How To Check Files In A FTP Directory
Jan 17, 2011
I have this code:
Code: Try
Dim ftp As FtpWebRequest = DirectCast(WebRequest.Create("ftp://programserver@flyingpc.co.uk/german/" & TextBox1.Text & "activate"), FtpWebRequest)
ftp.Credentials = New NetworkCredential("programserver", "Language-123")
ftp.Method = WebRequestMethods.Ftp.ListDirectory
[Code]...
I know this sounds really weak how I am writing this but I cant find any better way to try and explain it. If someone could even just send me in the right direction,

I want to have a windows application that would check a specific folder for any files, and if there are any files I will run some code to each file, I was going to use a timer and set it to refresh every 15 seconds or so but I am not sure if there are any other ways to do this that would not take up as much resources.

I'm copying over some files to a target directory on a daily basis.Before I move the new files over, I'd like to delete the old files under the target folder, possibly using System.IO.Directory.Delete()But my problem is, the target folder is on a public drive where everybody in the company could access, and I don't want to empty the folder while someone else might be using those files.I'm thinking whether there's a Class that check the status on the files in a specific directory before I come in and delete everything.(I know I would get an IOException if I disregard the status of the files and try to delete them)

I am going to need to create a windows form for work that we can connect to a database table, select a directory and move files from the directory that are in the table and move to another folder. The directory will have sub directories that I need to search for the file name and move. I would like to have the table hold the file name (or path) and move all files that are in the database. There might be 20 files or 1000. Depends on the client we are processing for.

I have a SQL Server table with a list of files (path + filename), and a folder with multiple layers and files in each layer. I'm looking for a way to reconcile the two without having to process the list twice. Currently, I'm doing this:
For Each f as FileInfo In FileListFromDatabase
If f.Exists is False, mark it as deleted in the database
Next
[Code]....
Is there a better way to do this? I'd like to avoid converting all the matching files (of which most will be) to FileInfo objects twice. Since I'm a T-SQL developer first, I'm picturing something like an OUTER JOIN of the two lists where they don't match. Something LINQ-ish?

My thought is to use CreateFile from kernel32 and check for sharing violations. I believe this will work because I watched the file system activity with Process Monitor while issuing a rename command from CMD that I knew would fail and the last activity was a failed CreateFile call that resulted in a sharing violation.This is the Process Monitor information on the call.
Desired Access: Read Attributes, Delete, Synchronize
Disposition: Open
Options: Synchronous IO Non-Alert, Open Reparse Point
Attributes: n/a
ShareMode: Read, Write, Delete
AllocationSize: n/a
Using this VB code, I produced a call which gave the same information in Process Monitor but did not cause the sharing violation.
CreateFile(theDirectoryPath, _
FILE_READ_ATTRIBUTES Or DELETE Or SYNCHRONIZE, _
FILE_SHARE_READ Or FILE_SHARE_WRITE Or FILE_SHARE_DELETE, _
[code]....
The constants are pulled from various MSDN and pinvoke.net sources.If I call the above code recursively on all subfolders it will eventually cause the sharing violation, but when CMD refused to rename, it did not recurse. Yes, I know I could just try and catch the exception. But the point at which I want to know if the directory can be renamed and the point at which I want to rename the directory are not the same.

I can't seem to work this out... I've got a program that references a network path. The problem is that the network files are not found when I run the program from various computers. If I have the user navigate to the network path directoy and then run the program it works perfectly.
The problem is that whenever the machine is restarted I run into the same problem and have to manually navigate to that path before the program will be able to find the files.
I then tried several checks to see if the directory exists but it's not working.
Public Sub FillListBox()
If My.Computer.FileSystem.DirectoryExists("\AB eamportalShared%20DocumentsJustin%27s%20AppsFeedback") Then

I have a security timer to check if the directory exists which I want to access after it's been created by an external application, but what I have done doesn't seem to be the solution although it sounds like a very normal solution to me.
What I have done:
1) External application gets run which is going to create the directory
2) I set the variables to make the timer able to know what to check
3) My application needs to wait till the boolean variable gets set to true, so I put it in a
While:
vb.net
'Non existing files protection
While (Not bDirectoryExists)
If bDirectoryExists Then
Exit While 'In case it got created in the meanwhile
End If
If Not tmrFileCheck.Enabled Then
tmrFileCheck.Enabled = True
End If
End While
4) In my logic, the application should go out of the while now because the variable is set to true, and the code moves on, which never happens..

I'm having trouble finding a reliable method to check if a directory (folder) exists on an FTP server. I want to create new directories and then upload files into them but thought it best to check if the directory already exists. Although attmepting to create a directory that already exists does not seem to cause any errors, it does waste a bit of time.
This code reliably checks if a FILE exists:
[code...]
I have attempted to modify this with ListDirectory in place of GetDateTimestamp (to check if a directory exists) but it seems no exception is thrown whether the directory exists or not. I've done lots of Googling but haven't found a satisfactory answer.

I am trying to get the files in a directory and display them in a list box. I have that part working, but I would only like to show the files that are NOT hidden. I am currently using this:
Dim atts As FileAttribute = CheckDirectory.Attributes
If (atts And FileAttribute.Hidden) = FileAttribute.Hidden Then...
this is part of a for each loop.
But is there a way to only return the files that are not hidden, instead of having to check if they are?
I also need this to see how many files are in each directory so I don't have to count each file in each directory within the current folder. If I use the CheckDirectory.GetFiles().count, it counts the hidden files to.. A for each loop is just too slow..
