Get Private Working Set Of A Process

Nov 30, 2009

I want to get the Private Working Set of a process (as it shows in task manager), using the Process Class. I'm able to get the working set /1024, but this number does not match the number I am looking for. Is the Process class capable of doing this?

The problem occurs as soon as I physically close the spawned process; I get a message from windows saying that "Process X has stopped working." If I kill the process programmatically in the calling .NET application, all is well.

Working With System.Diagnostics.Process?

Dec 22, 2010

I am tring to build network toolkit for my very computer illiterate techs. What I am trying to accomplish is to embed a command prompt of sorts in a form. I have been sucessful to a point. Here are my main two problems.

1: I cannot read line by line as the output of the process is generated. Rrather I have to wait untill its complete, this is ok for "IPConfig and Maybe "Ping". But for longer diag tests this would take too long and it would look like the app has crashed. So I need to figure out how to redirect the output of the process to my text control.

2: I would like to have the ability to redirect keyboard input to the process. For telnet as an example. I would capture all keyboard commands while my text control has focus and send them to the process and with the problem solved I should be able to establish 2-way IO with the process. Is there a way to do this or am I barking up the wrong tree.

Windows - Changing The Working Directory For A Process Remotely

Mar 29, 2010

I've got an application that has a bug right now, but we're unable to update the end-user to get the fix out. What a possible workaround would be is to change the working directory to the application's install directory, but from what I can tell, there's no way to do that outside of the program itself.

Visual Studio 2003 - Macro - Process.Attach Not Working Always

The first time use the macro, it works fine. Each subsequent time, even after I detach from the process, the .Attach() doesn't seem to do anything. The same thing happens as I step through the macro... the proc.Attach() gets called on the correct process, but nothing happens. One note: when viewing the process in the Processes window, the Type column for my process shows ".NET, Win32".

File Not Closing - Process Was Working Fine Prior To Adding The Code?

Feb 22, 2012

I'm reading a file and then closing it with the following code, but my problem is later when I start a batch process it says the file is still in use. Am I doing something wrong in closing it? The process was working fine prior to my adding this code to read the file.

[code]...

This rexx exec is trying to write to the file that I read from in the prior step before creating a PowerPoint presentation, but fails becuase of the lock.I'm at a loss. I should qualify and say the process actually starts, but fails in the rexxexec after it starts, it isn't failing on the process start the rexx exec issues a message that it can't write to the file becuase it is in use.

VS 2005 Windows Services - Process Is Listed As A SYSTEM Process Rather Than A Process Under User Name

The problem i have is that even though the service launches notepad, the actual notepad it self is NOT visible. I know that it has been launced because i can see the process in the task manager. By the way the process is listed as a SYSTEM process rather than a process under my user name (i believe that is because my process is a "LocalSystem" one).

I want the process.start to run in the background so if users click in my main app it responds and truly that they can access the context menu of my main app from the taskbar while the process.start is running.

VS 2010 Launching New Process & Detecting If That Process Has An Error Message

Nov 19, 2011

I am working on a small VB application that listens for commands sent from an Android app.

One of the functions is to extract an archive. I am familiar with how to listen for the unrar process to finish, so I can display a progressdialog on the phone while the extraction is happening, and clear it as soon as it's done.

BUT ... if there is an error/alert from WinRAR, WaitForExit() never gets called because WinRAR is still sitting there open until I click "OK" on the MsgBox.

For Example ... if you try to extract a file that is not actually an archive... an alert will pop up saying "No Archives Found", and basically everything is halted on the VB app and the Android app, and the Android app just sits on a progressdialog saying "extracting..." until you manually hit "OK" on the computer.

As you can imagine, this is a problem if the whole point of your app is to NOT have to go over to the computer.

So... I am wondering if there is something similar to WaitForExit() that will wait for an error and allow me to close out the alert and let the process end.

Here's my Sub for the UnRar command:

Private Sub UnRar(ByVal WorkingDirectory As String, ByVal filepath As String)
Dim objRegKey As RegistryKey
objRegKey = Registry.ClassesRoot.OpenSubKey("WinRARShellOpenCommand")

[2005] Using Process.MainWindowTitle,Process.MainWindowHandle On Some Older VB6 Applications

Feb 10, 2009

I have an issue using Process.MainWindowTitle,Process.MainWindowHandle on some older VB6 applications. After Process.Start I use Process.MainWindowTitle to display in a listbox. The MainWindowTitle returned is not the Window Title but in fact the Project name of the VB6 exe.? I also store the MainWindowHandle to use the ShowWindow and SetForeGroundWindow API's. It would appear that the ShowWindow API does not work, but the SetForegroundWindow does. ie: if the VB6 app is minimized, showwindow does not restore, if it is NOT minimized setforewgroundwindow sets it to the foreground. The exact same code does work correctly for any other .net exe or notepad, only on these vb6 programs I am having a problem.

Passing Variables From Child Process To Parent Process

Feb 13, 2012

I have a procedure (parent process) that starts several processes (child processes). The child processes calculate several array variables. How can I pass those arrays to the parent process? At the moment, the child processes write the arrays to a streambuilder and the parent process reads the stream. Is there a better way to do it? Is it possible to have the child processes write to RAM memory and have the parent process read from there? It is like declaring a global variable in the parent process and give the child processes access to it.
