Is there a way to display the connection properties dialog for connection string browsing(for database) in run time?
As I want the user to be able to connect to various database using the GUI.
Is it possible to use a file browser to load a connection string when the start form is loaded?

How to change the database connection by using openfiledilog in windows forms? The application I need to do, need to connect to a database, each time with different path and different name to explore the opened database. All the databases to be accessed are having the same structure, but with different location (in the pc itself), different name, and with different data inside (but the database tables and relations are the same. I understand openfiledialog.filename contains the address for the clicked file, but failed to pass this information to update the Database conection with the new addrerss.

I understand the possibilities for encrypting a connection string in .net v4. I have a win forms application that will be used by multiple people on different machines. I understand that I need to protect the connection string at time of the app being first run on the target machine. However I am concerned that for a period of time my connection string will be unencrypted. I am looking for advice in how to deploy my app with the connection string already encrypted or encrypted during installation. encrypting the connection string in a secure way?

I'm developing an app in vb.net (visual studio 2008). I have a Teradata back-end that will be supporting multiple users in a production environment. I need to use variables in the connection string as the user/pass will be changed every 3 months.
For the gist of the application:
In it's most basic form - I have a search form which works correctly - it pulls results into a listbox and the user then double clicks the list box which will then open a form that is bound via table adapter to the back-end table (Teradata). My connection string is fine everywhere in the application. My problem is using a modified connection string for the "fill" function of the table adapter once the form is opened.
I'm using the code below for the on-load event and keep getting an "invalid connection string" - again, the connection string works fine everywhere else in the app, and the variables etc... are working correctly.

How do I display a messagebox on login failure.
I've added a database to my application with 2 fields:"ip" address and "started" that holds the number the application was started from that specific IP.I want to upload the database to my site hosted at google.sites. When the program is started it should make a connection with the following cases:
1-no connection with the database (possible no internet available) - it should display an error message
2-there is connection, the IP is not stored on the database, it addes the IP to the database and the field "started" with the value 1
3-there is connection, the IP is stored on the database, it increments the field "started" by 1
Why doesn't an exception get thrown when this function is called when there is no ConnectionString set for the Connection? I just spent 15 minutes debugging and staring at it and finally figured out it needed the connection string. Shouldn't an exception get thrown?

In the full version of the program I have two sets of connections one for when we are inside our vpn, which uses local ip addresses and DNS names; and the other which uses the external IP addresses and DNS names.This works quite well; if the user has stored credentials on their pc for the connection they connect straightaway; and if they don't the .rdp dialogue opens up with the server name/address filled in, ready for them to edit the rest of the required information.The problem for me is that this means I have to code 43 different Private Subs and then link the buttons; and I was hoping that instead of individually coding each connection, I could get the users to:Select by an option button whether the connection was internal or external

View 3 RepliesI just want to know what is your suggestion about storing database connection strings in .NET? I am using My.Setting usually, but now I am facing with versioning of my application. When I upgrade my application to higher version the value in My.Setting has been changed, it didn't remain as user has set before, but changed base on my machine's setting. eg. the value in My.Settings Version 1.0.0.0 (User's computer) is 'ABC' When I develop again some new feature on my machine and set its version to 1.0.0.2, of course the connection string in my computer's My.Setting file is different with User's computer's My.Setting. So when I copied my recent updated file to use's computer, then run the application, the application read the new My.Setting file from my computer but not from their computer. the value in My.Settings Version 1.0.0.2 (Developer's computer) is 'DEF' Therefore I have to reset and reset their connection strings onve I updated their application, that's too annoying?

I will be developing a program using visual studio 2008 with ms access 2007 as my database. What I only use is this type of connection string: "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=C:mydatabase.mdb;Jet OLEDB:System Database=system.mdw;" but i was asked if it is possible to put the database in sharepoint and I haven't even tried it before. The case is like this, the program that i will do would be installed on some computer units of different branches of the company then the database should be accessible through sharepoint so that every users can access the most updated database.

I'm trying to add a datagridview in vb.net, but it does not allow me to change the connection string or the database that should be imported to connect to it. The only thing that I'm seeing is the previous ms sql database that I connected with datagridview and everytime I click the new connection, the window closes and it leaves me with the datagridview with the previous connection that I have. And its not applicable because, now I want to connect it with mysql. Not ms sql. Its some sort of a cache like feature in vb.net, how do I get rid of it. so that I can add the new connection for mysql? Do I need to reinstall visual studio 2008?

For example, database A needs to be checked in every 5 mins and database B needs to be checked every 24 hours.
