When I try to build a project, vb hangs and displays this message in the notification area
Microsoft Visual Basic Express 2010 is Busy. I have to end up using Task Manager to end the process. I have been using VB Express for about a year and have never had this problem. i have tried to re-install VB 2010 express, no joy. I even built a Hello World app, still no joy. This is really stopping all my VB work.
I get the following error when trying to compile the simplest prpgram. Error 1 Class 'CLSID_CorSymWriter' could not be created: System Error &H80040154& After looking at other stuff on the net I removed VB 2010, VB 2008, any C or C++ runtimes and any .NET Framework programs I could find, and then re-installed VB 2010, but the problem still persists.

The VB2K8 Express IDE is hanging intermittantly when I click on the form's Design tab. The tab's work area goes blank and a wait cursor appears. I can't switch tabs or do anything else within the IDE at this point. I have to go to the Task Manager, end the VB taskk, and restart the IDE. VB is at SP 1 with .NET 3.5. I have no third party add-ins or controls except for the Visual Basic Power Packs which aren't being used. At this point it is annoying and I haven't lost anything yet but it is happening more frequently over time.

I am trying to make a user account SQL database work with Visual Basic 2008 Express for login purposes, i.e. usernames & passwords. Plan is to host this server so people can login to use the the application and verify they have a valid account. I would like to host all the account information in SQL due to the possiblity of hundreds of users at any given time. I also need the ability to add data to the database for users registering for the first time. The SQL server will need to be able to access the SQL Server databases remote via WAN.

Im developing several applications under Visual Studio, and now have a real nightmare in hands. When i start to debug, VS hangs completely. Windows allows me to start task admin, and close the "devenv" process.I have serious problems here. I need to deliver my projects before the deadline!
Win 7 Pro 32 bits, VS 2010 SP1, running on HP computer based on Intel i5, 4gb ram. everything works as intended, except VS. When debug crashes, the devenv process uses about 25% of CPU and 250~400Mb of ram.
I have a heavily timer tick driven application that seems to randomly just stop on vista/w7 while minimized, sometimes it goes on for hours sometimes just minutes but the end result is same just stops for no apparent reason, the moment i unminimize it it keeps going. This never happens on xp tho where it works perfectly so what might be the problem?
View 1 RepliesI am using VB Exopress 2008 and SQl Server Express 2008 in Windows Vista Home Premium. I have created a dataset after importing all tables and queries from MS Access to SQL Server. I have now added a view in SQL Server that I want to access and use in VB Express. However on clicking "Refresh" for the dataset the new view does not display in the available objects, only those I originally imported and opened with the original dataset. What, pleas am I doing wrong? How can I see this new View?
View 3 RepliesI have an app I'm developing using vb/vs2010. It's an x86 app running on a 64 bit machine. It hangs when I run it in the debugger or the debug exe. When I run the Release exe, it runs fine. System memory doesn't seem to be a problem. I show 1.8 gig free after I load the Release version. I show a similar number when the debug is hanging. Just to make it all really mystifying, the debug version works if I step through it a line at a time.
View 1 RepliesI've created a multithreaded application that copies data from one directory to another, and I'm having trouble getting it to work properly on clients' computers. All computers running the software have Windows 7 and the .NET Framework 4.0 Client Profile installed, which is what I've compiled the program for. I have two threads: one does the actual copying, and the other updates the UI on the program. Whenever I run the program on my computer, even if I'm copying 45 GB, for example, it runs fine. However, if I run it on another computer, it will sometimes freeze the entire computer, so then I have to manually shut the computer down in order to use it again. I have been trying to find out why this occurs, but I cannot. Does anyone think he/she can provide me with some ideas as to why this happens and how I can prevent it from occurring?

View 1 RepliesI tried to start using VB 2010 Express with a program I originally developed with VB 2005 Express that I moved to VB 2008 Express successfully a couple years ago. It uses a database file (*.mdf) that is on the computer ( not out on a server). When attempt to run the program in debug mode, I get the following error "An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:Documents and SettingsTomMy DocumentsQuizzing StuffQuestion Database 2010QuizQuest ionGameQuizQuestionGameinReleaseQuizQuestionDB.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share."
I first made a copy of the entire project folder that was working in VB 2008 Express and gave it a different name. In VB2010 I opened the project in the copied folder and it said it successfully converted the project. I am able to open the Data Source inthe Designer and see the database structure as I expect. I think the project is still using SQL Server 2005 Express (because it is what is checked in the list of prerequisites on the Publish tab).
Note, I have programmed off and on for many years, but fairly new to using databases and SQL Server.
I have a text file which contains large amount (around 44,948 rows/lines & 9 columns) of delimited text data in a text file which I want to populate onto a DataGridView table. I have a project written in Vb6, and I can't load it into the Visual Studio 2010-editor/compiler, because no wizard pops up. The idea then was to install Visual Studio 2008 and try to get to 2010 via that. But apparently the downloadlink for 2008 is not working. Does anybody have answers or ideas to my problems.

View 1 RepliesI am trying to re write a VB6 program using MS Access, many years ago, using VB 2010 express and SQL server 2008 R2 Express. I have a database with several tables, which I created using the designer. I am able to connect to the database and select data and display it in textboxes etc in vb code. What I have not been able to in code is to INSERT rows DELETE rows or UPDATE any data in the tables. I can do any of these operations using the Query Designer, but I want to do it in code. I can post some code if necessiary, but I thought it might just be some property that I had not set in the designer.

Is VB Express 2010 slower to compile and run that older versions of VB Express? I've installed it this weekend and it seems a little sluggish on my quad core computer with 1 gig of RAM. I have VB Express 2005 installed for my students at school and it seems to fly just fine. Those school computers are older P4s with 512k of RAM.
View 7 RepliesInitially my app worked with excel fine, now it causes my computer to reboot only after Excel has been opened (two or more times). I have opened and closed Excel files 20+ times without running thru either of my apps (they all uses identical code for excel) and it has never caused a reboot or a crash.
run either of my apps and have the app control excel has become a crap shoot, it will reboot my computer. Adding to that I then have to do a manual shutdown because the reboot process after is unstable. (System doesn't respond properly). My code in this app is small, should make for a good example. I can provide the entire project to anyone who would volunteer to test it. (First I need to know how to send the project).

This error first appear to occur randomly. Steps to recreate:Open Visual Studio and load a solution (some files automatically opened) - this is when the problem occurs Close all open files Restart visual studio and load solution (no issues)Open Exactly the same files again, restart visual studio and load solution so files open automatically (problem occurs!)
However, when trying to narrow it down to a single file (that is automatically opened when the solution is loaded), I couldn't reproduce the problem. Now with all the files open again the problem doesn't occur!!! So it looks like it is fixed - though this happened before and eventually the issue came back.
I think it is to do with one of the user controls with DevExpress controls on it - when the error occurs, the designer displays the error. Though I can't reproduce it at the moment to confirm that.
If I look at the IL that is created in Linqpad for the two following code snippets, I wonder what happens here.
In c#
int i = 42;
results in the following IL code
IL_0000: ret
whereas in VB
Dim i As Integer = 42
it is
IL_0000: ldc.i4.s 2A
IL_0002: stloc.0
Apparently, the c# compiler understands the the value is never used and thus simply returns nothing. In VB.NET the actual code is translated.Is that due to differences in compiler optimization or is there anything else at work?
Update: Just to clarify this - I just enter this one line into LinqPad and look at the IL it creates (most definitely by running the respective compiler). There is no program.

This is what i am confused about; does the compiler creates a new variable automatically when i use the if statement without strictly declared variable? What approach is better in sense of performance?
I have created a program using FaxServer and FaxDocument. I want to know if there is a way to determine programically if the modem is busy? Busy in terms of it could be sending/receiving a fax or another program is using it. I just need to know if its in use.

I figured I'd use the quit option to set the bool to false that the thread will see then do the proper closeout. However, it doesn't seem to work. After banging my head against the code, hehe, I realized that the thread is hung waiting for a client on the "AcceptTcpClient()" line.. so it's never getting a chance to evaluate SystemRunning.Is that an accurate assumption of the problem? If so, how does one deal with it?Also, I surmised that I probably should put my "end" statement at the end of the thread to be closed rather than my quit sub. I was afraid the marker boolean for the thread would get set and then the quit sub would immediately trigger "end" before the thread had a chance to close out. Is that also correct, or doesn't it matter?
How can I access data that WebBroswer1.navigate function is downloading from a website, while it is downloading it? If I access it once it has finished downloading it through the WebBrowser1_DocumentCompleted function, it only slows down my program, since it has to wait for the website to finish downloading to the control before I can access it.
View 2 RepliesI wrote a fax program that is using Microsoft FaxServer and FaxDocument on a windows 7 machine. I want to be able to check if the modem that the FaxServer is using is busy. I maybe busy for whatever reason (in use by another program, receiving or sending faxes, whatever). What currently happens, is if the modem is busy, the fax is sent to the Windows Queue and waits for the modem to get done. I don't want that to happen. So before sending I want to check if the modem is in use. I have a couple of things I have already done. But I am having issue tying them together.
I can get a list of ports for the computer and I can get the faxserver devices. But I would like to be able to do something like... take the faxserver device it is using(Com1, Com2, Com3...Whatever) and I want to check if it is free.
