I'm tutoring a student in VB 2010 at a local college.i'm trying to explain to the student that he needs to learn the technique or art of knowing how to start coding in VB to accommodate a simple forms program. Is there a name or term that is used to describe the thought process a programmer goes through to convert what the user is expecting into the code that needs to be implemented to accomplish the task?A simple example is a form with a textbox on it and an OK button. When the user clicks the OK button, the program should check the textbox to make sure it is a number and not alphanumeric. The student I am tutoring has a hard time knowing what the first line of code should be to make that kind of test.He has a problem translating what needs to be done into code.I was wondering if anybody knows what that is called and if there is anything written about it.

2. How to get element by id in WebClient Class.
3. I am trying to make a program that will read stats of a website from Alexa. How can I make a code that will read Alexa Traffic Rank if code looks like this:

I have written a little code to send email using System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient based on examples that I have found online. The code takes e-mail address, subject, body text and even attachment from my form, send the e-mail and sendsme a confirmation.
Initially I had some problems because I was using async but when I reverted to simple send it worked great.
I now have a need to send multiple e-mails (purely legitimate use - newsletters & information updates to registered clients). My solution was to loop through a dataset passing the necessary variables (e-mail address, clients name & personalised body text) to my e-mail routine. It sort of works but I repeatedly get a delivery failure message "The Operation has timed out"
Public Sub emailit(ByVal eto, ByVal efrom, ByVal esubject, ByVal ebody, ByVal ettach)
Dim email_to As String
Dim email_from As String

I am using this editor for the users to enter their text in the database interface environment that will both load/save/show them what they are working on in the form and also mail-merge into a Word document waiting for the content. I can do the first step and it works well, but how do I get MS Word to recognize HTML as formatting instead of just merging in tags and text all as text?
The tool has two relevant properties: one to get just the text (no markup, i.e. no HTML) and one to get the full markup with HTML. Both of these are in text format (which I use for easy storage in the Database).
ideas/directions I can think of:
1) use the clipboard. I can copy/paste the content straight from the editor window to Word and it works great! But loading from a database is significantly different, even when using the clipboard programatically. (maybe I don't understand how to use the clipboard tools)
2) maybe there is a library or class/function in Word that can understand the HTML as "mergable" content?
how i can write a realy basic e-mail program. all the program will need to do is recieve mails show the mail in a tekstbox and the subject in an other text box.or if you can tell me how i can let vb read things on my screen...
View 1 RepliesI have a piece of code which sends email with an attachment from my application. The code uses MAPI to send the email. It opens up a new email message so the user can add to the email message, and then the user clicks send. The code works fine. However there is one small problem. The email that the code opens, is always in Microsoft Outlook. Sometimes the application's user has Outlook Express set up as the default client, but my application always opens the new email message in Microsoft Outlook. (Outlook 2003. In the one user's machine that has Outlook 2007, everything works fine and the email opens up in Outlook Express.)As I searched for a solution, I saw this problem posed many times in various places on the Internet, with no solution (or none that worked). I did try several suggestions which involved creating registry settings and registering some dlls.
View 4 RepliesI am teaching myself vb.net and wanted to change this code to have an embedded mail.boby from a text file instead of the file attachment. Code spippet below and where I need help is mail.Body = ("tracertALL.txt")
that just puts the name of the file NOT the contents of the file. This code is a CMDWrapper that runs a batch file and I want the contents of a trace route that is pipe to a file >> tracertALL.txt .

I am trying to have letter templates (word documents) that are stored in sql server VarBinary(max) to be accessed via a web application where they will be edited and saved back to sql server by directors of our company. Then various managers will be able to select an existing template (word document), make any additions, and mail merge with a list of customers to print or save the letters.
I am looking to open up word within a web page much like you would an email in outlook, edit it with spell check and the like, and then save it back in sql server. I am able to get word to open from a file but it is outside of the web application in a separate word document. I am storing the word document in sql server but am unable to open it in word without having to save it to a disk (why should you have to go to a disk for viewing or editing?). I am able to programmatically mail merge but that is in a separate word application.
I am finding bits and pieces on the web but nothing that will pull things together such as embedding word but in a windows app not a web app. Mail merge from a file not from a database, converting a byte array to word in a directory but not on a web page.
I'm trying to update some older software which uses the now-declared-obsolete System.Web.Mail classes.Unfortunately, I don't really know a heck of a lot about email, so I'm looking for advice.

From what I can tell, this should be configuring some kind of sending option. I can kind of work out what's going on, but I don't know how I should go about re-implementing it.It's looking like the place to be putting this stuff is now in the System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient.Credentials class, but the information in there doesn't seem to bear any resemblance to what I have here.I'm almost certain I'm making some obvious error, here, but I can't see it. Can someone tell me what I should be doing?
