Global Try-catch For Loading Pages In Asp.net?

May 1, 2012

What I got:

SecureBasePage.vb (to be inherited by pages that require to login)
Default.aspx which inherits SecureBasePage

What should be the case: client requests Default.aspx but gets redirected to login because he isn't logged in.

SecureBasePage.vb has this constructor
Public Sub ()
If userIsAuthenticated Then

[code]....

This results in a exception LoginException. Now I want to let it being catched by a somehow global exception handler which kicks the client to login.aspx.I know there is a function Application_Error() in Global.asax but in my opinion this isn't an exception handler as it only takes the Server.GetLastError() and doesn't catch the exception. So more likely this function is to allow a developer to send an email about the unhandled exception. I'd call this a 'global unhandled exception handler' instead of an 'global exception handler'.Is there anything I can kinda try-catch to catch the constructors exception throwing?

MDI Global Error Handling - Nothing In Try Catch Block

Nov 21, 2008

I normally use the following for global error handling:
Code:
Dim currentDomain As AppDomain = AppDomain.CurrentDomain
AddHandler currentDomain.UnhandledException, AddressOf MYExceptionHandler
AddHandler Application.ThreadException, AddressOf MYThreadHandler
I normally don't have a MDI application, and When I force an error, neither of the events get fired. I don't have anything in a try catch block. How do I do this with a MDI application?

Use Global.asax To Catch Missing PDFs?

Sep 16, 2010

I'm trying to use the Global.asax file in the root application of the website to catch requests for pdf files in the root that don't exist any more. I've configured iis to send pdf requests to asp.net. The whole thing works perfectly on development. It also works on the live system with missing .aspx pages, but not .pdf. Instead an "Error Code 64: Host not available". I'm using the Global.asax file to avoid the web.config and child applications (1.1 & 2.0) inheriting settings.[code]...

Try / Catch In Global.asax While Logging Errors To Db Needed?

Nov 3, 2010

So I handle all exceptions in my project within my Global.asax page. For example, on a random page I could have:[code]So my question is in the Application_Error method, do I need the try/catch block when trying to write to the database? I'm thinking I would in case something goes wrong with the connection, etc. - but is this really necessary? Also, what would I do in the catch block if there is an error? At that point I would be catching the error of logging an error which is confusing in its own right.

.net - Try Catch Finally Blocks.. Do I Still Need Them When Handling Errors In The Global.asax

Jun 2, 2010

I am handling errors via my global.asax in this method:

Dim CurrentException As Exception
CurrentException = Server.GetLastError()
Dim LogFilePath As String = Server.MapPath("~/Error/" & DateTime.Now.ToString("dd-MM-yy.HH.mm") & ".txt")
Dim sw As System.IO.StreamWriter = New System.IO.StreamWriter(LogFilePath)

[code]....

In my code I currently have no other error handling. Should I still insert try, catch, finally blocks?

Loading Value Into Global Variable

When "Setup Option" is loaded the first time I have written 2 values into 2 textboxes using My. Settings and on form Closing it does work, if I re-open "Setup Option" form I can see the 2 values in the textboxes E.g.: txtGst.text=5, txtPst.text=6.5, so good so far. Now what I would like is to be able to use the contains of them 2 textboxes and place them into global variables, I already have a Module "modGlobals.vb".

Launching Web App - How To Prevent Pages From Loading Without Prompt

Sep 7, 2011

I am using VB.Net and VS 2008 to develop my web app. When I launch the app, pretty much all the pages get loaded (by that I mean the page_load event is triggered). This happens even for pages that I created. When this happens, the app throws some errors (if a particular value has not been loaded from the database) and thus results in javascript errors (yellow icon at the bottom of IE). How can I figure out "what" is causing the pages to load, and how can I prevent the pages from being loaded without code-prompting.

Error - Catch Cannot Catch Type 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.Exception'

Mar 25, 2011

I have a program in VB.Net that receives mails from Outlook, extracts attachments and inserts the attachments into a table through a query. I would like to put the query/queries in a Try/Catch block, but cannot do so as Outlook exceptions cannot be caught, and it gives me an error, and unless I put a very specific exception, I cannot catch it. Is there a workaround?

Edit:

Try
Catch ex As Exception
End Try

Exception is underlined and when I hover on it, it says: "Catch cannot catch type 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.Exception' because it is not in 'System.Exception' or a class that inherits from 'System.Exception'". This is affecting all my other code which I'd like to put into a Try/Catch block.

I used to use just an IF THEN statement, but now that doesn't work in these new .NET pages. Here's the end of the code that I am having difficulties with:

Make Html Pages Work Like Aspx Pages?

Jun 19, 2009

I have heard of setting server specs to have HTML pages parsed as PHP pages by changing the .htaccess or httpd.conf files. Is there a similar solution to have HTML pages parsed as ASPX pages?

A website I am working on does not want their PageRank to lower since their HTML pages are already indexed and used on other websites but wants to use some dynamic features of aspx pages (like include the navigation file so that changes to the nav will only have to be done in that one file).

Catch Log4net Exceptions / Use Try / Catch Approach

Jan 23, 2012

I need to catch log4net exceptions (its own exceptions not app exceptions logged by it). I wish there's a way of doing it this way: [code] I have this code implemented and there's no errors in compilation but i force log4net to have an error (pointing to a non existing database in the config file) and nothing is threw.I've tried the listener aproach: [code] and it's writing the errors to log4net.txt, the forced ones i mean. This last aproach has a couple of drawbacks: it won't append every error to the file, if the error is the same it doesn't write it, i can't get the listener to write every error to that file, only one (I don't know how to fully configure the trace listener, it might be that). Thus it won't append the date and hour to every line wich is a necesity for me. Finally i can't give structure to it (xml). Even if the listener work i need to use the try/catch aproach, since i'm using ExceptionHandling from Enterprise library to log the errors in my app.

Try/Catch - "Don't Catch Exceptions That You're Not Willing To Deal With"

Apr 20, 2010

A few weeks back in reply to a thread, I said then that it's sometimes worse to use a Try/Catch when there's nothing in the Catch! There are exceptions to that I'm sure, but too often the Try/Catch is used with a blank Catch that makes even the developer scratch their heads when the program crashes because they have nothing to go on (by their own doing).DevExpress (and I'm a big fan of their stuff) has a little three minute video that encapsulates that concept well and I thought that you all might enjoy watching it:[URL]

C# - Use Case For Try-catch-finally With Both Catch And Finally

Feb 17, 2010

I understand how try-catch works and how try-finally works, but I find myself using those (usually) in two completely different scenarios:

try-finally (or using in C# and VB) is mostly used around some medium-sized code block that uses some resource that needs to be disposed properly.
try-catch is mostly used either

around a single statement that can fail in a very specific way or (as a catch-all) at a very high level of the application, usually directly below some user interface action.

In my experience, cases where a try-catch-finally would be appropriate, i.e., where the block in which I want to catch some particular exception is exactly the same block in which I use some disposable resource, are extremely rare. Yet, the language designers of C#, VB and Java seem to consider this to be a highly common scenario; the VB designers even think about adding catch to using.

Or am I just overly pedantic with my restrictive use of try-catch?

EDIT: To clarify: My code usually looks like this (functions unrolled for clarity):

Try
do something
Aquire Resource (e.g. get DB connection)
Try

[Code]....

which just seems to make much more sense than putting any of the two catches on the same level as finally just to avoid indentation.

Get MDI Child In Tab Pages?

Apr 7, 2011

I have a program developed in VB.NET (2008) which consists of a MDI form and several child forms. It worked like a normal mdi application whereby mdi form acted like a container for child forms and things worked out okay. Code like Me.Mdichildren or Me.ActiveMdiChild etc could be used to get list of child forms etc.

Now what happened is I needed to implement a tabbed system. There will be multiple tabs and forms would be in those tabs. So I added a Tab control in mdi form and now new forms are added to selected tab page. This way muliple tab pages can host forms and there is no need to see all childforms at once. But a problem has come up. I do say ChildForm.MdiParent = Me (as before) but then I say TabPage1.Controls.Add(ChildForm). Doing so functions like list of mdi children or me.activemdichild or auto arrange options like Cascade,Tile Horizontal, Vertical etc are not working.
