I want to track changes in an application. So I've made a copy of the main table in that application, and am accessing both tables in the application using two separate datasets.
My plan was to use the HasChanges method of the main DataSet to get changed rows and then insert those into the copy table. When I run the code I get an error:
A first chance exception of type 'System.InvalidCastException' occurred in MyApp.exe
Unable to cast object of type 'MainDataTable' to type 'MainAuditDataTable'.

This dataset underlies a form and conventional drag/drop controls are in place for data entry.when the event triggers and runs, I am running code in the form that checks the dataset.HasChanges property. It is showing False. But this is immediately after the ColumnChanging event has been triggered.Okay, I see by others posts and MSDN that .HasChanges will only be true after moving off the row with the changed column. I have also noted lots of discussion about the advanced binding property of DataSourceUpdate Mode, but that does not address this issue.I guess I can do this by checking the state of the row for the binding source. Just seems odd that the event behind the dataset can be triggered and that does not change the dataset.HasChanges property.

View 2 RepliesI am trying to import an XML file to an existing datatable created in Visual basic and saved as a dataset and as a mdf file. However I having problems writing code that will allow it to save and recognize what fields to go to from the corresponding xml file.
For instance I want all that start <Artist> to go in the artist field etc....
I have been asked to create import functionality in my application. I am getting an excel worksheet as input. The worksheet has column headers followed by data. The users want to simply select an xls file from their system, click upload and the tool deletes the table in the database and adds this new data.
I thought the best way would be too bring the data into a datatable object and do a foeach for every row in the datatable insert row by row into the db.
Anybody happen to have a semi-current link on how to do this? Don't imagine it is too tough but have never tried to before.

I need to be able Import and Export data from my database in the app im developing. I have been having trouble finding the proper way to do this. I have to assume some of the people using this wont have Office installed so this process has to be able to work on its own.
Im using Visual Basic Express with SQL server 2008. Using LINQ to SQL with a local database.
I have a problem with the function below. If anybody knows of a simpler way to accomplish the same results,The problem that I have with this function is that sometimes, not always, it keeps the Excel process running and when this happens I can run the function again until I kill the Excel process manually.
Another problem with this function is that it is slow if the Excel sheet contains a lot of data.
And also I can't get this function to read all the sheets in the Excel workbook and put the contents of each sheet in a separate data table in my dataset.

I have a Dataset Lets call it Dataset1. I have 1 table in this dataset created in designer called settings. I want to be able to declare the intial dataset in one form as a global variable and make a copy of it in another form. However I don't want to fill it until after I have made the copy except that it is not working.[code]The problem is the Dt returns the same amount of columns and the exact column names that I have in the settings datatable. When I do Dt.ReadXml("Myxmlfile") I don't get any rows populated yet the columns are in the xml file and in the dt copy of the datable.

View 7 RepliesI have a project which contains a large number of lookup tables, and I have all of these lookup tables represented in a single typed DataSet, which contains TableAdapters for each lookup. I've designed an editor for these lookup tables, which should allow editing of one of these at a time. My front-end is written in VB and WinForms, the back-end is a SOAP web service; I can successfully pass the changes to the DataSet back to the web service, but can't find a way to use a TableAdapter to update the single table that has been changed.
What I'm trying to do is instantiate the appropriate TableAdapter for the updated DataTable by sending the name of the table back to the web service along with the DataSet, then referring to the TableAdapter with a dynamic name. The normal way to instantiate a TableAdapter is this:

What I'd like to do is this, but of course it doesn't work:

I have software for STOCK and SALES that can give me an Excel price list, I wanna write a small web app that will enable users to check prices, I don't have any access to that software's database, so I wanna import that Excel data (one worksheet, 5 columns, almost 10000 rows) into an MS SQL database table, keep in mind that the price list will change few time a month so I need to re-import that price list once its been updated.
View 3 RepliesI have read and googled a ton of xml documentation but haven't quite gotten an answer to what Im trying to do. I am trying to create an XSD document that generates explicit type definitions for fields in the dataset. I am then trying to create a sample XML document that validates against the XSD document.
This works fine inside of visual studio because I can read in the schema and the document and it validates BUT, the xml document created has no real reference to the XSD via xlmns or other method. If I want to use this xml data in say MS Excel and I try to import it doesn't know where the XSD is to validate against so it assumes it based on the values. Is there a way in my code to add the xlmns to both the XSD and XML if that is what is needed to solve this? [Code]

How can I update local dataset with mysql database without making duplicates. Assuming I set some column in mysql as primary key, which has unique string.
adapter.fill will just add duplicates, but adapter.clear before that is not an option.
So I want to update if the key column is the same with mysql data and if there is option for ignore adding new row.
I have some concern about designing Datasets. I was told that it would be good to have a dataset for each table for maintenance purpose. Because frequent change in database tables is expected, having one dataset including every tables would be pain to make the corresponding change in the application.
Q. is it good approach to have a dataset for each table ( I would end up having 30~40 datasets for each db table using Stored procedure) ?
I have a separate project for commonly used datasets. each project include "dataset project" as a reference, and use it by including needed dataset into Forms, classes, etc.
Q. Does this approach makes the whole system to be slower? If I have a set of datasets as a separate project, it would be beneficial, since It will be easier to make a change (I only need to make modification in one place)
