I made this class:
Imports System.IO.Ports
Public Class Controller
Dim Serial As New SerialPort
Dim CurrentAzimuth As String
Dim CurrentElevation As String
Public Function Open(ByVal COMPORT As String)
[Code] .....
And I want to use it in a form. How do I call this class "controller" and then what code do I need to use it in a windows form?

I have put this code in the global form Inherits System.Windows.Forms.Form. And then in the form that will inherit this from the global Inherits MenuStrip. "MenuStrip" is what the global form is called. But keep getting this error: Error1Base class 'MenuStrip' specified for class 'Lesson2' cannot be different from the base class 'System.Windows.Forms.Form' of one of its other partial types.

I've been creating short test apps repeatedly to try to understand some of the concepts in VB.NET.For the most part it has been illuminating.I read Bucky's .NET knowlegebase tutorial on passing objects as parameters to newly created forms. He shows how to create a new class that inherits from the base form class and define a New() method with parameters Extending the concept I thought about doing the same thing with a form that was created at design-time (In this case Form2).

Hi
I've got a pretty general question about the best practice in passing an object reference to a Form in VB.NET. My form is a dialog and I've created an overload ShowDialog method, where I pass an Object into it ByRef.
The trouble is, I want to be able to refer to that Object throughout my dialog Class and not just in the ShowDialog method. For instance, some of my Events for controls on the form, need to reference that object.
I know I could create a local Private variable in the Class and assign it to the passed value, and then use that value. However I'm thinking this isn't very efficient because it would (I believe) create a new copy of the Object (which is a complex, large class in itself).

What is the best way to access a value of a control within a form outside of the form class. I have a lot of functions defined in a module, one of these functions requires a series of values from controls in my main form such as the FolderBrowserDialog.SelectedPath element. I understand that these cannot be accessed in the format form.FolderBrowserDialog1.SelectedPath and that they need to be accessed using a delegate. This is the part I am stuck with.

I am working on a program where I need to read files. I won't know how many buttons I need until run time. I can't figure out how to create a button class I can call at run time. Each button will represent a file. I want each button when clicked to open the correct file and place the data into a rich text box on the form. Also, I need buttons to appear tightly in a row or multiple rows.

a common VB.NET class should look like the following:
Public Class MyClassName
End Class
Besides, I have already seen, if I remember correctly, all of the import statements visible just like in C#:
Imports System
Imports System.Data
Imports System.Linq
Public Class MyClassName
End Class
How to make these default imports visible by default in VB.NET using Visual Studio 2008?Is there some setting or the like in the options I shall set?

Is there any way to make a class instance public? In my mainform I define an instance of a certain class and then later on in some other forms which appear I want to alter this class.I try and pass them through when creating new instances of these other forms and it tells me Error3<instance of the class I want> cannot expose type <the class> outside the project through class <the form I want to edit it with>Which I gather from documentation is about it defeating the purpose to have a private class suddenly be thrown aroudn.but then how do I make it public? I can't define it in the first place as public myXClass as XClass, it only accepts private.

I am a java developer that inherited a vb.net web application. This app relies on a VB class assembly that builds in to a dll. I have made some changes to this class assembly but I cant seem to get the vb.net app to pick up the changes. I thought that using regsvr32.exe or regasm.exe would do the trick but after reading a bit more they don't appear to do what I need.
When vb.net uses code such as this import where is it getting the reference to "MyClassName"?
<% Import namespace="MyClassName" %>
