How To Set Any Single Bit In A Short
Apr 28, 2011
In VB.NET: If varShort is a Short and varBit is a value from 0 to 15, how can I set the bit in varShort identified by varBit without disturbing any of the other bits in varShort? My problem, of course, is with the most significant bit, bit 15. Since varBit is determined at runtime

Say I have a code with 3 methods that do some pretty intensive work. Would executing these methods on 3 seperate threads be faster then executing them one after the other on a single core cpu? And what if it's a dual core or HT?

I am trying to make a list, separated by a comma, of entries from a single column in a SQL database. I have been spending the last several days searching for a way to do this, but every thing I found either didn't work, or wasn't exactly what I was looking for.
The query will pull all the email address that are not null. What I need to know is how to take the result of that query and make it look like this:
email0@address.com, email1@address.com, email2@address.com, etc, etc, ...
I feel like I should know this, but for the life of me, I can't remember nor can I find it in any of the textbooks I have.
I am using Visual Basic 2010 and SQL Server 2005. I also have access to Visual Basic 2005 if needed.

I use SqlParameters when executing database statements. I know that I can replace a single quote with two single quotes... but in the past SqlParameters took care of this for me. I have two projects.. in one, the SqlParameter does this and it handles single quotes fine, in another, it does not and I'm at a loss why (I even copied and pasted the code):

I am trying to update a row or a single cell in ms access through vb.net. But when i update the text box named NRIC, say for example i want to update "s4522147B" to "tr4521856C" and mean while leaving the other fields the same.
But the thing is when i make the changes in nric.text (textbox), the dataset actually updates the whole column in the table instead of the selected textbox.
Below is my code for the update part

I have the following code:
Private Sub myGrid_KeyDown(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.KeyEventArgs) Handles myGrid.KeyDown
If e.KeyCode = Keys.Divide AndAlso e.Control Then
[Code].....
This works (For "Ctrl"+"/"), but the problem is that this works for any key different than "-". If I specify that the Keycode is Keys.Subtract (To use "Ctrl"+"-") it is never caught!

I want to bitwise turn off the left most bit of a Short value (&H8000) and leave the other bits as they are.
Dim x = BitConverter.GetBytes(Short.MaxValue Or &H8000)
Dim z = BitConverter.ToInt16(x, 0)
Isn't there any shorter way with bitwise operators?
When I do
Dim a = Short.MaxValue Or &H8000
I get a compiler error, cuz it goes up, instead of negating it.

I have a date field in my Access database that I want to display in a textbox with a colored back color. This is VB.NET 2008. A datetimepicker has a format property (short) but the datetimepicker does not allow the color I want. No problem, it's just for display so I'll use a textbox. But the textbox shows the date and time. How can I get rid of the time in the textbox and just have the date? The field in the Access table is Date/Time with a format of Short. I think Access always stores the time.

We had a Nullable object must have a value error today on this line of code:list = From x In Me Where x.FooDate.HasValue AndAlso x.FooDate.Value.Date >= barDate
Funny thing is that I feel sure this used to work fine (and there has always been a sprinkling of null values in the underlying data). And logically it looks fine to me. The check for HasValue and the AndAlso look as if they're going to shield us from any Null danger.But it seems suddenly they're not. Am I missing something?OK, we can correct it to this, which eliminates the error:
list = From x In Me Where If(x.FooDate.HasValue, x.FooDate.Value.Date >= barDate,False)
But this looks to me less readable. In simplifying the above code to shorten the line I left out a crucial chunk of the code. The original problem should have read something like:
list = From x In Me Where x.FooDate.HasValue AndAlso x.FooDate.Value.Date >= fromDate And x.FooDate.Value.Date <= toDate
Because of the rules of shortcircuiting and operator precedence (as outlined in an answer to a long ago question of my own) I needed to add brackets round the second part of the instruction in order to stop LINQ evaluating the second x.FooDate.Value.Date:
list = From x In Me Where x.FooDate.HasValue AndAlso (x.FooDate.Value.Date >= fromDate and x.FooDate.Value.Date <= toDate) LINQ really does obey AndAlso and force me to look more closely at the original problem.

I'm building a new web app that has a requirement to generate an internal short URL to be used in the future for users to easily get back to a specific page which has a very long URL. My initial thoughts are to store a number in a database and output it in a HEXADECIMAL value to keep it shorter than an integer. TinyURL.com seems to use something other than HEXADECIMAL (multiple case letters mixed with numbers)
