I am working asp.net vb application. I have set of values to be inserted to Database.But their some fields are optional to be filled. I need to check the textbox empty. If empty I should not enter the value to Database. How to work on this?
View 4 RepliesIve created one database Sql Server Compact Edition 2005, with one table ("Cliente") I know that I can created my database good, but i have a problem saving information since three textbox, in my table(With columns "Nombre" "Apellido" "Cliente". In my form there is a button save ("Guardar"). When I do click in my button appear the next message : "The column cannot contain null values. [ Column name = Nombre,Table name = Cliente ] " and happen the same with apellido and Id_Cliente. And this happen becouse my code cant save the information....

I have a form and stored procedure that inserts the data from the form. It works fine except that if a field isn't filled in it doesn't insert a NULL into SQL it inserts "".
I've tried a few different ways but none seem to insert NULL, the one below still inserts "", can anyone point me in the right direction?

So if I enter nothing into address1 field it should write NULL to screen but it always writes NOT NULL. What does an empty form field equal? in classic ASP it was always "".
I am looping thorugh a datatable and and printing each row to the console and I keep on getting a dbnull error. I inserted an if statement in my loop to try and catch it, but I can't seem to get it to work.

i am working in windows appl vb.net 08. And i am working in Access DataBase.I have one Table Called "Person" . In this "Person" Table one Column Name Called "OtherName". In this Column binded in one of the Combobox in a Form.But the Problem is "OtherName" Column having the Null Values.Before i bind this Column to Combobox i want to convert this NULL Values to String. I select the date that the customer brings the returned item by selecting a datepicker. The calculation works fine, but i want to insert 3 values into my database under column names that i already have.
The table name is Trnsaction. it has the following coloumn names: Trnsaction_id Member_id Album_id issue_date return_date members_date days_delayed fine The last 3 coloumns(members_date ,days_delayed ,fine) are values i wish to add to my database. I noticed that when I try to use this I don't get any "null" errors when processing values from a database.

Could you explain why using or not using .ToString make the difference?
Also is it always good to include .ToString and does it make the program execute slower?
Maybe there is a document that tells use the best time to use .ToString?

View 2 RepliesNow that I've switched over to parameterized queries, everything is great except along with handling all the special characters that would otherwise disrupt an all text SQL stament, it's handling the word NULL. My code basically does this for every variable used in the entire SQL statement:

and that worked great for my old all text ones because leaving the word NULL out of single quotes would tell it yeah, that's actually null and pass it a true null value. Now with parameterized ones, it's literally passing it the word NULL I tried just leaving the string empty but then when I try to execute the command, it says that the parameter cannot be a zero length string. So how do you give a null value to a a parameterized query and make it actually send that to the database in the statement? Would strCallName = vbNull work or would it still say it's a zero length string?
