I'm currently using this all throughout my application for things such as verifying if a control's EditValue actually has a value. I was wondering if I have missed any scenarios where a value would not be available, missing, non-existent, blank, etc., and how would I incorporate in my procedure.

I have default.aspx used masterpage, in master page i have a control called DefaultMenuContent, this control have a dropdownlist with autopostback, the problem is loosing the selection even if i use Is Not PostBack in control's load event, how to persist the dropdownlist selection?

I am trying to verify that a string contains nothing but known values. In this case, I need to make sure it contains only "Shift", "Control", or "Alt", but not necessarily all of those. For example, these should be true: "Shift + P", "Shift + Control + H", "Alt + U; but these should not: "Other + P", "Shift + Fake + Y", "Unknown + Shift + E" etc.This is the code I tried to use:

I have a string: Dim strXMLTags As String = "<tags><test>1</test></tags>" And I want to verify that all opening tags have a closing tag in the proper place. So if I put the previous string through, it'd work. However, if I put: Dim strXMLTags As String = "<tags><test>1</test>" Then I want it to give me an error. Is there an XML structure checker or something of the sorts? Or should I just try and load it to an XML document and if it errors then, then I know.

With the format on the mtb set to LL-000, i don't need to worry about the numbers. I have a script that attempts to load XML text from a URL and I am having difficulty figuring out how to check to see if it is valid, normalized XML. I don't have a schema as there are several variables which could change the XML format, I just want to check to make sure all of the opening tags are closed properly so I can verify that the entire string loaded properly.

Something is wrong with this function. It verifies the first word of string. After that it doesn't return anything.
I am working on finishing up a mvc 3 vb.net app... I have to parse about 2000 entries in a database and get the string value to the right of a " : " delimiter from one of the columns... Everything to the left I am not worried about but I need the value that is to the right of the colon for that item.. I have more issues involving needing to select string characters to the right or left of a delimiter... But if someone can show me how to achieve the above I can figure out the rest from there...

I bought acheap USB barcode reader so i could play around with some hypothetical situations. I've managed to get a good chunk of stuff worked out, and had alot of fun along the way. But i thought to myself what if the same tag is passed back along the chain due to production defects and requires remaking.
When it returns to the station to be retagged complete, how do i set the condition for it to search to see if the bar code string already exists in the database prior to either adding a new row (if if returns negative) or to append a cell in the table if the search retuens a positive result.

Updates: I got the code to build by following the help received here, and then I had forgot the As Return Type (which got me a MarshalDirectiveException PInvokeRestriction). Then I had an assertion failure inside my DLL, which lead to an SEHException. Once fixed, this works BEAUTIFULLY. There are newsgroups where people are saying this can not be done, that VB only loads managed dll assemblies (which I guess is the normal thing most VB users are used to).

My application has a variable VAR_1 that is boolean, this name is also stored in database.
Now I need to set VAR_1 value in my app by reading database and asign x value,
How do I call VAL_1 from a string?, this is:

This is probably a dumb question but I have to call one of 30 or so global variables by constructing the variable name to be called from another information. However when i do that it treats it as a string. Any ideas on how to make this work?eg something like this:

Is it possible to read a string and call the method of the same name?For example: I have many buttons and if the user presses the button named A1, I want the Sub AI() to be called. I don't want to do an explicit If-Then for each button. Rather a common ONCLICK method that is called by all buttons and another method (the same name as the name of the button) is called.
Example:
