General Exception Handling Without Global.asax File?

Mar 21, 2012

I was wondering if there was a way to catch all unhandled exceptions in a visual studio project. My project does not have any files named global or global.asax so I was wondering if there was some other way to catch any and all unhandled exceptions? So far I've tried to put exception handling around specific blocks of code, but it doesn't have any effect.

.net - Try Catch Finally Blocks.. Do I Still Need Them When Handling Errors In The Global.asax

Jun 2, 2010

I am handling errors via my global.asax in this method:

Dim CurrentException As Exception
CurrentException = Server.GetLastError()
Dim LogFilePath As String = Server.MapPath("~/Error/" & DateTime.Now.ToString("dd-MM-yy.HH.mm") & ".txt")
Dim sw As System.IO.StreamWriter = New System.IO.StreamWriter(LogFilePath)

[code]....

In my code I currently have no other error handling. Should I still insert try, catch, finally blocks?

Exception Handling In Winforms Application Using A Global Error Handler?

Sep 9, 2009

I have a Windows Form application that has a global error handler to display unexpected errors.

Namespace My
Class MyApplication
Delegate Sub ProcessParametersDelegate(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal args() As String)

[code]....

1) for the same deployed code, I SOMETIMES get line number in the displayed StackTrace error message and sometimes do not, even when the error message includes source code that I have written rather than a referenced binary. The project is compiled with a DEBUG configuration.

2) The application strangely minimizes to the tray when the error occurs (I thin it is unlikely that anyone can diagnose this issue w/o my more code posted, but I'll mention it anyways)

3) When I try to intentionally raise an error by, for example, dividing by zero hoping to test by global error handler, I get a dialog error message from the interactive debugger rather than jumping into my global error handler (which i want to debug because there is more to it than I posted.) Do you have any idea how to triggerand force teh execution of the global event handler?

Add This Code To Global.asax?

Dec 14, 2010

I need to add the code below to my global.asax file. It begins with a Sub Application_BeginRequest . My global.asax already has a section that begins with Protected Sub Application_BeginRequest(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) I'm assuming that I should not have two sections with Sub Application_BeginRequest I tried putting the core of the new code into my existing Sub Application_BeginRequest and it returns no errors but it when I try to view the website in VWDE 2010 it times out. Something is causing it to run or load slowly.

This is the code that I'm adding:

<script runat="server">
Sub Application_BeginRequest(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs)
Dim url = String.Empty

Using IHttpModule Over Global.asax?

I've been given the thrilling task of re-writing our exception handling system. Whilst I will state that handling exceptions from an application-wide point of view isn't something we want, typically it's unavoidable when our team are understaffed for the sheer amount of work we need to push out the door, so please, no flaming the globalised solution to exception handling here

Use Global.asax To Catch Missing PDFs?

Sep 16, 2010

I'm trying to use the Global.asax file in the root application of the website to catch requests for pdf files in the root that don't exist any more. I've configured iis to send pdf requests to asp.net. The whole thing works perfectly on development. It also works on the live system with missing .aspx pages, but not .pdf. Instead an "Error Code 64: Host not available". I'm using the Global.asax file to avoid the web.config and child applications (1.1 & 2.0) inheriting settings.[code]...

Try / Catch In Global.asax While Logging Errors To Db Needed?

For example, on a random page I could have:[code]So my question is in the Application_Error method, do I need the try/catch block when trying to write to the database? I'm thinking I would in case something goes wrong with the connection, etc. - but is this really necessary? Also, what would I do in the catch block if there is an error? At that point I would be catching the error of logging an error which is confusing in its own right.

Show An Alert From Global.asax On A Page That's Experiencing A SQL Timeout?

Related, can I access the page instance which raised the error that Global.asax is handling?

When Catching A General Exception, How To Determine The Original Exception Type

When catching an exception in .net, you can have as many type-specific exception blocks as needed. But I usually try to have at least one "general" exception catch block. But is there a way to get the type of the "real" exception thrown that is caught by the generic exception handler, perhaps using reflection? For example, if I have

Catch ex As System.ServiceModel.FaultException(Of InvalidUser)
ProcessModuleLoadException(Me, ex)
Catch ex As System.ServiceModel.FaultException(Of SQLExceptions)

Approach For Handling Global Application Object?

Jun 15, 2009

What is the recommended way in VS.NET to have a global application handler object? Something that can load/verify/return user folders, settings, application specfic settings, manage the unhandled exceptions, etc. I would have a class that has most of the code, then subclass it for each application.

I can create one if I start as a module instead of a form. But then I lose some options such as NetworkAvailabilityChanged, etc. I define a "Public" object from within a form (I don't think so and don't feel this would be the right approach.)?can I "attach" an object to an existing global object store (such as "My."), etc.?

Once created, any object in my application should be able to reference methods/properties of this application object to get default folders, user values, etc. as necessary.

I normally don't have a MDI application, and When I force an error, neither of the events get fired. I don't have anything in a try catch block. How do I do this with a MDI application?

VS 2010 Easy Global Numeric Key Handling?

Oct 5, 2011

I have an application which is strictly numeric input only, for everything in the main form, call it X in this post.

I want every single control that can handle input in X to only accept numeric entries, I have a way of doing this but it requires me to put a tonne of arguments for the handle, I tried to change this to handle any .KeyPress event on MyBase or Me (X) but it won't work.

Code that works but requires 1 000 arguments:

Private Sub numeric_keys_only(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.KeyPressEventArgs) Handles msTEXT.KeyPress, ssText.KeyPress etc...

[Code]...

I have tinkered with the latter, specifying things like all the controls in a certain group box and it doesn't work.

I know the sub header has to be changed - I have changed it in my tests, that is just the example code. When I change everything it runs, just doesn't do anything.

Exception Handling Best Practices .Net?

Dec 8, 2009

I have a general question regarding best practices for exception handling. I have a class library that uses structured error handling. The functions in the library generally perform some mathematical calculations and all return a boolean value indicating whether an exception occured or not (i.e. exception occured = true, no exception = false). The actual calculated result in the function is returned as a ByRef parameter.

Anyway the input variables for my calculations are all passed to the funtions as parameters. I perform some basic checks on these inputs (e.g check that an input is not negative etc) as part of the function code. The next stage is where im unsure of the best way to do things. Using the example i just mentioned, if an input parameter is negative, I can either throw an exception such as "ArgumentOutofRange", or i can simply show a messagebox with some info about what happened. Either way i do it the function will return true. At the moment i am throwing an exception, but on reading the "Best practices for exception handling" it is recommended you dont throw an exception for things that can be checked programatically because of "performance/overhead issues".

I'm a little confused by what they mean by this. What kind of overhead are they talking about? Slower program? More disk space required? More memory required? When my functions return true, the calling methods basically drop everything and stop calculations (exit sub), so im not sure that the overhead issues they are talking about are as important to me. It seems easier and neater to throw an exception and utilize some global error strings and pass some parameters rather than copy and paste messagebox.show() all the time, and modify the text to suit the situation. Another argument for me would be that both methods of exception handling utilize a messagebox, which stops code execution until the user does something. So i cant see the issue with the performance overhead.

Procedures And Exception Handling?

Aug 6, 2009

I initially posted this in the wrong forum. I need help getting this to run properly. I'm trying to construct a fractions calculator. In order to complete it, I need to do it like this:Using Select Case statements, four Function procedures should be called based on the operation selected. Each Function procedure will calculate the correct operation and return the Decimal value to the calling procedure. The original procedure will print the result.

Now, the result should be calculated to the hundreths place and the input values should be validated by a Try-Catch Block. And of course, I've been having trouble with how to do this. I've attempted many times and this is what I have so far:
