If - Else Condition First Code Won't Execute - Add Some Codes Besides Readonly Being Set To True And False

Feb 10, 2011

I have a form called LogIn.vb which has no errors. After log-in, it opens the MainForm.vb which IsMDIContainer property is set to true. From the MainMenu, it opens a child form called Assure_Benefits.vb So far no problem up to this point. When Assure_Benefits.vb loads, it displays 2 DataGridViews with datasourses from my 2 tables in my database.

There is still no problem with the loading. Now, to show the difference between different user types, I only allow the admin to edit the DataGrid. SO I set the readonly property to true when UserType = "user".

I have no problem doing that. My problem is I want to add some codes besides the readonly being set to true and false but other codes are not executed and the program does not display any errors at all. i tried to add messageboxes on the if and else conditions to try if added codes will work but even the messagebox does not appear though the codes next to it are properly executed.

When my Assure_Benefits.vb loads I call for the subroutine below.

Private Sub SetControlProperties()
If LogIn.UserType = "admin" Then
MessageBox.Show("Yes") 'This line is not executed

[CODE]...

I can't seem to understand why the first code is not executed when the next codes works fine.

Use Yes And No Instead Of True And False?

Jul 15, 2010

I wanted to create my own type that acts like the Boolean type, except I wanted to use Yes and No instead of True and False.I kind of got close but it wasnt exactly what i was going for here's what i have:

[code]...

so i have to use an integer when i dim it like:dim b as MyBool = 1 then when you look at it in the watch window b = {Yes} so i could settle for that, but with a boolean you can do this:dim b as Boolean without setting it to anything it defaults to False mine however, is Nothing. 2 things: 1. How can i get mine to default to No 2. How can i make it work like this: dim b as MyBool = Yes instead of having to use the integer this is not a requirement for anything I just wanted to know how to do it

C# - Using Codesnippet Until Condition Is True?

Nov 1, 2009

I've got this function which converts wav files to mp3. I call this from my button_click handle. The thing is, when the conversion is started, the rest of the code in the button_click handler continue, while the conversion is happening in a different thread. Now, I need the rest of the code in the button_click handle so continue to try until a boolean is true, so that I know that the conversion is done before the rest of the code continues. I've tried using Do While but it didn't seem to do the trick. Perhaps it's just me though..

Atagridview.readonly = True Throws Nullreferenceexception?

Mar 30, 2009

I have a project that I am working on which requires my datagridview to have certain columns set as readonly according to the user authentication results. But, almost every time I set readonly = true I get a nullreference exception.I have added ALL the datagridview events trying to see where I can handle this problem. The only event it calls into after I say readonly = "true" is my cell validation event. And that event always passes fine. It is after I hit f11 to continue past the "End Sub" of my validate event that I return to the calling code and all of the sudden have an exception too.

I've looked around and can't figure out how to debug this one so I am asking for help here. I have seen other bugs about scrolling content in columns and turning off scrollbars to fix random datagridview bugs but I dont know about this one. I can't find the same problem anywhere else yet.

-my admin timer elapses and I call a timeout routine which sets the grids back to readonly = true. One of my grids (one bound by datatable/bindingsource) almost always throws a nullreference when I set the readonly = true.

-when authenticating my user if their credentials pass I want to set the whole grid to readonly = false, and then individually set two columns to readonly = true so they cannot be modified while the rest of the grid is editable. I throw my nullreference here after my first individual column call to readonly = true.

I'm using multiple grids on my project, but the timeout nullreference exception seems to be tied directly to only one of my grids. In particular, this problem grid has the least complicated queries and barely any cell validation. I dont understand how it could be the cause of so much frustration. However, it seems that when changing readonly property on individual columns that both my main grids for my project will exhibit the same behaviors with the nullreference exception.

It's important to note that usually I can just drag the debugger back into the failure statement and it will actually succeed.By figuring this out I was able to set a flag if I wasn't able to change the status of the grid and recall it. Usually that fixes most things, but when it comes to doing the individual columns I cannot code my project to try/catch/recurse for each individual column.

I've got source and a test DB available if needed.I am not sure what is relevant out of my project to post? But I can offer some compensation via Paypal if someone on this board actually helps me fix my problem in a way that I can understand and troubleshoot for future projects. This is the last bit of functionality for my requirements and I have about 48 hours to get it bug free and working as designed or I will have to revert to some older spaghetti code and do a lot of this over.

C# - SQL Column True Or False - Use A View?

Dec 4, 2010

Simple question, I have an application and dependant on whether you are in the administration system or on the public website I want to show different results. Example: in the database for a news story in the administration I may set the column value 'showonsite' to false. So I would like this to show in the administration panel only and not on the live site.

My question is, because I require the same information just with the only one column change, live site to only show true values and administration to show both. What is the most effective way of achieving this without copy paste of code?

Get True False Statements To Work?

Oct 10, 2009

I am trying to get true false statements to work. Each statement has its own msgbox and if true adds 1 to x. At the end i use a case function which will give the final number of x and give it a value in a textbox. What is happening instead is, if I click "no" on every Yes/No question, I get a 4. If I click "yes" on every Yes/No, I still get a 4. For car 3, 4, and 6 I want a "no" to be true. For 1,2,5,7 I want yes to be true.

HTML Code:
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnClick.Click
Dim x As Integer

Method Returning True Or False

Oct 15, 2011

I am new to programming.I am making a coin tossing program for class.It is telling me I need to create a separate method that doesn't take any arguments and only returns false for tails and true heads.Not sure if a function or a sub returns only that type of data. Also once the code is returned I can then add that to a CONST to keep a running total.If the method only returns true or false do I need to put the code in buttonclick sub to post the image of the coin in the picturebox using a if then statement? Would I also need to add the code for the print out of the statistics after the if then statement? Not asking for code just a step in the right direction.

Function Returns True But Then It Becomes False Upon Assignment

Dec 7, 2010

I call a function (SaveChanges) to access my business / data layer and save any changes to fields that are marked as an Add or Update and are marked to be processed. This function used to work fine up until 60+ minutes ago. What is happening is that suddenly the function is returning false. After debugging through the code, when it hits Return the local boolean is set as True but when it gets back to the calling method (and uses the return value) it is now False. As I said I went through line by line and debugged it, then I added a watch to it. The funny part is that there is one spot that sets the Boolean to false, and when I put a breakpoint on that spot it is never reached.

Here is the function:
Private Function SaveChanges() As Boolean
Dim blnSaved As Boolean = True
Dim saveableRows As List(Of DataRow) = (From d As DataRow In _listData.Tables(0).Rows _
Where Not d("Marking") = "Duplicate" _
And d("Process") = True _

Handling Integer Representation Of True And False

Aug 6, 2009

While testing some code i found something strange how vb.net (2005) is handling integer representation of true and false (or yes and no). Or at least i dont understand the reason for this.Im used to C or Java where 0 is false and everything else is true. To get to the point, here is the code: [code] And the out put is:X: 1 Y: 2x is truey is truex and y is false.If x and y or both individually true, why does it return false when you evaluate x And y.However, change the values of x and y to 4 and 5 you get this:X: 4 Y: 5x is truey is truex and y is trueJust another example, which seems to work how it should to me:X: 4 Y: 0x is truey is falsex and y is false.
