How To Patch Bug In Executable Without Recompiling It

Nov 14, 2011

I have written a VB.Net program however there is a bug in one of the methods. I would like to fix the bug but I don't want to change the original executable. I know I can override a referenced assembley using a configuration file, but is there a similar method to override a method in my executable? I have reasons for not recompiling the original executable.

Create A Patch System Which Patches The Entire Executable?

Sep 1, 2010

I want to create a patch system which patches the entire executable. So like: You download my patch and it changes the code of the existing executable instead of replacing it. the reason why: I got an application which is already around the ~15MB and it will grow bigger (Like 200~300MB) so, I want to keep it compact.I've already read that patching an executable for only a string is quite easy, but, I got my doubts about actual code and resources.

VB 2010 Recompiling Corrupted Code

Jul 18, 2009

I've been getting wierd errors due to what appears to be compiler side errors, based on a corrupted compile that the compiler keeps using until i do something drastic like copy an entire module or function into noteback text editor, save my code, restart VB 2010, and paste it back in.[code]you may ask yourself, why do i even bother having the select case statement in the loop?c1 never gets high enough in the loop for your select case statement do anything (case: 99999, moreover u make c1 = itself, so there is no change in c1's value) The answer is that at one point i was making the select case statement do something, but when i tried to delete the entire select case statement, execution would simply fall through the loop.The for loop would only execute once.It would only do this with "optimizations enabled" outside of the debugger.Inside the debugger it worked fine, but every time outside of the debugger it would only execute once UNLESS i kept the meaningless select case statement in there.

Then, not wanting to see it there any more, i tried deleting the entire function (copying the text to notepad), recompiled (delete the calling line for the function), saved, exited, restarted systems (tried restarting system many times b4, but not b4 doing all this), opened VB, delete the select case statement out of notepad, copied the edited function from notepad to VB, recompiled and magically it finally worked.Understanding a little about optimization at machine lvl coding it appears the next c1 was optimized out by the compiler, instead using the end select statement to loop back to the top of the for loop.However, upon deleting the select case statement, it never reintroduced a loop back at the "next c1" statement, casuing execution to fall through.i've noticed this error occur about half dozen times (in other forms: by error i mean the comiler saving an optimization, but when the code that prompted the optimization is deleted, the compiler is not able to properly undo the optimization) while building my program, and my suggestion (rather than hunting down each of these errors), is to force the compiler to rethink the logic of of the program from scratch (which is what i thought it did already everytime i hit compile), but these experiments make me think its saving an error some where that only copying the function to note-pad and back again could make it purge.

Deployment :: Can An Executable Program Create An Executable File

May 17, 2012

I have a program that outputs a file. I want the user to be able to just double-click the output file and launch the program, just like Word and Excel. In Word for instance, one doesn't necessarily have to open WORD then click on File--> Open and locate another Word doc. He can just go to the folder and open the Word doc. I want to implement the exact scenario in my program.

So far I have tried creating TextFile and added it to the Resources. On FormLoading, I simply I stream-read the Resouce file, but I can't write to the Resource on FormClosing, since the Resource is ReadOnly. Also, the Resource is built & compiled so I suppose you can't add anything to it at run time.How you lunch an output file without launching the Executable program that created it?

Executable On Vista - Open The Executable It Goes To A "WindowsApplication1?

Jun 1, 2009

I have an executable that I was able to get working on all XP machines by registering all the .dll's associated with it.On Vista, however, I go through the exact same registration process but right when I open the executable it goes to a "WindowsApplication1 has stopped working" dialog. I registered the DLLs in the SysWOW64 folder. I also ran Dependency Walker which came up with IEFrame.dll as flagged, don't know if that is relevant though.

Deployment :: Make Patch Maker Binary Differential Update?

Feb 22, 2010

any1 has any ideas on how to code a patch maker, (binary differential update) so when i run my patch maker, it output a program (*.exe) that will update files on another machine or local machine, assuming that old files to be updated to a new file having the same data in result;

and also the output patcher should be smaller in size (compressed)currently wad i could think of is a very very simple one but totally useless and not efficient and result large file size patch

1. where mine is read both file data
2. is both byte the same ?
3. [if not same ----> write down the marker value in outputfile1 and byte value in outputfile2]
3. [if same ----> do nothing]
4. read byte if available
5. (marker + 1)

the marker value is how many byte have been advanced so with resulting patcher will read those marker values to advance to the file address (which is the position number) and update accordingly to its byte value outputfile1 is marker values, outputfile2 is byte values corresponding to outputfile1 marker value to advance to the byte position

Generate Executable From An Executable?

Jul 24, 2011

I Actually want to provide a new service which requires creating executables on the fly from executables generated in vb.net. For example lets say I have a form with a textbox and in that textbox we pass an argument which is for example the serial of the product, then we have a button which once clicked will generate an executable on the fly which has also a textbox requiring that serial to run? That was only an example but the main thing is how to generate that exe on the fly.

.net - Cant Run Executable On .Net Framework 2.0?

Jun 4, 2011

My problem is simple I have my application which was perfectly executing under framework 2.0, but recently I upgraded my code to add few lines.

ServicePointManager.DnsRefreshTimeout = 500
ServicePointManager.DefaultConnectionLimit = 100
ServicePointManager.EnableDnsRoundRobin = False
ServicePointManager.MaxServicePointIdleTime = 1000
ServicePointManager.SetTcpKeepAlive(False, 500, 500)

Now when I comment these, the application is executed flawlessly, but when included program requires Framework 2.0 SP2 upgrade, I searched MSDN for this but looks like this is available from Framework 1.1

I dont want my users to upgrage to SP2 for such minor things but cant also remove this from my code, Is there an alternate to achieve similar ServicePointManager settings without a Framework Upgrade?

IDE :: Get Executable Running?

Jan 13, 2011

Firstly I'm not a programmer and do not pretend to be one. I just enjoy killing some spare time I've been usining Visual Basic (started with VS2005 and now onto VS2010) to develop a program. Up until now I've been happy to plod along running the progam from the development environment. However, I recently was asked by an colleague if they could have a copy of the program to use.Therefore I opted to create an executable file for him to use. The problem is that whislt the executable file runs fine on my machine (Win 7) where VS2010 is installed, it does not deploy correctly on his machine (XP pro). Following is the message that I get:See the end of this message for details on invoking just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

The code below is real code I have rewritten many times but to no avail. If I leave out the part where I convert the bytes to string and just copy the binary and create a new exe with the binary the program works. Executing Another Executable File From VB?

Sep 15, 2010

I'm trying to make a program that has command buttons, each running a different file. I have added some files so far, but I encountered a problem with a couple of them.

For example, I want to run Zuma's Revenge! right from the program, but it is not working. If I run the game from outside the program, it runs perfectly, but when I try running it from the program, it keeps saying "Zumas Revenge! - Adventure has stopped working."

What really confused me, is that the game is running normally if I run it from its folder or by using the shortcut, while from the program it isn't.I'm using Windows 7, with Visual Basic 2010 Express.

'Here's the code I'm using:

Private Sub Zumas_Revenge_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Zumas_Revenge.Click
Process.Start(My.Application.Info.DirectoryPath & "umas Revenge! - AdventureumasRevengeAdventure.exe")
End Sub
