Generate A Virtual Disk / Path?

Mar 26, 2009

Is there some way to generate a virtual disk/path?My application needs to generate a lot of temporary small files, edit them, write to disk, execude old executables in Fortran, and read the text files outputs.I cannot choose to avoid the fortran, because is out of my power to decide it.all that I/O is really expensive, because disk access is slow. But all the files involved are really small (including the executable), so they may fit on a few megabytes of RAM, and I have gigabytes of RAM available (RAM is really cheap today).Worse, I cannot parallelize, because it forces me to multiply I/O operations (I need to create, edit, and delete lots of small files).The perfect solution would be to have a small virtual disk in memory.I cannot use a virtual PC software, because users would have a hard time installing it (they have problem using windows explorer even to do simple tasks).

Access A File Using Relative Path Or Virtual Path?

May 22, 2012

I am trying to read and display a file using MapPath as follows :

Response.ContentType = "Application/pdf"
Dim FilePath As String = MapPath("../Document/123.pdf")
Response.WriteFile(FilePath)
Response.End()

This procedure will work fine and display in the browser. However, if I save the file to C:Document123.pdf, how can I access this file using relative path in MapPath function. Is there an option to access the file which is saved out of IIS server? I am using vb.net 2003.

User Controls Virtual Path?

Nov 9, 2009

I'm having a bit of a problem with the web application I'm currently working on. In it there are a few Web User Controls that we use to display information on a bunch of different pages. They seem to compile alright and arent showing up any errors. The problem is trying to register them on other pages to access them is returning a 'file not found' error in visual studio (2005). I have them defined like this:

<%@ Register TagPrefix="cc2" TagName="ControlSelector" Src="~/components/controls/ControlSelector.ascx" %>

The strange thing is that when I remove the '~' from the front no error is shown but the path beomes ~//components/controls/ControlSelector.ascx when looking at the designer and obviously it cant find the control anyway.

Search The Local Disk For A File Type And Copy The Full Path To A New Location?

Feb 1, 2010

How can I search the local disk for a file type and copy the full path to a new location. I am trying to write a backup program that will copy all pst files to the server while maitaining the structure, so if there is a pst located in "C:pstuserpersonal1.pst" it would create the folder "\serverpstuserpersonal1.pst" and copy the file to the correct location. I would need it to do this for each pst on the hard drive no matter the location. The user running the program will not have admin rights, so it will need to skip files it cannot access.

VS 2010 Generate Image Path From Unique Name, What To Do With Invalid Chars

Apr 15, 2010

I'm creating a radio streaming application, which plays a live stream from various radio stations in a small 'gadget' like application.

The user can add his own custom radio stations, by supplying a Name, a StreamUrl and, optionally, an Image that represents a logo or something of that radio station.The logo will be drawn on the main form when that station is selected.

I need to be able to save these custom stations, and I think it makes sense to use an XML file, which could then look something like this

<CustomStations>
<Station>
<Name>Radio 1</Name>

[code]....

Before I added the support for images, this worked fine, how to store the images. I want the user to be able to select any image from his harddrive, but I don't want to force him to keep that image in the same location afterwards. So I can't rely on the path that he selected. Instead, I want to simply load the image from the path he selected, and then save it somewhere else.

I am storing the XML file in the common application data path which I think is a good place for the images too.The problem is, how to determine a name for the images? I will always have just one image per custom radio station, so it makes sense to me to simply have one Images folder that holds all images, with a unique name.I can see two solutions:

1. Generate a random filename for every image

2. Use the Name of the radio station as the image name

For option 1, I suppose I could just create a string of 16 random characters and call that the filename. The problem of course is that there is no guarantee that I will get a unique filename. Yes, the chances of generating the same name twice randomly are very tiny, but it's still possible, and I just don't like that. How can I ensure that my random filename is unique? I suppose I could always drop the whole thing in a While loop that continues when the new filename already exists, but there must be a better way... Is there nothing in the framework that allows me to generate a unique random filename, in a directory of my choice (so not in the Temp directory...)

I like option 2 much better. The Name of a radio station is unique (there can't be two stations with the same name), so I don't have to worry about filenames conflicting. The problem with this approach is that there are no restrictions on the name. There's nothing stopping the user from naming their custom station "Radio~/aij!""_.fe" or something like that, which is obviously not a valid filename... So, I will have to do 'something' to generate a valid filename from the station name. I could simply remove all non-valid path characters from the name, but then I am no longer guaranteed a unique filename... Suppose there's two stations, one called "Radio/1" and one "Radio1", then after removing the invalid "/" character, the names will be the same and so I will generate the same image path for both....

Interface And Graphics :: Drawing Dotted Path Lines, With Even Dots Along The Path Line?

Apr 13, 2012

Problem drawing dotted path lines, with even dots along the path line.I want to draw a path line that can be any shape (square, round, outline etc), and along this path line I want even dots to appear.

I also want to be able to resize the shape (as in the example attached)This is very easy to do using "DrawPath" and defining points for the path and using a pen defined as dots.The problem I have is I want the dots to be evenly placed along the path, on any shape or size I draw.In the example I have created, I create a square with 4 points and draw a dotted path.There are 2 buttons that allows me to resize the square (larger or smaller) this helps show the problem more clearly.

The path starts at the top left corner and finishes back at the top left corner, the dots are evenly placed along the path, except the final dots at the end of the path. (Sometimes the dots are even and other times they are not even).The shapes I want to draw can be any size and any shape, but I have used a square in this example to show the problem I have. point me in the direction I need to go that allows me to draw the dots and give the impression that they are even all along the path, for all shapes and sizes.

In the pictures below if you change the size of the shape, one will have even looking dots, the other will not.

Convert Unix File Path To Windows Path?

I'm using acrobat that returns unix paths instead of windows path's. So im wondering if there is a way in vb.net to convert the path to windows path.

i tried using:

docs(i) = javaScriptObj.path().ToString.Replace("/", "").Substring(1)
position = docs(i).IndexOf("")
docs(i) = docs(i).Substring(0, position) + ":" + docs(i).Substring(position + 1)

this only works on local files, but fails when im starting to use network drives.
