VS 2008 Form KeyPreview On Many Forms Of Large Application

Apr 11, 2012

As quick solution to the user wanting to be able to open a particular form from any other form (in a large application with many forms, not an MDI app), I added KeyPreview to each form and corresponding KeyPress event so that said form will open (ShowDialog) upon pressing F12 from all these other forms.

Since this update has been in place, the user has been getting intermittent (maybe 2 or 3 within the course of a workday) but nasty errors such as "exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation" and the dreaded "out of memory". Is there reason to believe (off the top of your head) that the KeyPreview could be causing this?

Split A Large Set Of Tabular Data Into Smaller Relevant Tables?

May 11, 2011

I'm really hoping I can describe this question in an understandable way. This is a puzzle that I have not been able to begin to solve even though I (mostly) understand it. I'm just not sure where to start, and I'm really hoping someone out there can get me headed in the right direction.

I have a LARGE table of data. It describes relationships between objects. Let's say the Y-axis has items numbered 1-1000, and the X-axis has items 1-1000 also. If item #234 on the Y-axis is related to item #791 on X, there will be a mark in the table where the row and column cross. In some industries this is referred to an a Truth Table. One can, at a glance, see how many items in a system relate to each other. The marks in the table can help to identify trends and patterns.Here's some other helpful stuff about the nature of the table:

The full range of the number of relationships (r) for each item on either axis can be 1 <= r <= axisTotal.The X and Y axis will share common items, but each axis will also have items that the other axis does not.Each item will only exist once per axis. It can be on X and Y, but it would only be on each one 1 time.The total number of items on each axis will most likely NOT be equal. Each axis could have from 50 to 1000's of items.

The end result is that this is going to be a report that needs to be printed. We have successfully printed a table that had about 100-150 items on each axis on an 11in X 17in piece of paper. Any more than that and it begins to be so small it's unreadable.

What I am trying to do is split the super large tables into smaller tables, but related points need to stay together. If I grab item 1-100 on X then I would need each item they relate to from Y.I've generated a number of these tables and, while the number of relationships CAN be arbitrary, I have never seen an item relate to all other items. So in real practice the range is more like 1 <= r <= (10% * axisTotal). If an item's relationships exceed this range, it can be split up into multiple tables, but that is not optimal at all.

At the end of the day I think we, and our clients, would be happy if a 1000x1000 item table was split into 8 to 10 printed pages of smaller, related tables.One other thing worth noting, there will be no empty rows or columns in the table. Every item on both the x and y axis will relate to at least 1 item on the opposite axis.

.net - Given A Large Number Of Objects, Create Multiple Forms In Designer For Them Or Use Code To Create The Forms?

Dec 29, 2010

If I have a large number of classes, each similar to the other in certain aspects (they all share a common base class, but each does things differently), and I need to create Windows forms for each to allow easy changing of their values through a GUI? Create one matching form for each object in VS' forms designer, Or Use code to create the forms dynamically at runtime.

#2 makes the most sense to me, because a lot of these objects will share very common features of the form, notably "Ok" and "Cancel" buttons. But one object might need to draw a textbox on the form while another might need to draw a combobox. Not to mention, if I want to put icons on the "Ok" and "Cancel" buttons, I'd have to do this for each copy of the form in designer, and that sounds like it could get out of hand quickly.But is drawing forms through code sane? VS' forms designer is pretty sophisticated and designed to make life easier. Am I wise to consider ignoring its functionality and diving into the trench warfare of forms design through code? Or are there examples of automating form creation based on an existing object's properties?

Forms :: Using Large Database In WinForms?

Dec 27, 2009

I am currently helping to write a Visual Basics program that was originally writing with access.The Original Access program has been used and modified over the past 5 years, During that time the database has gotten pretty big.The problem I am having is If I add the entire database to my data sources it creates data tables for every Table and Stored procedure even when they are not currently used in the program resulting in a 20+ minute build time just to debug.I am currently only adding Tables and Stored Procedures as i need them, so its not that much of a problem now, but as I continue to work and add tables the build time is going to go back up, and Id hate to have to wait 20+ minutes to test a small tweak I made.

Localizing Large Number Of Windows Forms

Oct 12, 2011

I'm working on a project that involves localizing a large number of Windows Forms. We're dealing with layout using the TableLayoutPanel control, which works nicely. One area we're striking problems with is when we set the Form.Localizable property to True, we then end up having to manage one .resx file per form per language.

That would be fine if the .resx files only contained the Localized text, but it also contains a vast amount of layout data for the form. Is there a way to separate the localizable text elements from the control layout information, that continues to work in the visual studio IDE? I've noticed that I can modify my the form's designer file to look at another resource file, but when I use the form designer, these changes are deleted:

'Label1
Me.Label1.AutoSize = True
Me.Label1.Dock = System.Windows.Forms.DockStyle.Top
Me.Label1.Location = New System.Drawing.Point(3, 0)
Me.Label1.Name = "Label1"
Me.Label1.Size = New System.Drawing.Size(61, 13)
Me.Label1.TabIndex = 1
Me.Label1.Text = My.Resources.ResourceManager.GetString("Form1_Label1_Text")

VS 2010 Cascade Forms - Large Ones In Back

Mar 11, 2012

I've got a collection of a type of form and multiple of these can be displayed on the screen independently at the same time and now I'm wanting to add the ability to cascade these forms, but these forms can all be re-sized so it'll be very rare when they are of the same or similar size. I would like to be able to cascade them based on their present size, so the largest for is in the back and the smallest is in front.

I also realize that a form could be wider than than another form but that other form is taller than the current one, in which case I would like the taller form to be considered the larger one (an arbitrary decision, I know). Here's the code I currently have that cascades them in the order they are in the collection, I just need to know how to re-order them based on their size.

Forms :: Updating Large List Instantly - Datagridview Vs. Listview ?

Nov 1, 2011

What I am trying to do is to instantly apply a filter to a large list of data such that the list is updated almost immediately regardless of the number of items in the list. I have this working using a listview right now but it is far from instant, a list of 5000 items takes over a minute to get through. What I do currently is to maintain a cache of my data that my listview entries are based on. When the user selects a filter I parse this data one item at a time and determine if each item should still be displayed in the listview, if not I remove it. The complexity of determining whether or not a data entry meets the filter requirements is O(1), but just getting through each element in a loop takes significant time, and so does updating the list view graphically at the end of the process.

I have considered using a datagridview instead, using a database connection. I have never done this before and my main question here is whether this would allow me to do what I have described. With the database I could form an SQL query to return only the items that meet the new filter requirements... but would the data in the form update immediately, or would there still be significant delay?

Memory Leak In A Very Large ASP.NET Application

Jun 17, 2012

I have a problem with a memory leak in a very large ASP.NET application. After about 24 hours of usage (sometimes a lot more) an OutOfMemory exception is thrown. Therefore I am trying to understand how managed memory works in .NET. When does an ASP.NET application throw an OutOfMemory exception? The server has a lot of RAM and there is always plenty of memory left when an OutOfMemory exception is thrown. I understand the difference between virtual memory and physical memory. How much memory does the W3WP process have to consume before an OutOfMemory exception is thrown? Is there a setting somewhere e.g. in the Machine.Config file? The ASP.NET process is never recycled.

.net - Why Does A Large Amount Of AppSettings Calls To A None Existent Key Cause Application Crashes

May 23, 2012

There is a very strange problem with a Windows Service I am working on that I would like to understand why it occurs. The service loops every 5 minutes and then within that loop it loops through keys containing webservice URLs that are numbered such as:

<add key="URL.1" value="http://dummy1.com/Service.asmx"/>
<add key="URL.2" value="http://dummy2.com/Service.asmx"/>
<add key="URL.3" value="http://dummy3.com/Service.asmx"/>

The code that does this check is:

If String.IsNullOrEmpty(AppSettings("OM." & intCount & ".Name").ToString) Then

When it hits a key that doesn't exist an exception is thrown and the service stops and waits for 5 minutes until the next loop.This usually works great but every week or two the Windows service will crash on that line without any Exception. The application log has a line from before that line but nothing after, none of the Try Catches are hit (the main one is catching the base "Exception" class).In the Event Log for Windows is the following:

Faulting application name: MyService.exe, version: 1.1.2.0, time stamp: 0x4fa22a24
Faulting module name: KERNELBASE.dll, version: 6.1.7601.17651, time stamp: 0x4e211319
Exception code: 0xe053534f

[code]....

The weird part is that this line of code is executing fine 300 times a day for at least a week which is around 2000 times before that one time it causes a full crash of the application. why this is occurring? I have changed that line of code to not rely on Exceptions and it has been working fine for a week now with no crash so could be something to do with too many Exceptions - maybe causing a stack overflow?

Split Commandline Application Path From Arguments?

Dec 26, 2005

I have commandline strings that contains application paths and might contain arguments. Some examples:

1. "C:Program FilesMicrosoft Officewinword.exe" "C:some dirdocumentname.doc"2. "C:Program FilesSome Dirapp.exe" /dosomething3. C:Program FilesSome Dirsomefile.exe4. C:somedirsomefile.exe /whatever5. C:Windows
otepad.exe6. someapp.exe

I'm looking for a simple way to split the path to the application and the optional argument.Sometimes the string contains quotes around the path (1&2) and sometimes, even when the path contains spaces, the string does not contain quotes(3). And sometimes the string does not contain spaces in the path (4&5&6), but a space is used before the argument(4). And (6) is a executable without a path. I have to use the environmentvariables the find the fullpath of the executable. This string (6) can also have arguments.Is there a standard function available to do this split?

Note:I have a regex pattern to handle (1,2,4,5,6), but is doesn't work for (3), because of the spaces in the path."[ ]+(?=(?:[^""]*""[^""]*"")*(?![^""]*""))"I cannot control the strings. Some of them come from user input and some of them come from the registry.

Application That Has Multiple Front Ends Developed Using Windows Forms / WPF / ASP / Compact Framework Mobile Forms

Apr 9, 2010

I have the requirement to create an application that has multiple front ends developed using Windows Forms, WPF, ASP and Compact Framework Mobile Forms.I would like to be able to create a series of obejct representing the business logic and have this logic accessible from the various front ends available. My first thought was to use remoting as I'd like to be able to pass the business objects back and forth between client and server but the compact framework doesn't support remoting and also transferring a full framework business object to a compact framework business object doesn't seem possible.My next thought was to use web services but again the passing of business objects seems to be very hard to accomplish. Without doing this I would have to create individual web methods for each business operation.

Finally my next option is to use sockets and write the whole client/server logic within some classes and expose them to the UI/Business layer. My only problem with this is it is not scaleable should the number of clients increase dramatically whereas using remoting or web services I can host the solution via ASP.Net.Does anybody have an ideas on the best way forward for this or even have any input on how they would write an application that required a windows form, wpf, asp website and mobile device GUI all of which want to use the same business logic?

Application Does Not Return From Call To System.Windows.Forms.Application.DoEvents?

Aug 2, 2011

I have a windows forms application written in VB.NET which scrapes information from serveral web pages (who doesn't right)? Anyway, I am having problem with one particular site where partway through the page navigation my application hangs. When I press pause (or break) in the debugger, it stops on a call to System.Windows.Forms.Application.DoEvents.

Resuming execution shows that it really is stuck on this line (it does not reach the next line of code). It also hangs about the same point each time I run it (at least its consistent). Since System.Windows.Forms.Application.DoEvents yields to other threads on the same processor and then resumes execution of the current thread, I think the problem is that some other thread is not behaving well (not returning from some event handling code). I thought Windows 7 was pre-emptive, which makes me
doubt that theory but I really don't know.

[Code]...

The program scrapes somewhere between 12 and 14 pages before it gets stuck on the call to DoEvents. Does anyone have a clue why this would happen? Why would any call to DoEvents hang?

I think this question has been asked already in a couple different ways and I've reviewed those posts and I've tried to do what was suggested but it doesn't seem to work for me. I've tried to place a second split container inside panel2 of the first split containter. This gave me what appeared to be a three way vertical split.
