Invalid Connection String When Modifying Tableadapter Connection?
Jan 19, 2011
I'm developing an app in vb.net (visual studio 2008). I have a Teradata back-end that will be supporting multiple users in a production environment. I need to use variables in the connection string as the user/pass will be changed every 3 months.
For the gist of the application:
In it's most basic form - I have a search form which works correctly - it pulls results into a listbox and the user then double clicks the list box which will then open a form that is bound via table adapter to the back-end table (Teradata). My connection string is fine everywhere in the application. My problem is using a modified connection string for the "fill" function of the table adapter once the form is opened.
I'm using the code below for the on-load event and keep getting an "invalid connection string" - again, the connection string works fine everywhere else in the app, and the variables etc... are working correctly.
Private Sub adaptertest_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
Dim DBConnStr As String = "Provider=TDOLEDB;Data Source=TDDEV;Persist Security
I've created two forms of which two separate datasets/tableadapters were created by adding a datasource and dragging and dropping the fields onto my form.I was testing the program using a db that was located on my local drive. Well after publishing the app to the users machines, I noticed that the binded information was still being pulled from my local machine and not the database that the user is working off of.I've set the connection modifier properties for both tableadapters to Public, and I have written the following attempting to change the connection strings:
Private Sub btnSaveSettings_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnSaveSettings.Click Dim pap As New frmPap My.Settings.dbLocation = txtSettings.Text
I'm trying to use variables in my connection string to a table adapter. The only clean cut method I've seen is the following, however, I'm getting "Invalid Connection string" upon run-time. I'm assuming maybe this can't be done?
Private Sub adaptertest_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load 'TODO: This line of code loads data into the 'BCPM_DDBODataSet.LTC_FBS' table. You can move, or remove it, as needed. LTC_FBSTableAdapter.Connection.ConnectionString = "Provider=TDOLEDB;Data Source=TDDEV;Persist Security Info=True;User ID={0};Password={1};Default Database=bcpm_ddbo;Session Mode=ANSI;" Me.LTC_FBSTableAdapter.Fill(Me.BCPM_DDBODataSet.LTC_FBS)
Before I explain, the connection string I am trying to use is copied directly from elsewhere in the application that has always worked and still does. Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0; Data Source=|DataDirectory|cdb.rmd; Persist Security Info=False;
My problem is that no matter if I go to "Server Explorer", "Data Sources", or any other option it will not let me add a datasource/database. Up to this point I have done everything at runtime but now due to reporting issues I need to create a dataset in design view.
This is what happens: I click "Add connection..." I choose "Microsoft Access Database File" (Which it is...) I click "Continue" Form shows up with a field for my connection string, which I insert (shown above). I click "Ok"
I get the following error: Format of the initialization string does not conform to specification starting at index 0. The "Test Connection" button is apparently useless as the connection passes even if the field is blank.
I have attempted reducing the connection string to only what is absolutely necessary. I have copied the string directly from connectionstrings.com replacing my filename. I have renamed the file to an .mdb extension. I have used the full path from C: all the way to the file.
How do I assign a My.Settings.Item connection string to cmd.Connection connection string value?
Dim cmd As New SqlCommand() cmd.Connection = My.Settings.Item("csStaffHoursWorked") cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure cmd.CommandText = "spSaveDeltekImport"
Dim dbconn As OleDbConnection Dim DBCommand As OleDbDataAdapter Dim DS As New DataSet dbconn = New OleDbConnection("Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=C:COLORsitedataCUFORHDR.dbf;Extended Properties=dBASE IV;")
[Code]...
I prefer SQL server but im afraid in this app I have no choice. I think the .DBF file is v III dBase according to a thrid party .dbf viewer. The code explodes on the DBCommand.Fill(DS) line, telling me I have provided and invalid file path. The path is good to go.
Should I be using a driver with a different provider? When I remove the Extended Properties parameter I get an error unrecognizable database format - hinting in this case the path is correct.
I got this Error Message while I try to preview the records in Dataset Designer:"The connection string could not be found or Data provider associated with the connection string could not be loaded"
I understand the possibilities for encrypting a connection string in .net v4. I have a win forms application that will be used by multiple people on different machines. I understand that I need to protect the connection string at time of the app being first run on the target machine. However I am concerned that for a period of time my connection string will be unencrypted. I am looking for advice in how to deploy my app with the connection string already encrypted or encrypted during installation. encrypting the connection string in a secure way?
I'm facing a problem after installation any software setup that has a database in access(mdb file) How to I transfer file path in our connection string.
I have a piece of code to debug. Because of unknown bugs it creates a dummy filename. I want to track all the pieces of code who fires that creates the dummy filename, so I can change the dummy file creation to a thrown exception. Since I the dummy filename is stored on a string, I plan to modify that string to contain an invalid NTFS filename, maybe containing invalid chars. Is there a reason to prefer some invalid chars over others? There are some predefined invalid NTFS filename destined to this purpose? (I may think of AUX , COM1 , LPT1 or PRN , but those names run the risk of start sending data to a port instead of throwing an exception).
I am trying to connect DSN from my VB 2008 project. When i try using myoledb.connectionstring="DSN=myDNSname" I get the following error message An OLEDB provider was not specified in the connectionstring.
I added an .xsd file to my project using the IDE After that, I right-clicked and chose Add->Query I chose a dummy connection and then >SQL statement->Update Then I changed the Query's modifier to public
Dim ta As New dsCC2000TableAdapters.UpdatesTableAdapter ta.UpdateQueryTest()
The problem is... I can't seem to modify the connnection object at runtime (by using ta.connection = XYZ) It doesn't show up on ta variable's intellisense!

Why doesn't an exception get thrown when this function is called when there is no ConnectionString set for the Connection? I just spent 15 minutes debugging and staring at it and finally figured out it needed the connection string. Shouldn't an exception get thrown?
Friend Function GetValues(ByVal TableName As String, ByVal FieldName As String) As DataTable Dim cn As New SqlConnection Dim cmd As New SqlCommand[code].....
I am trying to make an oledb connection to an Access database.
1. I added a component class. It said drag from the toolbox to add components.
2. I dragged over the Oledbconnection and OledbdataAdapter
3. I clicked on new connection string for the oldeb Connection and try to connect to the SHX.mdb datababase in the debug/ bin folder I don't have a username or password for the database and do not want to set one up.( is this possible in .net?)
4.As soon as I try to test the connection, I get the "invalid authorization specification" message. I can't get past this and do not really understand why I am getting this message.I have vb 2005 standard edition, not express edition. The exact same thing happens when I try to set up the data adapter to the shx.mdb database.
I am on XP2 and not logged in with a password or username. Could this be the issue or is there something else I am overlooking. Also, since I am coming from vb6 and ADO is there anyway to just write the code without having to use datasets, adapters and oledb connections to bound controls?
After running the following sub (VS debugger), I try to detach the database in SSMS, but it shows the connection open still and won't let me detach. If I close program in debugger, the database shows no connections. I check the dataadapter's connection in the finally block and is shows closed. What gives
Private Function ClientMasterDBFiles(ByVal MasterClientDBConnection As String, ByVal DBName As String) As DataTable
I have a simple scraper. It works on some websites, but on some there is this Error:

I am attempting to write a program that will disable the Local Area Connection while leaving the Wireless connection enabled. My company is using net-books in our stores to demo air-cards and we need to keep them off of the LAN. I'm new to VB and VB.net, and it's been a while since I did any type of programming. I've gathered some code that others have posted in forums and tutorials and I'm working through a tutorial book, but I finally believe that I am stuck.
i make a class and when i call on form then that error occurs "ExecuteNonQuery requires an open and available connection, the connection Current stat is close "
Class Code isImports System.Data.SqlClientImports System.DataImports System.StringPublic Class DatabaseKits Dim Cn As New SqlClient.SqlConnection Public Function BuildConnection() As Boolean Try Cn.ConnectionString = "Persist Security Info=False;Integrated Security=True;Trusted_Connection=Yes;database=BizAimsPro2008;server=Server-2k3s" BuildConnection =
I am connecting to a data stream that pushes data continuously and when I tried to set up a network stream I just could not connect and kept getting the 'not found' error. I used the httpwebrequest with webrequest.keepalive = true and started to consume the data by reading into a buffer and then appending to a stringbuilder. Once the stringbuilder reaches max size I flush it to a text file. The problem is that I get disconnected from the data stream because I am not reading the data fast enough. I need to keep the connection open and read the data while ensuring data gets stored in text files. If I use method "CONNECT" it does not connect to the stream.
While (True) webrequest = DirectCast(Net.WebRequest.Create(url), HttpWebRequest) webrequest.Credentials = New System.Net.NetworkCredential(username, password) webrequest.Method = "GET"
[code]....
should I increase the buffer size and if so what is the max? that would mean I can read more data at a time and keep up with incoming push. Disparate here.
ACtually also I noticed that it gets stuck on this line

I'm developing a device app in VB.net that will access a SQL Server database. I need to establish a connection when the app is launched, and keep the connection open until the app is closed. I've done the following:In the Master Module:
Public CNN As SqlConnection
In the Main menu form load:
CNN = New SqlConnection(sqlConnString) CNN.Open()
Then when I want to read from the database:
Dim sqlDR As SqlDataReader SQL = "SELECT Name FROM Table"
[code]....
When I run the same code without the global CNN, but rather dim the connection inside the Select function, all works well.
I'm trying to insert a new records into database, one of those records is a "datetime"...when I type a wrong date, and try to insert those values into database, i get an error (about wrong typed date etc.)...ok, that's fine, things need to work that way. But here comes the problem, I correct the date, and then try to insert values again...here I get an error from the post title. And this doesn't work until I close that form and run it again...here's part of my code:
Dim cvLicence As New SQL Try cvLicence.upis("INSERT INTO blabla (itsnotimportant) VALUES ('something')") MsgBox("everything's fine", MsgBoxStyle.Information)
When it comes to database connections what is the difference between closing a connection & disposing a connection? I'm hoping to gain a more technical understanding of what happens when each is called & the effect on the database.
