Mar 18, 2011I just learned some basics of multi threading in VB.net recently as I came across processing a large List of records and inserting them into SQL database one by one.
I have code look like this:

Itemlists is a global lists i retrieved from database, everything looks fine to me but when i run this program, I found that the threads are inserting one records 9 times into the database(I have 9 threads in total), which makes me think that maybe i need to specifically assign 1/9 of a list to each thread? Is there another way to do it which doesn't require the splitting of the list, if not , how do i split it then assign?

May 19, 2011Im a college student and this is my first programming class, i am having extremely diffcult time with arrays and sequential file processing. Im not asking for the whole program, just something to get me started and hints along as i progress with it. Please help me get started on my program, its due in 2 days.
Here are the requirements....
1. The program must input any number of individual�s last and first names using two separate textboxes.
2. The array of names must be sorted by the last name using a bubble sort. You must code the sort.
3. The program must be able to recall the names from the file and add to the existing list of names so that more names can be added to, sorted, and written back to the file in sorted order.
4. Sort in ascending order: A to Z
5. All names must be displayed in a listbox in sorted order when the user wishes to see them.
6. In the listbox the last and first names must be separated by a comma and a space. Example: Smith, Mary
7. The user must be able to search for a name in the array, using the binary search algorithm. You must code the search.
8. Do not use module-level variables. Instead you may choose to use Static.
9. The program must be designed using Visual Basic 2008

May 30, 2011I am working on an application which involves serial port communication with stepper motors. Now I am sending queries to the PLC via modbus protocol. There is one query in which I ask the PLC for the current position of the moving motor and display it in a current position textbox using a DO Loop. Here the problem is the textbox only displays the position at the end of the motor movement and not while the motor in movies though I have included the code to do so inside the DO loop.

Apr 1, 2011so my program takes what the user enters into a textbox and searches through the data i have stored and if it matchs one of the peices of data it displays the apropriate data to the user. This all worked fine till i changed the textboxes to be added dynamicly to the form when it is load and i put all textboxes in a collection. So now when the text is sent to the search sub it sends the data over but always returns that it didnt find a match. But if i go into the search sub and just tell it what to search for automaticly it finds it no problem.

What I would like to do is read this data in as fast as possible either line by line and processing the data as I go by line. Or read the whole lot in and THEN process it, which woulkd be the fastest ? I used to do this in Excel but want to transfer it to VB and don't know really how to get started I have the following but would like to know how to get the columns into a named array and then how to itterate through array.

C# - Implementing Transaction Processing To Persist Application Data
May 27, 2011Let's say an application needs to persist mostly immutable data. Let's say the application's data files can grow fairly large. How would you implement a simple transaction processing so that changes are either successfully committed or rolled back?
The only requirement is to use built-in .Net libraries. (no databases, no third party libraries)
Here's my current solution. The data file will have three main sections: (1) header, (2) data, (3) index. For now, the header section simply contains an offset to the start of the index section. The data section will store mostly immutable data. The index section will contain serialized objects with enough information to access the data section.
When the application starts, it only needs to deserialize objects from index section. Anything from the data section can be fetched as needed. As the application gets ready to write changes, it makes a temporary copy of the original header and index sections. These would be small relative to the data section. New data would then be appended to the original data section. Once all data has been written, in memory objects would be serialized to the end of the file to become the new index section.
If all this goes without a hitch, the temporary file can be deleted. If something goes wrong, the temporary file can be used to restore the data file to its original state.
Will this work or is there a more elegant approach?

May 15, 2011I was using 2 forms, the first one has general data capture and the second one is a calendar form. On Form1 I have mulitple windows controls. A Textb ox and beside a Calendar button. When I click on a Calendar Command button, it should open calendar form and once the user selects the date, the date should be placed in the text box on the form1. Identical to this on Form1 I need multiple textboxes that needs date to be captured.I cannot use a global variable for this as I need to validate mulitple text boxes. To explain this, I have a Transaction Date and Date Received. I need to validate whether Transaction date is prior Date Received or not? I dont want to use several global variables b'coz I might need multiple validations as above. Please help me on this.

Nov 26, 2011Quite a few threads on passing data from one form to another, but I'm struggling to work out how to share data between the two - back and forth.
For example:
Class1 is a class with 10 string properties
Form1 has 10 labels ("Label1", "Label2" etc) and a [Configure] button.
Form2 has 10 textboxes and a [Apply] button.
I want to load with Form1, and create an instance of Class1. Click the Configure button and load Form2, passing Class1. On Form2 I want to manually fill in the 10 textboxes and hit Apply. The Apply should update the Class1 instance and close the form.
Form1's Label controls should then be updated with the data from the Class1 instance.
I'm fine creating the forms and classes, as well as passing the class into Form2 with a custom Sub New(EmptyClass as Class1) constructor. This gets the empty class into Form2, but how can I get the populated class back to Form1?
As Form1 already exists I don't want to create a new instance with another custom Sub New(PopulatedClass as Class1)
It's also key to be able to use the Form2 multiple times, basically ending up with a Data class being displayed as part of Form1 but updated using Form2? (For example if the Class has already been created and populated with data when it's passed back to Form2 for the second time I would pre-load the Textboxes with the values already in the class).

Mar 29, 2010I have a program that tracks packages. Shipment and package entities are persisted in SQL database, and are displayed in a WPF view. Upon initial retrieval of the records, there is a noticeable pause before displaying the new shipments view, and I have not even implemented the code that counts shipments that are overdue/active yet (which will necessitate a tracking check via web service, and a lot of time).I have built this with the Ocean framework, and all appears to be doing well, except when I first started my foray into multi-threading. It broke, and it appeared to break something in Ocean... Here is what I did:

With the click of another button i hope to have all the values entered into these text boxes stored in a text file. However, i cant seem to find a way to add strings together to allow me to retrieve the values entered within the text boxes created.

The program should initially display Form1, and Form2. Clicking of the button on either form will modify the Title Text of both forms. I think that you will find the final end result to be pretty neat, as it works with any number of open forms not just two. I think asking for the Controller class is easier than asking for the code in the forms. My solution for Controller class has 7 lines of content, 9 lines if you include Class, EndClass. A minimal solution could achieved with only 4 lines of content, but it would a textbook example of bad programming.

Sep 8, 2010VB.NET newbie here... I have an vb.net windows application set up. It has multiple forms, about 6 in all. There's a main menu form, and then 5 other forms to collect data. The user will collect data on each form and bounce back and forth between forms. How do I get the forms to retain the data that has been entered into the text boxes and/or other controls on the forms? For example, they might fill out a few textboxes on a form, but then need to go to a different form and fill something out... and then back to the previous form. Right now, when they come back to the form, all the data previously entered in to the text boxes is gone.
