property is impractical.
View 2 RepliesI have to write an application that consists of mainly one main form, but several different things I wanna display. Pretty standard I guess. So there is a menu, some controls, and the main stuff below (ranging form graphs, tables, dropdown boxes, print preview, etc). I would like to use it like one would use frames in html, design an object that is limited to a box or panel that I define. The literature I have does not give me a clear idea of how to do this (yet). The most obvious seem to be the use of MDI, open a predefined form with no borders, maximize it before showing and remove all minimize/maximize options. But that does not work so well. The form inside the MDI parent does not fit the size that is given for it when it is loaded. e.g.

So my main question is: Is MDI the way to go here at all or are there better/easyer ways to achieve this? If MDI is the way to go, how do I sucessfully restrict a child form inside another object, without giving the user any opportunity to resize (i noticed that I have minnimize/maximize/close buttons, even if I disable them on the child forms themselves)
disable the parent window form as soon as the user will open the child form....
for eg...consider daniweb...when we click on member login the background form gets grayed out....
Disabling the form is not the option cause it will just disable all the controls of the form....but I need a grayed out screen between the current child form and the parent form....
note - the parent form is not the MDI form...it is just a normal window form and when the child form is open and if the user clicks on the main form without closing the child form then the screen should show some movement...
I tried disabling the form...changing the background of the form to opaque....but could not get through it....
How to control other form from a main form? For example :
I want to change background color in Form2 after a button in Form1 is clicked.
I want that the child form's moving space inside the main form would be limited so it wouldn't go over the borders like in the picture.[code]...

I have an MDI form MDIPartent1 and I have a form Form1.vb Form1.vb has a series of command buttons on it that make the various forms open and close as needed, much like a menu GUI (Graphical User Interface). I have adjusted the settings of my project to open MDIParent1.vb first and this parent form is set to MAXIMIZE on the screen. After that, I want Form1.vb which should be a child form of MDIParent1 to open in MAXIMIZED state as well. So, I'm wondering what the proper sytax would be and in what EVENT this should be in ?

When i run this set of codes, system keep telling me that same form cannot be both mdichild and mdiparent, however, I never set my child form as a parent.

I've created a windows form application in vb 2010. I've got all my forms complete and now want to add a Login screen. One the login screen, after the username/password is entered and OK is pressed, I try to open the a connection string. Obviously if the connection fails, the user has entered the incorrect credentials. If the credentials are ok, True is returned and I then open up the Main form that shows the correct items for the logged in user.
