dim myCollection as new Specialized.StringCollection
dim myFoundThings as new ArrayList
dim index as Integer
dim newResultMemberName as String
[code]....
This is part of some code that will run without user interaction once it's spinning away, and I need to create a unique object from some items found in a StringCollection, naming the objects using information found in the strings stored in that StringCollection.

What I need to do is create comboboxes populated with values from a CSV for each class object selected from an Active Directory schema.
So lets say twelve classes are selected, the next form will display the class names in a checkedlistbox and will require twelve comboboxes for associating AD classes to CSV fields. Since the number of AD classes selected will always vary, is there a practical way to code it so that the objects can be instantiated from values stored in a variable?
Other languages support macro substitution, where the variable's value is interpreted as a literal at runtime. Developing in Visual Studio 2005, VB version 8 .netFramework 2.0xxx

I'm writing a tabbed web browser for someone who is learning VB.NET, and I have got to the point where I can add/remove browser controls into tab pages, controlled by one set of buttons on the main form, but I can't handle events from the WebBrowser objects.I have tried this but it says that 'DocumentTitleChanged' isnt an event of 'Control'...
Dim browser As New ArrayList
browser.Add(New WebBrowser)
browser(0).parent = TabControl1.SelectedTab
browser(0).dock = DockStyle.Fill
AddHandler browser(0).DocumentTitleChanged, TitleChangedHandler()
I want to update the tab title with the web page title when it changes. I started using a timer to update the tabs but there must be a way to add an event handler here.

I'm trying to decide whether to get a value, call it X, in my class through a read only property or through a function. Normally I'd code it as a property except in this case the GET involves doing a lookup to a sql table. So there's way more overhead than a simple RETURN X. So my question is, when I instantiate a new object from my class, are all the properties calculated at that point, so that the sql lookup will occur too? Or is the property only evaluated when I actually reference it in the calling code.

i wanted to do something simple that sort of replicate an object:
public function clone(byval realcopy as object) as object return new Control ' something like this works, however i want to return the type of realcopy, which may not be a control end function so i tried this:
public function clone(byval realcopy as object) as object
return new gettype(realcopy.gettype)
end function

I have an application which I am trying out on machines without mysql. The app runs fine on my local host however when I try to use the application on another machine I am getting the following error:
Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost (using password: YES)
Then I get a .net framework error
System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
I thought I had exported the DB but I was left with a mysql file which I placed in the bin directory.

I am trying to run a backgroundworker to load data from my DAL (which is available in another class). I want to keep the UI available and not have the "locked up" feel while the object is loading.When I create a simple backgroundworker and Sleep the UI stays responsive and my controls can be updated after the sleep. As soon as I replace the sleep with a call to instantiate the object from my DAL, the UI locks up. Is there someway I can instantiate this object using the background worked and keep the UI responsive?
When the situation object is instantiated it could take several seconds for it to load completely, during this time is when the UI is locked up... It does eventually load just fine.
Private WithEvents backWork As New BackgroundWorker()
Dim sit As Situation
Private Sub btnLoad_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.RoutedEventArgs) Handles btnLoad.Click

dim l as List(of MyClass) = new List(of MyClass) and I want to get the type of the objects contained in the list, how do I do that? The obvious answer, that doesn't seem to be possible from my actual implementation, would be to do something like this...
public function GetType(byval AList as IList(of GenericType)) as System.Type
dim lResult as system.type = nothing
if AList.Count > 0 then lResult = AList(0).GetType
return lResult
end function
But what if the list is empty and I still want to know the type it contains?

I have to make a VB project for one of my college Co-Sci classes. However, I am having issues doing what I think is logically possible. Part of our project entails creating a user defined class, then create a form that then instantiates an instance of the object type. After that we are to list the item in a listbox. That is all well and good and works fine.
What I need help with is looping through each object in the listbox, getting some data from the object, then moving to the next.
I have been trying something similar to c++. For example, an object contained in a c++ array can be accessed like this:
array[index].someObjectMethod().
How would someone do something similar to that for objects contained in a VB listbox? I imagine it starts something like this:
myListBox.Items(index).

I am writing a class library to interact with a domain Active Directory. In my object model, I have the following:
Domain;
Organizational Unit;
Group;
User.
In my Domain object, I have an Entries property and an Add() method.
public class Domain {
// The ReadOnlyDictionary<TKey, TValue> is a custom wrapper over an IDictionary.
public ReadOnlyDictionary<string, IDirectoryEntry> Entries { get; }
public void Add(IDirectoryEntry entry) {
Entries.Add(entry.Name, entry);
[Code] .....
For your information, I implemented the INotifyPropertyChanged interface to ease my life, but I don't seem to find a way to make it work the way I want. Perhaps am I not doing things right somehow, as for the location of different methods, I don't know. How can I make my Domain aware of a change that occured within one of its Entries, so that the TKey value is also changed? That is wanted because one could possibly add an entry, change its name meanwhile adding a new entry with the "old" name of the actual within entry, and cause a conflict, etc. In the end, causing the test to fail. But I'd like to make it pass like it actually is. Is there another better approach or workaround?

In C# .NET 3.5, is there a way to instantiate an object given its string name? For example, suppose I have a DLL (e.g., MyClass.DLL) which contains type MyClass. Is possible to write something like... Object myClass = SomeMethodToInstantiate("MyClass"); // ? Is it possible to do this in VB .NET 3.5?

I have a requirement where I need to have a "type safe" way of accessing property names, without actually instantiating an object to get to the property. To give an example, consider a method that takes as arguments a list of IMyObject and a string that represents a property name (a property that exists in IMyObject).
The methods implementation will take the list and access all the objects in the list using the property name passed... for some reason or another, we won't dwell on that!!
Now, I know that you can do this using an instantiated object, something like ...
Dim x as MyObject = nothing
Dim prop As PropertyInfo = PropHelper.GetProperty(Of MyObject)(Function() x.MyProperty)
Where my helper method uses reflection to get the name of the property as a string - there are numerous examples of this flying around on the web!
But I don't want to have to create this pointless object, I just want to do something like MyObject.MyProperty! Reflection allows you to iterate through a types properties and methods without declaring an object of that type... but I want to access a specific property and retrieve the string version of its name without iteration and without declaring an object of that type!
The main point here is that although I am trying to get the property name as a string... this is done at run time... at compile time, I want this to be type safe so if someone changes the property name, the compilation will break.

Limited to using v2.0 of .Net framework (we use VB.net) due to environmental constraints on our servers.I've got an ASP.net webpage which pulls data from a webservice that performs checks on user accounts in active directory. Operators can check multiple accounts at one time using the web interface. The webservice returns a list(of AccountCheck) objects which themselves contain single properties like username, email address, and List(of AccountError) objects which contain multiple properties.[code]What I want to do is using some kind of repeater, create multiple panels or divs which contain labels showing the username, email etc, and a gridview which has the accounterror list bound to it to show all the errors. The users could be checking 2, 5, 7 accounts at once, and is dynamic.

I am trying to create an object browser similar to what VS2010 uses for the quick watch window. I can use reflection to iterate through the properties and display their names and values until I get to the point in an object where the property is an object of my own creation and not a system type. I can't seem to find the correct approach to be able to iterate the properties of these "sub objects".
Below is the just of what I am trying to do
Public class myClass
property myprop a string

I have a managed class that uses a COM that looks like this.
[Code]....
Since I am using an unmanaged dll through a COM-Interob dll I am wondering if I need free the innerobj manually or if the gc is smart enough to do it automagically if I call ReleaseObject() My class implements IDisposable and I do the following atm: Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal.ReleaseComObject(myobj) Do I need to take care of releasing all inner objects that are created by the COM Object or not? And If I do have to do it, does the order matter (first inner then parent vs parent then inner)?

So I've created a series of objects that interact with a piece of hardware over a serial port. There is a thread running monitoring the serial port, and if the state of the hardware changes it updates properties in my objects. I'm using observable collections, and INotifyPropertyChanged.
I've built a UI in WPF and it works great, showing me real time updating when the hardware changes and allows me to send changes to the hardware as well by changing these properties using bindings.
What I'm hoping is that I can run the UI on a different machine than what the hardware is hooked up to without a lot of wiring up of events. Possibly even allow multiple UI's to connect to the same service and interact with this hardware.
So far I understand I'm going to need to create a WCF service. I'm trying to figure out if I'll be able to pass a reference to an object created at the service to the client leaving events intact. So that the UI will really just be bound to a remote object.
Am I moving the right direction with WCF?
Also I see tons of examples for WCF in C#, are there any good practical use examples in VB that might be along the lines of what I'm trying to do?

I don't know if I explained this in my title, this is what i want to do. (In VB on a active server page) I have 5 buttons called but1.....but2. Right now I have the following code to make them invisible
but1.Visible=false;
but2.Visible=false;
but3.Visible=false;
but4.Visible=false;
but5.Visible=false,
Is there a way to access the objects by using a string, example
for(i=i;i<6;i++
items("but"+str(i)).visible=false

OK - for starters - I'm not even sure that the title of this thread accurately describes what I want to do - but I had trouble verbalizing it. So I will give this a try: In my application, I have a custom object, call it myObject. In addition, I have another custom object called myObjectList which is basically a List(Of myObject).
Up until this point, all of the functions that I have been working with in my BLL and DAL have been shared - I haven't needed a specific instance of my object thus far. I currently need to write a function that finds a particular myObject within myObjectList and returns to me myObject. I know that the List(Of T) has a find method, but from what I have read so far - I don't think it is what I want (doesn't it return true or false? -and also, do I need an existing object to pass to it to see if it is in the list?)

I have a group of objects stored in an arraylist. These custom type objects have a number of properties from their underlying class . I want to use one of the properties to sort the array. I cannot determine which Array.Sort method to use.
I want to sort based on an integer property. Virtually every example I can find involves sorting strings.
So, assume the Objects have the following properties.
Obj.name as string
Obj.ID as integer
Obj.Alive as boolean
The objects are kept in an arraylist called FriendsOfMine.
I want to be able to order the list by Obj.ID, both ascending and descending in value.
